Just a really bad loss, to top off a terrible month of football.

Dimma Hardwick termed July as 'big boy month'. It's cold & wet on the track, fatigue is kicking in, along with injuries, finals are in sight, teams have started to work you out and come after you hard. The big teams stand up, slog it out and get it done, and coast into August & September getting ready for finals.

We've failed big boy month abysmally. Didn't handle the expectation, didn't handle the oppositions pressure nor the 'unfair' fixturing or standard injuries.

I saw Richmond of 17-20, Hawthorn 13-15, Geelong over the years & the other top clubs power through these situations and get it done, we are just so far from that it's not funny.

Really, really disappointed. We have 5-6 generational club players for us right now and we're middle of the road. Can't help but think we're going to waste this list and before we know it, we will blink and we will miss our shot.

I don't know what the answer is, I can't single out any individual player for this. The collective group just seem to not be able to handle the pressure of expectation in elite team sport, and I'm not sure that can be fixed.
We are only good at hunting, we do not like being the hunted, and just cannot put teams away when we have the chance.

Yep - as I said, just cannot handle expectation.

Only reason we went on a run last year is because nobody expected us to, right up until the PF. You could even argue that after Q1 of the PF the 'expectation' arrived and we went to water.

Mentally fragile group and age is no longer an excuse, they might just not have 'it'.

Lots of realisation that Voss and his coaching group lack a system.

Very talent based methodology.

Whilst the excitement of the run, finals wins of 2023 was great for all long suffering carlton people...

Is it possible we got well ahead of ourselves in assessing the 2023 season?
I mean we were woeful for 50% of it, injury prone, and easily beaten.

We seemed to only assess the good, not the bad. Then rewarded Voss, injury prone players like Cunningham and marchbank with contract extensions!? Rather than maintain that ruthlessness and keep everybody hungry to succeed.

Even the President patted himself on the back, to seek out an extension.

For it permeates into the way we set up for 2024... all the way through to what we drafted and did at trade week... to elevate us from 5th to top 4 and genuine flag threat

Why? He has had his 8plus years on the list.

Classic case of list clogger. Most other professional clubs would have made the call on him years ago.

Collingwood did it with Freeman for example, cut their loses and let him be someones elses problem.

We carry way too many of these "potential" outweighing actual output types.

Availability is the best ability.

List clogger????

Have you seen our 2’s play??? There’s not a queue of ready made or potential AFL players running around in the 2’s…

Yes he got injured again but he is still in our best 18…

There is too much sentiment on this board and in the coaches box right at this moment.

Don’t worry about who is clogging our list, worry about who is clogging our best 22…

Carroll had 9 disposals and 1 clearance in 3 quarters. He wasn't close to serviceable. Hewett 23 disposals, 5 clearances and 8 tackles was pretty good.
Don’t agree and don’t like the pot shots at Carroll TBH (not singling you out here). He’s a young pup who’s played a handful of games, usually being subbed in. There are a LOT of players on our list that were sub par and deserve the target on their back more. Newman, Cerra, Cotters, Motlop, Owies, Boyd (before being dropped), Young (was ‘ok’ last night).

No he’s not in our best 22. He has the skills, but not the drive. He’s had a lot of injuries yes, but he’s never come back into the side with any hunger like Docherty who made a difference 1st game back. He’s had more than enough chances.

Jury is still out on wether Carroll is AFL standard, the rest of players named are…

He is not in our best 18, never was and never will be

Complete waste of a list spot, been proven time and time again.

So I am not allowed to have a little compassion for Cunners because over his eight years at our club he deliberately went out of his way to get injured. What absolute tripe, no player wants to get injured.

Davey fulfilled his lifetime ambition, to play for our great club (well maybe). Club was aware of what he could do when he had his body right. Evidence being that game against the injectors a few year's ago. From memory about 27 possies and a couple of goals, was best on.

Had he been a more average role-player type, he may have only lasted half as long on our list.

Always disappointing to see a kid come in and show glimpses, but never really get it all together because of injury.

He will be delisted at the end of the year, I would think now for certain. All the best to you Davey, for whatever you go onto doing in life.

I heard Bucks the other day say that we have a star studded list but no cohesion, meaning the grafters/hard heads/enforcers/ battering rams are just not on the side (or on the list). We are to ‘nice’ to look at and easy to get at.

