Just read the article and no stats were really offered up beyond the comparison of Hewett vs his opponents, which is valid.

I'm interested to know what stat Boyd is #7 for, because it's not anything related to disposal efficiency or chains of possession, both areas where McGovern is currently our best player and in the top 10 for general/small defenders in the league.

In fact, McGovern top 20 for score launches, a stat that rucks and stoppage mids typically dominate (including TDK, who is equal 7th with 4 other rucks and Luke Ryan).
Gov has been great, but interested to know where you saw he was top 10 for general defenders

As for Boyd, he is top 8 in the league for defensive half pressure of all general defenders, Newman is 6th, Gov 143rd

Apart from Durdin, who has averaged 1 kick a game, Boyd is 2nd behind Gov for efficiency by foot

Boyd, Gov, Weitering equal for lowest 1v 1 defensive losses at 25%

General defenders

In tackles, Newman 1st, Boyd 2nd
Spoils, Gov 1st, Boyd 2nd

When Walsh comes back I would play him wing. Perfect role for him with his running ability and workrate
It's a thought one, early in his career he was tracking as being an elite wingman before we switched him on the ball.

At one stage it looked straight forward, he changes for Carroll. But now it's not IMO because Carroll has been good enough in that role to potentially retain it.

You have Cottrell who's form is mediocre, good enough to hold a spot but not good enough to keep a form/high grade player out. Hollands on the wing is the same and Kennedy as a forward is the same.

So all of a sudden there are multiple players who could make way for Walsh. I think it will be out of Carroll, Kennedy, Cottrell or Hollands. Lets see who plays well over the next week or so.

Soapy V i love your content you put up here mate. Provide heaps of value, if I’m honest one of the first sources I come to for information on here!

I certainly wouldn’t let a couple of people wanting to start something for their egos sake stop you from discussing Carlton matters..

I think I speak for many others that your content is great, particularly when discussing Carlton and premierships 🤣😍😎

I'm moderately well aquainted with Soap here, have always and will always have time for his views. I'm trying to piece togethet a better understanding of whether the (paraphrased) "Cottrell hasn't been performing well, the coaches have discussed his lack of form, and if not for injuries he wouldn't be getting a game" is actually trustworthy mail or if it's gossip, chinese whispers, the opinion of a club contact, or simply the opinion of Soap himself. The range of comments made have left it somewhat unclear which it is, and that lack of clarity gives me cause to doubt the claims.

Soap and others are entitled to their opinions, and I know that any he holds will typically be considered and based on reasonable observations. But that doesn't mean we'll agree, or that he's right. And I reserve the right to tug that thread for the sake of my own curiosity if nothing else.

Can tell you on this front that I sought info from my contacts.

* Club "satisfied" with Cottrell's sacrificing role last week. Did the team things and what was asked of him.

* It hasn't been decided which player(s) will lose their spot when Walsh comes back into the team "it's an issue we will solve when we get there ... Too many variables to play out between now and then. Injuries, form, etc can change things significantly."

* Club would like more than one current midfielder to pick up on their early season forn. Nothing unusual for those who have watched all our games so far. Might be a case where someone gets put into the VFL to tick some boxes before earning a recall

* Club doesn't have a set "best 22." We have about 33 players on the list (including those injured) that the club is extremely confident in contributing to the 23 when called upon.

* Unlike the past, players not selected week to week shouldn't be demotivated that they're not in consideration. Horses for courses, others in form, etc. "It will take the entire list to get us where we want to be this year. Every player is abundantly clear on this. Last year was proof that when your number is called that it's your chance to stand up."

* Load management is something that the club is focusing on this year moreso than in the past. Given our early injuries it's about load distribution.

Freo have in two of the three games they’ve played allowed their opposition to kick off to a lead early, with Brisbane 13 up at the first break and Nth up by 12 points at the first break and 17 at the half. The Nth one is noteworthy because they had two 4 goal terms before Freo blitzed them in the third quarter, kicking 7 goals to 1. They had a 5 goal to zip term against Brisbane in the second, you’ll start to recognise a trend which also bears out in their game against Adelaide: Freo are a bit of a surge side. They’ll come at you for one term and try and hold you for the rest.

I don’t know if that’ll work against us. Firstly, our burst is better than theirs is – against Brisbane, we kicked 8 on the trot – and our mids should ensure first use. We have better key and intercept defenders, and I do not think they’ll be able to trap us in back half the way they have other sides.

