BOMBERS ACADEMY TALENT RISING

A CHANGE in Next Generation Academy rules appears the only way Essendon will get any priority access over Academy talent Isaac Kako, who is shaping as one of the best small forwards in the draft pool.

Kako, from the Calder Cannons, is tied to the Bombers' Next Generation Academy and spent time training at the club over summer.

Under current NGA rules, the Bombers could only match a bid after pick 40, with Kako looking a possible top-20 selection.

The AFL is considering changes to the NGA bidding process and whether clubs could be able to match selections earlier but would need to introduce any changes this year for the Bombers to have any hold over Kako.

The 18-year-old has been a regular goalkicker this season, kicking 14.21 from eight games in the Coates Talent League.

Kako will also be integral in Vic Metro's chances of recapturing the title at the Marsh Under-18 Championships, with their carnival beginning on Sunday at Ikon Park.

Vic Metro takes on the Allies at 10.05am AEST before Vic Country also plays its first game of the carnival matched up against South Australia in the under-18 double-header.

Likely top picks Josh Smillie, Luke Trainor, Levi Ashcroft, Jagga Smith, Christian Moraes, Murphy Reid and Tom Gross will spearhead Metro's push, while Sam Lalor, Harvey Langford and twin brothers Jack and Matt Whitlock will feature for Vic Country.

Potential very early pick Finn O'Sullivan will miss the start of Vic Country's carnival with a finger injury. – Callum Twomey

Would be such a AFL thing to do to change the rules to allow a big 4 club ability to match a bid on an academy player inside the top 20. The same year Essendon have one tipped to go inside the top 20…
Only to change it back when we do..

What's the range Zak Johnson could be drafted?

Idc about his position. Another med forward would disrupt a few fans, but this kid can play. Seems he's competitive, athletic, footy intelligent, great skills and is good in the contest. All those things lead me to believe he's versatile and could find a role in our side.

Probably around that 15-20 mark at this stage. Although if he continues his current form he could well and truly push higher. His best position is as a first receiver through the midfield.

Footballing wise he really doesn’t have many negative facets of his game, but he doesn’t really have any truly standout features. He has decent skills without being truly elite, has a bit of toe but doesn’t really have breakaway speed, he is strong but isn’t really a dominant contested player.

Because of that he is really hard to rank.

Explain to me, what's the point of spending money developing kids that if they're any good, every other club can draft them inside the top 40?
It’s a bloody stupid system, especially when there is no equality and there are rules for most but not for all.

It should be top 20 and for all clubs
Even just the first round. If there are three or four other Academy or F/S picks you might have a late first rounder from a trade and miss out on getting your first round pick cos its outside the top 20.

Is the Liam Baker situation similar to McKay in that Tigers could get pick 2 or 3 as band 1 compo if they let him walk?

If the new club pays Baker in the top 5% of players, then Richmond gets the pick after their first round pick. It's a little more challenging to secure that compensation now though because the calculation is based on the new AFLPA CBA, whereas McKay's deal had him paid with the new CBA, but the percentile comparison was against the previous CBA and 2023 contracts and player payments.
