They wanted Berry IF Allan was not available. Bo Allan was who they really wanted with their pick. This source from today confirms that.

West Coast would not have traded with that intel in mind.

A couple of other draft experts saying the opposite.

Twomey for one

As that article says they would have traded up for him. Ahead of West Coast.

I agree with you that the trade may have been a bit pointless, and it's all a bit of a moot point anyway, but there's no evidence that they would have picked Allan if available.

The Eagles always had a pick before them, so they may not have put any work into him as they (correctly) assumed that he would never get there. They likely did put the work into Berry and may have made up their mind that he was their guy. So if Freo traded up, they may have taken Allan, but they also could have taken Berry, who they were linked for.

Port just covered their bet. The Eagles obviously knew that Port wouldn't pick Allan, so it was no loss for the Eagles, and ultimately, not a huge loss for Port to guarantee the player they wanted.

There is evidence of that actually. Source from today actually confirms that.

The Allan / Freo link is strong.

I have seen Twomey’s phantom drafts. Problem is that he would have been considered a lock for West Coast if available so probably ruled out Freo completely.

Both teams would have been very interested in him.
