Just when I thought I had gotten over gunners, you pull me right back in.
Just you wait til we our play our annual Jack Gunston match against Hawthorn in Round 13 this year ;)

I'm not looking forward to it actually. Hawks have always been our bogey team.

I won't be surprised one bit if Gunners turns on his "Tony Lockett for one day" powers to punish us.

I am really hoping that we play the Hawks in Round 11 this year because I have booked return flights to Melbourne for that game.

So what actually happened with Jack and why did he want to break his contract and return home to the Hawks after 12 months...has anyone got any real insight into the turnaround - a very strange scenario on so many levels.

I have no real insight but a few thoughts of mine are:
I don’t think he gelled particularly well with the group. I doubt he was disliked but he probably wasn’t respected by the group in the same way he was at the hawks. So a loss of standing/seniority within a club, new surroundings etc.
I think he realised he wasn’t up to the top level in a top team anymore. I don’t think he wants to stay in the 2nds. I’m sure there were talks after his injury at the end of the season about his place in the future. At Hawthorn he will likely be a 1st team player in a team with little experience that needs his insight and guidance.
He’s a smart guy, he knows his career will be over soon, if he is looking towards coaching being in Melbourne and even at the Hawks gives him more opportunities without having to uproot his life/family.
This is a long bow but maybe he he felt like he was letting his teammates down by what was essentially automatic selection. He’s won 3 premierships, perhaps he doesn’t want to be the reason some of his mates miss out on a premiership of their own. If the stories are true that he did say to Fages he shouldn’t be selected for the prelim/GF then it’s a possibility. I would prefer to watch my mates from the sidelines win without me and be happy for them. Especially if being in the team decreases their chances of getting a flag. I do believe that Clarko among others drilled the Hawthorn dynasty to put the team above themselves.

My bad, little error on my behalf as it is on that Sunday of Round 11 that Dalions correctly alluded to (not Round 13).

Anyways, hoping that everyone had a Merry Christmas and y’all have a blessed new year in 2024 also :christmastree::heart:

I think it's a lot simpler than many see....... He lost his Dad who he was very very close to, consequently lost his passion for the game a bit & thought a move up north could be good for him to wash away his sorrows. He did get some of his passion back while up here but the passion was to play with the Hawks again in Melbourne. He was very lucky to have the opportunity to get back to the Hawks thanks to ***'s and The Lions along with the Hawks wanting to have him back.
I wish him all the best in season 2024 except when we play them in Round 11.

So, he used us. I doubt there is an ex player I will miss less.

Bit harsh. I tend to think the better of people rather than the other way but look at it the way you chose.
He made no connection with the club or the fans so it’s hard to think anything other than, good riddance!

You can pretend this didn’t happen, but it did.

Do you know someone inside the club that told you he made no connection with the club or is that your assumption?

From the people I know inside the club, Jack was a good lad that had some grieving issues that he was dealing with buit aside from that, he was a welcomed addition to the list.

Speaking as a supporter, I met Jack a few times and again found him to be a good lad and pleasurable to chat with.

Never cared for mercenary type players that only move to clubs to get a flag without doing the hard year with the club in the first yet. Worst yet that Gunston still has 3 flags to his name and still wanting to be a pig and get another.

It was clear that his heart was never in it.
You don’t need to be too closely connected to the club to see that.
