I don’t think he was rejected by 16 other clubs. He chose St Kilda. Probably because they have been trying to get him across for 3-4 years and he became available and they could not believe their luck. A 90+ game player from a side predominantly in the top half of the comp and top 4 in some of those years.

I don’t think Port necessarily let him go because of deficiencies but because he was a luxury in really the only two spots he can play HB/Wing and they needed list spots for the two rucks and key position players they chose to bring in.

I think he probably gets into the backline rotation with us as apposed to the wing/high half forward rotation. He may take Webster’s spot or allow Sinclair to play a bit more in the middle.

I still find the starting midfield group a bit unclear for round 1 ATM.

I just think he is a great bargain get for us as he’s a very good player at his best. Is he perfect no but a very good player with high IQ and skills which has been a pressing need for us. Were Wood and Stocker perfect no, but have been great pick ups and apparently 16 other clubs didn’t want them or did they just choose us over the others interested

Thanks. I hadn't seen that article. Watching him at training over the past 2 weeks he'll be right in the mix during the 24 season. If he's not getting a game then we're going well in the positions he'd be playing. A good pick up for us.

He was drafted as an outside player predominantly. That usually means that contested footy isn't as strong in the skill set. His running prowess is so good that playing wing seems like a natural fit.
Just watching the highlights of that 35 possession game, he clearly has the goods inside. Great clearances, solid inside work. Yes, on the basis of only those 6 minutes of footage, he'd be wasted if he spent a career on the wing. Just bc you're fast that doesn't make you an outside player.

Standard practice in Ballarat. Do you wear clothes in WA?

Some people aren’t great spellers. It’s no big deal. Sun will still come up tomorrow.
Good that you spelled “practice” correctly in that context.
100%

Think Wilson probably starts as part of the wing/high half forward rotation and then will turn into a genuine mid over time.

Must you always be like that Gorge? Cuts deep to people.
Contemplating changing the username to Gorgeous George actually. Will let you know how it goes, Flye.

Great points…I’ve seen Bonner play live for Port and must say I was surprised to see him get delisted at age 26 at the time.
Perhaps Miles Bergman took his spot but his kicking can potentially help the quality of our forward 50 entries, not only with precision but also penetration.
I’ve been to training every week this preseason and he’s been in the top echelon each week…looks super fit with a point to prove!
Definitely a first 22 player at our club.
Who will he likely replace Mike?

The Bergman Bonner comparison is an interesting one, and I agree they were fighting for the same spot.

One is a fierce competitor with poor disposal, and the other has silky smooth footskills and can kick 60m, with questions over their attack on the footy.

It's clear what Port are targeting. I actually think they will be our nemesis and their physical game has trumped our running game a few times last year.

I think you are being harsh suggesting it did him no favours. He did get a few minutes through the middle, but he had no training or preparation in there. If he can get going through the middle in the VFL, it might improve his attacking game when he does play back and give him more strings to his bow.
Trained in the mids last pre season as well.

Reality is Paton was overlooked in the draft as a midfielder, following year as an overager found his niche in defence…given his limitations, lock down defender definitely his go!

21. Same age Heath is now.

Heath will be fine and people on here underestimate how much time the vast majority of rucks need to even get their first game let alone perform.
Does anyone remember Richmond ruck prospect Samson Ryan's debut in 2021?

0 disp, 1 clanger (turnover), 1 hit out (1/8 ruck contests), 2 pressure acts, 1 smother, 1 free ag, 1 one percenter

He was 21 at the time and the Tigers rate him internally.

I can confidently say this at least... Big Max would have a better debut.

People get my name wrong regularly enough that it gives me the wobbling shites.

It's a hate crime

I think Ben has some qualities that really resonate with the boss. Paton is disciplined, hardworking, tough with a decent sized engine, and I’ll wager a small bet that Ross Lyon believes he can carve out a role for a player like that.

I still think he’s definitely lower down the rankings when it comes to selection and Bonner has probably moved in front of him now.

If either of Angus or Liam look like they’re coming on then surely Paton falls off the list.

He needs a decent year.

Out of contract at the end of the season and in the crosshairs.

Very limited and has fallen behind a few in the pecking order.

It's hard to cut 4 from the list this offseason without Pato included.
It just doesn't look good for him.

Doesn't matter if its a footy forum or an academic essay. There is nothing wrong with having some standards. It’s not that difficult to get the basics right.

As for names, that's even easier. We're all just helping each other to get the new ones right, because we look a bit ignorant when we cant even get our own players' names right. The question is why you have a problem with that.

Guys, guys, guys... Let's change the subject.

Here are my favourite Saints players ever

Stewart Lowe
Nathan Bourke
Austen Jones
Jack Stevens
Xavier Clark
Hunter Clarke
