This is the most recent report on our board from board legend LittleFires, who has been filling us all in.

Plenty of match sim work this morning in what I assume is the final training session of the year. An early start today - I arrived at 9:00 and they had already started, looked to be warming up, and by 11:15 they had all gone inside.

For much of the session they split into three groups - two would often be doing some half field match sim type work, while the other ran along the boundary or practiced goal kicking.

In between this there were two 15-minute terms of full field match sim they played, with blue vs gold (but no clear best v rest type setup).

The second full-ground match sim finished up at 10:45, after which they did some running and then split into a bunch of small groups to work primarily on tackling and ground balls to finish.

In terms of who was or wasn’t there and which players didn’t train fully:
  • I counted 44 players total - Sheed and Jamieson were the only players I didn’t see, with Ruscoe and Gillbee out there again.
  • Ginbey I did see at stages throughout the morning, though he mostly just watched. At one stage he progressed to some light standing skills/touch work but that was the extent of it. He’s definitely had his training wound back in the last couple of weeks - hopefully it’s just a de-load period and he’s all good to go after Christmas
  • Archer Reid was an observer for the most part - did a bit of light kicking and handball work but nothing too strenuous - still sporting a knee brace.
  • Hewett trained for the first time in a couple of weeks, though he didn’t do a heap. Started off running along the boundary with Culley and looked to be moving okay, before moving to some kicking, then a bit of agility and work on the tackling bags. He was pretty much finished by 9:45, so not a huge day but it’s more than he’s done in a while.
  • Chesser and Jones trained away from the main group. They started off with some kicking, before moving onto some run throughs/sprints with Ryan, and then progressing to work on some ground balls. Later they did some marking work and running laps but they were all done around 10:40.
  • Ryan did about half of the session with the main group but sat out some of the full-ground match sim work and competitive drills.
  • Culley also mainly worked away from the main group today
  • Petch, Hough and Hall sat out a couple of drills but did the majority of the session.
  • Yeo and Bailey Williams sat out some of the running they did while split into their three groups, but otherwise trained fully.
  • Darling again wore a bright yellow hat during the competitive work indicating non-contact. Some of his opponents pushed it a bit with that rule but he at least didn’t get tackled.
  • Of the guys who were present, Ryan, Jones, Hewett, Chesser, Culley, Ginbey and Archer Reid were the ones who didn’t participate in the full-ground match sim.

In terms of the match sim work, some things that caught my eye:
  • Yeo, Harley Reid and Duggan played inside mid.
  • Brockman had stints in the midfield and had a nice centre clearance at one stage where he used his pace to blaze away from the stoppage.
  • Harley used his fend off a couple of times to relative success. At one stage he fended someone off, burst away out of defence and hit a really nice long-range kick - I was particularly impressed by his burst speed today. He was really impressive in the first term of match sim, a little quieter in the second.
  • Ryan with a few great acts of desperation - a smother and a couple of good chasing/tackling efforts.
  • Rawlinson kicked a nice goal in the first term of match sim where he sold some candy and drilled it from 40
  • Dewar produced a couple of really nice goal assists but also a couple of moments he would probably like to forget
  • Petch produced an outstanding run from defence in the second term of match sim where he linked up with Long, ran through the middle of the ground and kicked a goal from 40.
  • Waterman, Long and Luke Edwards were busy throughout.
  • It was blue vs gold during the full-ground match sim, with Allen the captain of one team and Duggan the captain of the other.
  • A moment which made me laugh - Long running down the wing and had Gaff screaming at him for the ball (in a worse position), and Longy ignored him and kicked the ball inside 50 himself. Was just like the time he ignored Sheed last year - gotta love it
  • Jack Williams scored 2 goals total, while Darling, Rawlinson, Long, Petch, Flynn and one other who I didn’t see all scored one

Some more general observations:
  • Gillbee is a very good runner - was at the front of the running groups all day.
  • He was joined by Duggan, Gaff and Cole who were the front runners, followed by Waterman, Cripps, Kelly and Luke Edwards.
  • The draftees split off towards the end to do some running of their own. From what I can see, Hall seems to have the strongest running capacity, followed by Rawlinson and then Harley. There was then a bit of a gap between Harley and Johnston, who was then followed by Livingstone.
  • Interesting to note that three of the players who were right among the best at training (mainly in terms of running) a few weeks ago - Ginbey, Jones and Chesser - have now had their training wound right back. They may all have picked up niggles, or it may just be load management. Will be an interesting watch when they come back next year.

