You are such a negative Nelly. So keen to jump in you don't follow the discussion.

The original claim by old mate Scorpus was, and I quote "The big thing for me is I believe Gold Coast's midfield is comfortably better and more experienced than ours which will probably decide it".

He then compared Rowell/Anderson to Rachele/Soligo as to why they were more experienced. Its a silly comparison because judging on Nicks coaching history we are going to be lining up with Laird, Crouch, Dawson at that first centre bounce.

My only assertion is that our core midfield group of Dawson/Laird/Crouch is far more experienced than Gold Coasts Rowell, Anderson and Miller. Not once did I suggest that our midfield group was better.
I’d say Matt Crouch will start on the pine like he did last year

Laird Dawson and one of Rankine or Rachele likely at opening bounce

My thinking is that 2 inside midfield spots to be rotated between Dawson, Laird & Crouch.

The other to be a mixture of Rankine, Rachele & Pedlar.

Obviously depending on the game, we can look to mix things up.

Also, a bit of Soligo & Jones at times.

Not too many selection dilemmas ahead of round 1.

Prefer Butts over Keane for King, but only if Butts is fit.

Sholl comes in if either Soligo or Milera are not ready (Smith to play HBF rather than wing if Milera not ready).

B: Michalanney, Butts (Keane), Hinge
HB: Milera (Sholl), Worrell, Curtin
C: Soligo (Sholl), Dawson, Jones
HF: Pedlar, Walker, Keays
F: Rachele, Thilthorpe, Fogarty
R: O'Brien, Laird, Rankine
I: Nankervis, Crouch, Smith, Murphy
Sub: Cook
E: Berry, Burgess, Sholl

Close, but I reckon switch Berry and Nank. Depends on matchups, but Curtin would have to be a long shot to debut from here…Borlase/Keane would have to be more likely at this point.

Berry isn't suited as an outside player though.

Need to pick a balanced team.

Imo, we will fast track Curtin like we have with other early picks in the past few years.

I wonder how many will be allowed on the bench against Port next week? Surely both teams will have extended benches.
Isn't it usually around 26 players?

If it's hotter, should be expanded.

Its match sim so the teams decide the rules. LAST YEAR THEY PLAYED 6 PERIODS

From the AFL SITE

The first of 18 club v club hitouts ahead of the 2024 Toyota AFL premiership season will see Melbourne play Richmond at Casey Fields in a seven-period match simulation session on Sunday morning.

The 16 other clubs will take part in similar match simulations – where the length of quarters or periods and squad sizes can be determined by the teams involved – between Wednesday and Saturday.

Nailed it. Hopefully Curtin gets every chance to get the Rising Star playing there too

Im starting to think Curtin may miss round 1 unless theyre prepared to play him on a wing which it doesnt appear they are

Butts, Keane, Worrell all ahead? Can you play all 4? Maybe, maybe not

Id actually like to see curtin on a wing i think

MM is already quite a big 4th, even though he obviously moves well

Hinge, Milera and Smith are the 3 non talls locked in

I definitely would prefer Curtin on a wing over Jones. Not sure why they persist with Jones.

Soligo and Milera will play. Worrell isnt a key position defender. Thats similar to playing Doedee on key position talls which never worked. Nicks has always played 2 key talls and a interceptor such as Doedee or Worrell.

I'll go

FB: Worrell ~ Butts ~ Michalanney
HB: Milera ~ Keane ~ Hinge
C: Soligo ~ Dawson ~ Smith
R: OBrien ~ Laird ~ Crouch
HF: Rankine ~ Walker ~ Rachele
FF: Pedlar ~ Thilthorpe ~ Fogarty
B: Keays ~ Jones ~ Murphy ~ Sholl
S: McHenry

Not far away:
Curtin, Edwards, Nankervis, Berry, Dowling, Burgess

Bit further back:
Taylor, Hamill, Cook, Ryan, Parnell, Gollant

Sanfl only:
Strachan, Himmelberg, Borlase, Gallagher (for this year), Bond

Injured:
Schoenberg, Murray, Sloane

I'm very keen for Hinge to build on last year, and not be a one year wonder. He ismsptoved so much last season

I reckon he's massively overrated. He looks a viable AFL player with a sweet leg, but in our forum he's AA potential. We also overrated Seedsman, who was a great long kick to space, but was ordinary hitting up options.

Reckon this is pretty close to the mark, although I’m replacing Sholl with Burgess to give us an extra tall option on the bench.

Very close, the only question would be over the last spot.

Extra Runner = Sholl or Nank
Extra Mid = Berry
Extra Tall = Burgess or Curtin

I would go with Nank or Curtin.

The slippery and humid conditions on the Gold Coast should come into the decision as well.

If Lukosius is playing CHF, Worrell is a very good matchup.

We should be horses for course with our defence, depending on the opposition.

Sholl and McHenry always seem to find their way into the team and then get found out within 3 or 4 games. I dont see Sholl suddenly finding some toughness and McHenry suddenly kicking more than 30 metres. He couldn't make the distance down wind from 35 metres yesterday. Its probably a moot point anyway as Soligo and Milera will take their spot but i don't see any point going back to the well with Sholl and McHenry.

I'm going something like...

B: Michalanney, Butts/Keane, Hinge
HB: Milera, Worrell, Nankervis
C: Soligo, Dawson, Jones
HF: Pedlar, Walker, Keays
F: Rachele, Thilthorpe, Fogarty
R: O'Brien, Laird, Rankine
I: Curtin, Crouch, Smith, Murphy
Sub: McHenry

Sholl in for Soligo or Milera (with Smith back to defence) if unavailable.

Likely slippery conditions, so going for a more mobile defence.

Not sure yet who out of Butts & Keane will be more ready to take on King.