Give away a few frees against the pies but make the ****ing hurt…

I think this is a knee-jerk reaction. A few more losses and maybe some of this is true. Maybe.
Right now, we're 4-3 since the midway point of the season. Whilst not great, it also still renains a positive ledger.
The next four weeks will put everything in to context. Reserve your judgement until then.

Cuningham is not in our best 18 mate. The myth of Cuningham is one of the wilder experiences I've seen as a footy fan - from both fans and club.

Drafted in 2016, averages 6 games a year and never averaged more than 16 disposals in any of his seasons (averages 12, disposals for his career - 12!) - he was drafted as an attacking midfielder, those are really poor numbers. There's been nothing to suggest he's in our best 18 this deep into our list build.

Clubs persist with flashy but injury prone players for 3, maybe 4, absolutely max 5 years. We've persisted for 8 years.. 58 games in 8 years! I'll go out on a limb and say he's gone off injured in at least 10 of those games too.

I don't blame him at all, it's just amateurish from the club and the reason our VFL & overall youth is in dire straits is because we continue to give list spots to guys like him, Marchbank & Martin.

Just watched the replay. Gee, we fell away badly. Looked very tired

Can't question effort of Cripps Walsh Weitering and Charlie. They gave their all

Walsh Cerra Saad look like they are suffering after injury. Not the same players

Our defence is awful. Undersized and no run. If Weitering wasn't there it could have got ugly.

Pittonet is frustrating. Very inconsistent.Early in year he played some great football. We needed him to be physcial last night and he didn't step up. Poor

Ollie tries but need strength. Cottrell is a dumb footballer and a seagull. 10 posessions including 4 in first 10 minutes. Had 6 possession in 3 and 1/2 quarters. He hangs out wide and has numerous chances to impact contests and doesn't. Purely a role player at best

Cuningham playing was a joke. Elijah looks great but needs another pre season to be a 4 qtr midfielder. Motlop showed signs but like others is suffering because of injury

We are killing Kemp in defence. It's NOT his go and he is losing his natural flair. Cowan I like but like Kemp is having to play tall and not playing with usual flair

I thought our forward actually worked well when we delievered it to advantage. Charlie was excellent. Kennedy gave everything

Our midfield is a massive concenr. Cripps is giving his all but has no support. Hewett was solid but Walsh is trying to much and Kenedy staying forward and Cerra HB defies logic. I can't believe how bad our contested/clearance work has fallen away

We need to win 3 of our next 4 to ensure top 4. There is no more room for mistakes.

No not really and what’s disappointing the language from him over the last month has been underwhelming.

When does a coach ever say anything worthwhile in a presser? They're the biggest waste of time.

They're not allowed to say anything, what they do say sounds good after a win, sounds bad after a loss. AFL is the most boring sport in the world when it comes to coaches and players in the media.

He’s already won footy lotto being in the system for as long as he has showing very little.

No need to feel sorry for him

Don't tell me who to feel sorry for and who not to. It's not all about the dollars you know, how many billionaires are their that are feeling empty and disillusioned, I would say plenty.

How many don't have that much in worldly possessions and yet are the happiest people on the planet.

I don't begrudge Davey at all, but that is just me. I can see why the club persevered, he is a gun, just been crippled with injuries.

Still annoyed and disappointed….weekend ruined

One thing I still done understand is the reluctance to mix the midfield up

Cripps being heavily tagged…..they swing Rat forward because we don’t have a third tall. Send Cripps to CHF for 6-7 mins and try and get a mismatch…throw Kennedy into the middle.

You send Young back but leave Kemp benched for a good chunk on the last….chuck him forward and plonk him on Zerk-Thatcher who had a shaky a first half playing on an opponent

Good suggestions....

Once again our coaches seem to have no clue when we are challenged. If we are good enough to beat a team we do but if we struggle the coaches don't seem to be able to make changes to win us a match.

TBH I don’t think AFL is his priority in life. Has never shown any real hunger or desire to succeed. I think he’ll move on pretty quickly.
Seems a tad harsh. So the fact is according to you that because he never really got going and regularly got injured. This means that he lacked desire and hunger, nah I don't see it that way.

Marchbank, Cuningham, Young , Martin although a good player no point keeping him plays for 2 weeks injured for the rest of the year, a few others need to not be on our list. Can't carry these types of players play one game get injured for 6 weeks. Still have hope we can finish second but for that to happen everything has to go our way, we are done not going to make the top 4.

I am going to try and not dwell on this game.

I just hope that the training block rumours are true, and that this last 4 weeks of performances wasn't just our intensity dropping off a cliff