ArdentEagle ...what's the anticipated role for Harley Reid this year ?
Still in the air TBH. Will know more after the break. He's actually trained across every line thus far. Mid/Forward - Mid/Back.
To hazard a guess, I'd say mainly forward with bursts in the middle at this stage. (The training section down back was interesting though)

Interesting to also note the Yeo, although being help back has been mainly with the mids again too.
Burgiel also a sleeper.

Flynn will be out main ruck with BW forward/2nd ruck. 70/30 split or similar I recon

Burgiel on the watchlist. Noticed him getting mentioned at half back.

Duggan the other Eagle that interests me. Will he play midfield all year? Should beat his price if he does and be at least a good D6 with DPP.

Few of the mid boys have been restricted a bit. I expect Duggo will split his time between mid and back but I think he'll be more back than mid overall.

He'll be used as a relief mature body when mid. May rotate with Yeoy.

And what about when Yeo gets injured in round 1? :moustache:

Any Crows fans have updates on Zac Taylor and Billy Dowling?

Liked both during their draft years. Midfield depth seemingly an issue at Adelaide so would hope Dowling gets a shot at some point.

Darcy, Fyfe and Taberner progressing well

Justin Longmuir has given an update on three of Fremantle's key players progressing through rehab
Hoping to return to full training by early February, ruckman Darcy continues to take consistent steps forward after ankle surgery saw his 2023 season restricted to 15 games.

Pre-Christmas saw Darcy sign a six-year contract extension – making him a Fremantle Docker for life, signing until 2030.

Longmuir said Darcy is tracking well, confident the side will have him at full fitness for round 1.

“(Darcy’s) going well. He’s taking steps forward,” Longmuir said.

“It’s probably been marginally slower than we would have liked, but he’s definitely going forward with his rehab.

“We’re fully confident he’s on the right path and I think early Feb he’ll join main training so we will build towards that.

Looking to get him into the upcoming match simulations, Longmuir said Fyfe will be taking one step at a time towards full fitness.

“(Fyfe’s) tracking really well. Whether he’s doing (match sim) on Saturday or Monday, we’ll wait and see. He hasn’t lost anything over Christmas and he’s raring to go,” Longmuir said.

“We’ve just got to get his body right at the moment to build for match sim and get the minutes into him.

“If he can hit round 1 really fit, we will work out a plan from there, but (it’s currently) one step at a time.”
Position-wise, Longmuir said Fyfe is working on upskilling in the midfield and will potentially look at a secondary role in the forward line.

“We really want to publicly let him go about his business, not put too much expectation on him and not say he’s locked down (anywhere) to play,” Longmuir said.

Thanks to ToastieBoy18 for this report from today

I managed to pop down an catch the first hour or so of training.

A heap of modified match sim which built from 3 mini games, into 2 mini games, into 3 teams (one team running, the other two playing), into two sides full oval.
  • Ginbey, Hewett and Culley all came out and went straight to the back oval to complete individual running and kicking programs. RG and JC did the warm up, EH didn't even manage that.
  • Flynn, Jameson, Maric all did the first 20-25 minutes with the main group, when it became competitive they headed to the back oval and completed more running.
  • Coby Burgiel has shaved his head. Took a while to notice who it actually was, but was impressed with his dash and skill off HB. Obvious plan to get the ball in his and JJ hands.
  • Hough playing deep back in match sim, mixing his time between Liam Ryan and Tyler Brockman.
  • Ryan completed the whole session (that i was there for) and look unhindered. His field kicking stood out.
  • Chesser played inside mid in match sim. Worked closely with Shuey at times. His aggression and willingness to take the game on was impressive.
  • Yeo played all the match sim as a mid which was a good sign
  • Jack Williams was matched up against Harry Edwards. Worked really hard up the ground. Was a good link up player.
  • Gaffy played entirely wing which was nice to see

Overall interesting sessiona nd good to see the boys live.