There’s also the fact that this game Is played at a neutral venue. Freo have played at the Adelaide oval twice in two years, with a 50% strike rate; we’ve also played there twice, but have lost both times by an average margin of 37.5, so it’s rather likely that they play the ground better than we do. Fremantle’s form this year has arguably been superior to ours, and their stifling of Adelaide’s offense is something they’d consider to have been good preparation to try and do the same to us.

Their problem is, if they start slowly as the did in rounds 1 and 2, will they be close enough to pull us back?

Because we know that they could be all over us and we’re still within range. We pulled Brisbane in from 43 points up. We refused to go away against Richmond. We demolished Nth – the team they only managed to just get over – to the tune of ten goals without really getting out of second gear.

This’ll be an excellent test for us, and an opportunity to show the comp truly what we can do.

Carlton by six goals.

Thought they started poorly against the Crows as well but the Crows are so out of form that they had no idea how to put their advantage on the scoreboard.

Think this week will be the rest of how much fitter we are than in the past. Freo have a tendency to overuse the ball when they're not on the run which inevitably goes some way to tiring out the opposition. I find this to be the leading cause of why they're able to go on these runs.

If we're truly as fit as what we believe we are then it should go someway from prohibiting them from taking advantage like they have to date.

Still don't get it?
When you haven't won a cup (or been to a granny)for 30 years, it starts not to matter what happened in the olden days...
And then when the johnncomelatelies start looking like they're going get there before you...
Then...it really doesn't matter does it?
Poignant I call it.
I get the spirit of this post, but we did make GF in 1999.

For such a power club our last 30 years are underwhelming, but Pies had a 32 yr gap and Tigs 37 year gap, b/w flag victories. Now they’re right back on track, I’d expect Blues on this trajectory too.

Best you win one before lecturing us.

20 years.

GF wins in 1990 and 2010.

This actually shapes up to be a real test as Freo are also in form and have started the season well.
I want to see us start the game better than what we have in our first 3 games. Freo have started matched poorly thus far and so of we can capitalise on this, we may be able to kick out to an early lead.
Pearce vs Curnow shapes up to be a good duel. Wouldn't surprise me if he is used more as a decoy this week to get Pearce away from the contest and then allow McKay to do his thing. Didn't think I'd be saying that 12 months ago.
If you look at who has scored goals against Freo thus far, a lot of it has been from midfielder pushing forward of the ball. So if we use our handballs forward of the contest, we can potentially get some goals from the likes of Cerra, Cripps, etc.

Think we win this one and stamp our authority on the league.

Blues by 27 points.

The time in the thread title seems to be wrong.
4:20 game according to the AFL, which would be 3:50 in Adelaide.
Excuse the big nose, getting intel 😁

Re the start time, us Dockers could do with a head start, we’ve blown every Q1 for like years… we do seem to get proper going somewhere after that… thank god!

Predicting an arm wrestle, we are one KPD light and our new kid Draper’s gonna be a player but against your pair on game #3 might be a stretch… literally, but will be good experience for him

Good luck guys and gals 👍🏻

Happier now that Cripps will probably be playing - Fremantle will have to spend some energy on him which will provide some opportunity for the others - Cerra due for a big game as are a few others. Williams is coming along nicely and should be in top form as match fitness improves. I feel the same might be said for Fantasia - would be a bonus if teh Club can get this bloke match fit for 4 quarters and keep him going - very classy forward with ball in hand. Durdin/Owies and Fogarty - I like that they would know that they need to keep the pressure up and hit the score board if they want to keep their places...

We need to bank this one and the Adelaide game next week before we hit the genuine 50/50 games coming one after the other...

I think that Pearce at 197cm almost has to play on Harry. Ryan might go to Charlie.

Will be interesting how they see it.

They will use Draper on Charlie and try to free up Ryan to intercept

I'd be playing through whoever Ryan goes to and drag him out or take him to the square

Didn’t realise we had such a crappy record at AO

You might be surprised to learn Carlton has never won a game at Adelaide Oval. The Blues are 0-7 at the venue and last year, to open Gather Round, were humiliated by the Crows. If Michael Voss' side is actually legit in 2024, it has to become an 'any time, any place' team
