Realistically, neither Cripps nor Daicos should have scored anywhere near that high. Take ten votes off each of them and it starts to look a little more sensible.

Daicos scored votes in even more matches than Cripps did. Eighteen matches he scored votes! He's a bloody good player, but come on.

As Cripps said

There’s one extra round so it’s a bit higher

Lol that Nick Daicos breaks the record for Brownlow votes within a season and doesn't win, and also has 2 out of 3 goal of the year nominations and gets pipped for that as well.
And his brother just got engaged first too!

Having said all that, these votes far better reflect the players and Cripps was right up there just behind Daicos at seasons end

LEADERBOARD

117 Nick Daicos (COLL)
113 Patrick Cripps (CARL)
112 Isaac Heeney (SYD)
100 Caleb Serong (FRE)
97 Lachie Neale (BRIS)
93 Marcus Bontempelli (WBD)
86 Errol Gulden (SYD)
80 Zach Merrett (ESS)
80 Chad Warner (SYD)
78 Zak Butters (PORT)

M.Voss : 5 votes, P. Cripps

I saw this posted on the main board. There is no question that the umpires got the two players mixed up.

Round 9 - Hawthorn vs Bulldogs
  • Amon - 15 disposals, 0 coaches votes, 2 Brownlow votes
  • Impey - 29 disposals, 9 coaches votes, 0 Brownlow votes
Similarly, N. Daicos getting votes in a 15 disposal game where he was subbed off as opposed to Josh who had 34 touches.

Do umpires have access to statistics after the game? This suggests they don’t, when they absolutely should

Mind you, in a lot of cases it would just increase confirmation bias

I think the purists already know in their heads that the coaches votes is probably the best indicator these days. After last night's count I wonder if it's sunk into a few hearts now too.

The beauty of letting the umps do it was the spread of the votes over the course of the season but if they are now voting based on reputation then their value is gone.

"On three occasions, Port Adelaide star Zak Butters got three Brownlow votes but was overlooked by the coaches in their votes."

Seriously, has the Brownlow lost so much credibility in a single count before?

Never seen such a lack of shame from the umpires
When we talk about how biased the competition is, one of the biggest factors is that ALL the umpires live in Melbourne. They read the Melbourne papers, they listen to the Melbourne radios, they watch the Melbourne based footy shows.
They are absolutely corrupted by their surroundings.
Never more evident that the Brownlow, where they start awarding votes on the back of the media attention certain players get. It's why players who have a breakthrough year get more votes the year after, once the media narrative has developed.

The Brownlow is a shit award. It's named after a Victorian administrator who has zero relevance to the National Competition. It's awarded by biased and corrupted umpires who have zero clues about who is best on ground and base their votes almost entirely on stats.

Those goal of the year nominations were pathetic. Bog average goals at best. The Higgins goal from outside the boundary was a LOT better.

Maybe they left it out because he was 3 metres OOB ??

Also they werent bog average goals, having the composure to run and bounce, then finish at full speed isnt that easy.
