Pearce is behind all four in his loss % by a fair margin. He's at 26.8%, which is hardly terrible, but not to Weitering (7.1%), Taylor (11.5%), May (12.5%) or Andrews (14.3%) level. He's ahead of Weitering offensively (more SI and SL) but behind the other three.

You can mount a case of having him ahead of Weitering, but the other three are ahead.
I’ll give you Sam Taylor.
But the other 3? Not buying it. May was absolutely monstered at the weekend for example. Andrews - yeah he’s been ok but he’s had bags kicked on him this year a couple of times.
Weitering has already missed about 4 games.

Pearce has comprehensively beaten every key forward he matched up on this year.
The only one the really got a hold of Freo, Jake waterman was on Luke Ryan for most of that game.

Stats don't tell the fully story with AFL.

For a start Lever normally plays on the best forwards. It's not suprise that May has slipped badly now Lever is out, meanwhile Alex has been carrying us to the second best defense in the league along side Draper...

I agree. But a lot of AA is based on stats. And one on one percentage is a big one for the selectors as far as the key defenders go.

Very hard team to predict this year so far. This is my team however:

Backline:

Luke Ryan Sam Taylor Lachie Whitfield

Jordan Clark Nick Blakey Max Holmes

Midfield:

Zach Merrett Patrick Cripps Errol Gulden

Forwards:

Isaac Heeney Charlie Curnow Christian Petracca

Kyle Langford Ben King Isak Rankine

Ruck/Rovers:

Max Gawn Marcus Bontempelli Nick Daicos

Interchange:

Dylan Moore Noah Anderson Caleb Serong Chad Warner

Not a bad effort.
I like the inclusion of Moore, though I think Whitfield is only just hanging onto his spot.

Agree on Whitfield been an average last month or so BUT he was that good in the early stage.

I stand to be corrected but I think Clark is the number 1 ranked defender in the aflca votes with 30
Top vote getter on the field the last two weeks, for a back flanker that’s a fair effort.
His averages are a lot healthier than Houston last year who was a starting defender
Holmes is ahead and has featured 9 times compared to 6 for Clark.

And yes he's been a rebounding half back flanker - with 4 rebound 50s a game. He has rotated more through midfield the last couple of weeks.

So are you suggesting that Freo has the entire back line of Ryan - Pearce - Clark.

As Freo chip it around the backline more than any other team, their numbers can be inflated.

Though they are having good seasons.

Think I remember a stat from CD that Ryan and Clark kick the ball to each other more than any other players in the league.

Don't really know what to do with a stat like that good or bad. but it backs up the theorys I here about them chipping it to each other.

Dont get me wrong, chipping it to each other has a purpose (usually to my AFL multi) but AA worthy is another discussion.

Like it makes sense,

Ryan intercept sends it to Clark to breakline and deliver.
Clark under pressure finds Ryan as an exit safe option.

Just interesting for the narrative.

Freo would need to come top 4. There’s so many of these types whether people believe it or not successful sides seem to get a few line ball decisions, Port came second or third last year in H/A. Clark is a chance so are a few of these running defenders

Another good team. Just don’t think Butters, Josh Daicos and Weiters have done enough to warrant a spot.

Weitering is the best FB defender this year 7% loss rate 1 on 1. It really should be him and Taylor as the two defenders. Daicos is close to the second best wingman unless you want to pick Merrett on the wing (that would be reasonable). Butters yeah agree if he gets in would be an iffy call

Daicos has been a bit down on last year's form, but as a wingman, I still think he deserves one of the two wing roles. His last month has been great.

Butters, I think, is a victim of his own high standards. We expect more than him from others because of how good he is. I still think he deserves a spot on form.

Weitering is the best key back in the comp and by a fair margin, in my opinion.

I’m championing for it but I’m not silly.
Freo had 1 AA In 2013 and 2 in 2015 when we were the best home and away team in the comp.

Blues got 3 in 5 in squad didn’t make finals
Freo In 2015 were the best home and away team got 2 in.
You just have to be not freo

Does he take the best forward though or just the one he can get loose on when required?

I know in the Freo game he played on a broken down tabs and completely smashed him. I'm curious if his contest numbers are similar to others or if he has less as he's sometimes got a different role than the best forward.
