It is crazy. The reigning Premiers have the luck of having priority access to the best player in the draft and then according to this article get to pick him at the huge discount of pick 5 even before the ridiculous 20% father-son discount is applied. They are practically getting him for free.

By comparison, if memory serves me correct, the last time we had priority access to a quality player, Adelaide came in much earlier than expected at pick 8 to force us into paying overs for TT who then went on to implode in his personal life to make us regret ever making that investment in him to really rub it in. North's bad luck knows no bounds.
Didn’t eagles who had Simmo in charge also for the first time, jump in and bid early on Luke McDonald too? We have truly been bent over in that respect.

All these posters explaining Brisbane might help us out in the third round is the reason we wouldn’t bid, I can’t cop that. I didn’t see any niceties during trade week, I didn’t see any club offer some Black Friday sales on their blue chip players, so why are we deciding to play nice guys now?

I can recall Greig being highly critical of Barassi around that time. Said that , with the teams he was given, we should have won at least 4 flags in the ‘70’s. He was probably right but Barassi was so revered for getting our first that it didn’t go down too well.
Barassi gave Greig a real tough time as he did with all his star players like Blight. They never did get on. Greig recalls the time "Ron said to me, 'If it wasn't for football you'd be nothing but a shit plumber',"

My all-time favourite player is the expected Guernsey presenter for us tonight.

Yes, I'm that old, I didn't get to see him often as living in Canberra, the North games were only televised 4 or 5 times a year, but he was great to watch. The guy could literally walk on water. :)

Interesting.

Watching Brisbane, Geelong, Hawthorn, Richmond since 2000, there's now a similar (ever so slight) disappointment about the 90s.

Our side left 1 if not 2 flags on the table when looking at at the quality of that side - which retooled in 1997 to possibly be even stronger and better balanced than it was for the '96 flag.

Ah well.

What there is no Santa since when and here i was hoping he had 6 and 11 in his Santa sack for us FOS his a pretty good 2nd option though.

He's extremely humble. Tends to prefer to stay out of the limelight.

A few tears ago he did some plumbing at my house with his son. Travesty that someone as decorated as him was still working into his 60s

The AFL should have a retirement fund for all those players from the 60 70 and 80s who basically played for nothing
