It would not have happened anyway because if Freo traded with West Coast, Allan would still be on the board and they would have selected him. Stupid trade in my opinion as Freo weren’t getting him either way.

Good pick with Reid though.

I agree with you that the trade may have been a bit pointless, and it's all a bit of a moot point anyway, but there's no evidence that they would have picked Allan if available.

The Eagles always had a pick before them, so they may not have put any work into him as they (correctly) assumed that he would never get there. They likely did put the work into Berry and may have made up their mind that he was their guy. So if Freo traded up, they may have taken Allan, but they also could have taken Berry, who they were linked for.

Port just covered their bet. The Eagles obviously knew that Port wouldn't pick Allan, so it was no loss for the Eagles, and ultimately, not a huge loss for Port to guarantee the player they wanted.
