IMO getting good young talent in improves our depth

Improved fitness and another year into Lord Moir Binns Ollie Cowan Wilson O’Keefe will add to our depth significantly

I was 50/50 on trading out 12 & 14 but if Smith works out anything like expected I couldn’t be happier
On more important matters Soapy, has the club approached you yet to present the #22 jumper to HOF?

Medium defender is his best position, I'm just saying he's in the same category as Kemp when it comes to the kind of opponents he can hold, that's who he is replacing in our defence.

I'd be playing him ahead of Young.

So he's a key defender or not?

I've been a fan of Young but he just can't quite make the jump from promising player to reliable first 22. I agree we'll most likely be trying to cover CHB with a spread of medium defenders ganging up on bigger opponents. Not a great way to start the season.

Training spot for Durdin worries me. Just indisputably terrible judgement from our list managers. He's been a total waste of time yet we still can't own up to it. He's slow, has mediocre skills and is always injured. What is the point of this? At least McMahon can stay on the park.

All valid points, but I know the club rate him, backed up by some information today, so if he stays healthy, think he stays

For me, if Phillips isn't an option, I'd take McMahon and Carroll

We have two list spots so are only allowed 4 train on players. So it's Durdin, Carroll, DGB and McMahon. I want Phillips too, so our choices for experienced back up KPD are extremely disappointing.

Durdin is the only chronically injured player we have left really, and it makes no sense at all for him to still be in the running. DGB was an obvious delisting at the Hawks, while Phillips was considered extremely unlucky.

Wouldn't be surprised one bit if the decision for DGB over Phillips was because DGB was a former pick #6 whereas Phillips was a SSP rookie...

One thing this video taught me is that it’s nice that rival clubs call each other ahead of time to let them know they will be bidding on a prospect of theirs.

Probably allows them a bit of additional time to make any necessary arrangements.

Noticed that too - and I don't think every club would be extended that courtesy. Pays to play nice.

So he's a key defender or not?

He can play key defense, but I wouldn't classify him as a key defender in the traditional sense.

Modern footy, particularly down back, is about versatility and team defense. Haynes is a bloke you probably want playing a bit loose, where he can drift in and intercept quite frequently. But if he needs to pick up a key forward at some point, he's strong enough, tall enough and cagey enough that he can probably halve a contest more often than not.

He's in a similar bracket to guys like Wilkie, Buckley, Henry, Battle, Sicily etc - who are all classed as Key Defenders on the AFL player listings, but are more tall general defenders who can play tall and medium/small as needed.

tall flanker, 3rd forward

190 but still growing. Looks very skinny with his height so probably wont be a power type forward.

Projecting 2-3rd round but it's a long way out.
Played forward in the futures game, but mostly has played behind the ball and even a little wing. Relatively complete utility by definition atm. A lot will depend on his physical growth from here. Could push key position height or stay as a third tall/ utility.

He looks a good prospect.

If you include Kennedy and Owies, then you have to add pick 38 to pick 3, I think.

Hard to value what we got for Owies and/or what he was worth. Personally I don't think we were getting anything better than a 3rd for him in a standalone trade.
Not sure why you would add 38 to pick 3, 38 was the pick we got for Kennedy, so I’m just spit balling that we could have traded so to have picks 12, 18, 28
Instead of 3 and 38.

Ok now I think I see what you mean by adding 38 to 3

Need to keep in mind some players come from the clouds in their final junior year. Looking back at some of the power rankings from the start of the year Lalor was a pick in the 30s. Oliver wasn't even on the radar.

.Would be great to get some luck given we don't have a first

I suspect you are right. Clubs are constantly trying to polish up a petrified turd, because someone else once thought there was gold in there.

If he comes, I hope he shows what he showed to get taken so high in the draft, and I'm sure I advocated for us to have a look, before I delved deeper.

I'd love to get a Marcus Adams type out of a state league. Someone who has done the hard yards, rather than someone who came in as a kid and failed to impact.

The question will be - did Hawthorn "Gibbons" him? Grainger-Barrass was drafted early because he racked up intercepts. Hawthorn didn't need him to play that role, so they tried bulking him up to play key defence without any luck, and then swung him forward as a hail Mary. We drafted Gibbons because he was dominating on-ball in the VFL, and proceeded to park him in a forward pocket for a few years before delisting him.

I'm open to Grainger-Barrass for us as long as the plan is to have him understudy Gov/Haynes as a third tall type. If we want a KPD, look elsewhere. Can always go both - DGB + a genuine KPD.

I think McMahon probably deserves that last spot though. There are so many unknowns. JSOS is going to train down back. Can he be a KPD? Can Kemp be the third tall forward? Will Lemmey be anything at all? Besides, unless we sign from outside our train on 4, it's Sam Durdin or bust. Maybe they've found a cure for his injuries and lack of mobility? Maybe they've instilled some awareness and aggression into Lewis Young, who would be perfect if so.

I think we need KPD depth, but not necessarily interceptor depth as I feel that role can be manufactured in house easier.

O'Farrell can step up in his second season if necessary, just like Josh Draper did for Freo, but realistically it's his 3rd year and beyond that matters.

I know it is a guess. But for some of those on here with a keen eye for the draft, what sort of range do you think Cooper Lord would have gone if he had have been in the 2024 draft pool?

Top 3 for sure ;)

Its hard to say because he didnt play that many vfl games before we drafted him and whilst showing some good traits he wasnt blowing the lights out. We must have seen something in him.

I would say late or rookie, if at all.

Lord last year played in the All Stars games vs Vic Country & Vic Metro as an overage player, also played in 2022 Sandringham Dragons premiership team…

Strengths were footyIQ, quick hands, accumulation, contested game, pressure, evasiveness and endurance…
Also an area is improving to strengthen his outside running game would make him a better rounded player…

It’s hard to say where he would have been drafted at, due to his circumstances being selected by us, I’d say without the exposure he had playing for us, possibly as a later round draft pick, or rookie..
