Training 2024 Pre-Season

Another guy that has gone to a club that is loaded with his type of player and position , instead of money they should be looking at where they can get into a team and make a difference.
Then they can think about the coin and extend there football career.
Billings could easily disappear in a couple years like Dunstan did.
Really disappointing for a guy we gave every chance too.
He is most probably regretting moving there now.
I don't think he cares. He'll run out his contract, grab his money, and disappear into a middle management position, where he'll probably be as intolerable as this bloke.

Are we now in the St Kilda ‘bubble’? Not much in the way of training reports this week. Bit about who was there, but not much about what they were doing.

Has Ross got a gagging order on the Brain’s trust? Or are they looking out for spies from Kardinia Park?

It's basically been a very quiet week training wise Verdun66.

As far as I'm aware, the Brains Trust media unit hasn't issued a "stop order" on any training info.

Mind you.....I could be wrong...!!!

;)

There is a session on this morning starting.....about now.

I was late to the party last Thursday morning and they were off the track at 11.45am.

2 things:

Ben Paton is no longer wearing his arm sling.

If you haven't got Riley Bonner on your player watch list.....add him asap.

Just before most left the field.....he had a shot at goal.......on the boundary(they were all trying shots from here) just inside the 50........the ball sailed towards the big sticks and curled in at the last second........I was about to wave my 2 white flags....lol.

It was one of those "wow" moments"

He did the same thing next kick..............and again a few minutes later.

You rarely see a kick like that once.....it was a thing of beauty.

But 3 times in 5 minutes......breath taking....!!!!!!

After years, and years of, having way too many poor kicks in our best 22, it is a great feeling to now have assembled quite a number of beautiful kicks who can kick the ball both accurately, as well as with great range.

And with others like Arie Schoenmaker in the product line to push in down the track.

Plus apart from these exception kicks, there are also now more decent kickers.

This has to makea difference to our tea. Not just in more goals from such a kick, but more importantly in that in field lay we should be more efficient and effective.

Turnovers get punished these days, and with more good kickers in the team we should turn the ball over less. Plus long accurate passes creates the ability to move the ball, when is passed years we could not.
Dougall from full back kick-ins was a two trick pony. Both of them not effective. The long roost, but with no accuracy so that it was a luck dip who received it. Or the 15/20 m short pass toa team mate who is then just locked in, so we gain nothing. You can see why we are using Bonner for the kick-ins.

Thoughts on our ruck structure?

Marshall is one of our potential A grade players but I do not believe he should be our only ruck and putting Owens in there to pinch hit is not the answer.

Owns should be used elsewhere wasting his talents.

Do others think we should be having another ruck in our starting team? .....Concerned about the load on Marshall

Keeler is the answer to this issue. He has the Ruck/Forward talent to do a great job in the role. As for the current defender training he's getting, for those who can remember, it would seem to be similar to that given to Kosi and Rooey all those years ago. Each had a season in defence before successfully moving back into the forward line.

Always loved a field lay 😍

It's a matter of no choice at the moment. We can't carry TC for the sake of it so whatcha gonna do?
I agree Chito shouldn't be risked but once he lands it's an extra mid in the contest which l think is the logic behind it.

At some point I think we need to make the obvious move which is throwing Max in there when Roma is on the pine.

You don’t put your key forward focal point in the ruck for 6 minutes a quarter. You’re just robbing Peter to pay Paul.
Having Max do the F50 throw ins and balls ups at least will help Marshall play longer minutes as he will be able to get some air in and have a drink waiting for the clearance kick out of defense.
Agree with you, we dont want to see him in at centre bounces.

Not sure how many centre bounce ruck contests Owens/Sharman/Caminiti do a game but wouldnt be that many?

Having Cordy/Howard doing the D50 contests when the above are required to ruck would provide a little more cover as long as defensively we can cover their KPF's.

Max already does inside 50 ruck work, I think we could even extend that to halfway or anything outside the defensive 50 at times. Maybe not the full 6 minutes a quarter but for part of that, sure. He has very good hands at ground level for his height too.

If we can't win it out of the middle without Marshall what use is Max being forward anyway.

Max is 23 and has been playing long enough to not have to protect him as much anymore.

Members would probably go alright.

Is what I also said at the first mention of Keeler in defense, it's a teaching thing of leading patterns, ball in flight, seeing the ground in front of you where you don't control it to then anticipate and adapt. Keeler specifically is a ruck forward, always has been always will be, his scope is adding another King as he has that special sort of talent to him. He's just not consistent with it and his body is similar to Stanley's in that he has the shoulders and the height and all that, but there's no potato to that meat, no muscle definition, he will get bodied.

Kosi was genuinely number 1 for a reason (Rooey was priority picked) as he was essentially a Kouta, big bodied, mobile sort of tall that could play utility, then as it was with us back then, 2 years later injuries and consistent into that head clash in '06 and he was a FF ruck chop out stop gap player at the end. But at a great club, Kosi won that rising star as he could have beast moded the comp if fully healthy as we had an utterly brilliant team back then that got riddled with working out of the 1970's infrastructure and tech.

But us with Keeler and Ming in that F50 would be like us with Ming and Bing, you just don't stick one in D50 at this level with two blokes that maybe crack a ton each with a midfield that can deliver. Blokes that tall with that agility don't grow on trees.

don’t know about a gagging order but the boss certainly had his game face on at training this morning.
Must admit I was concerned seeing 5 players wearing the fluro cap!
Arie (hip), Windhager (hand), Heath (ribs), Stocker, Allison all no contact.
Good to see Sinclair, Jones, Hayes, Butler out there training after missing a lot of pre season training.
Mattaes didn’t train due to his hip issue & Webster ran laps.
The heat and wind made for some sloppy skills but those to impress were Windhager, Wilson, King, Hill, Nas, Bonner etc.
There’s training Tuesday and Thursday at 10.45 for those that can make it.

Thats not ideal with that many in fluro. Hoping Stocker is ok, will need him with Webster and Paton out for a while.
Windhager sounds like he should be good to go then.
