Bullsh*t you can still develop players and still coach to win games... Sucess and winning games at VFL level is just as important for our player development and club as are AFL games. Its very short sighted or ignorant to think otherwise.

Calm down.

I agree success is important, I don't personally have a problem with the way he's coaching. You do, fair enough, you're entitled to that opinion.

That's the instruction from the boss.

If we can win the game, then that's great. But that doesn't come at the expense of players like Phillipou getting the required midfield minutes or someone returning from injury playing more than rehab staff determined pregame.

Waste of a pick and it was a 1st rounder.
Typical St.Kilda
Let's not forget that his 'first rounder' status was pick 26 in the covid draft where recruiters were mainly guessing and going off attributes due to games not being played. And there aren't many success stories to come from this draft overall so considering we got Crouch and Higgins in that off season, we didn't do too bad.

I think it's more that he's a bit stagnant and slow to react at stoppages. He's alright once he's going, not breaking any lines but alright. Honestly I feel like he's looked his best as a leading forward. Wouldn't mind them switching him and Owens around unless he can pull his finger out around stoppages.
Fair comment - I’m not sure what it is but he is slow - does he lack speed, agility or is his reaction time and reading of the game poor or a combination of all of the above? Whatever it is that should be his entire focus in the off season.

Right now he offers us nothing in the midfield - we are already full of one paced plodders who can get more of the ball than him but can’t keep up with the elite.

He is only 19 and dedicated so let’s hope he can turn it around for 2025.

Well I suspect he’ll be off the list, as should anyone be who won’t make it.

Anyone it was simply a joke given your previously expressed passion for the subject.

Happy to delete the post if it offends.
Nah it didn't offend, i was just after your view since you seemed to be defending him , yes i have had plenty of cracks at him and Byrnes as I don't believe either will make it.
We have seen a big enough sample size of what Byrnes brings and its not taking us anywhere , we are going to need to trim as much dead wood as possible and hit the draft hard before Tassie comes in.
There is no point keeping players like Byrnes for another couple of years hoping he comes good when we could be putting time into kids who may make it

Sorry its frustrating because he has made the exact same mistakes that Lyon makes. In previous games I have rated Batchelors coaching with the talent he had available. If Lyon is having a say then how many minutes players like Crouch and Phillipou get when they arent performing then the set up is totally wrong and Lyon is over reaching in his role. When Batchelor moved Jones and Byrnes (also AFL listed) into the middle it gave the team a entire new out look.

Garcia it seems was used as the behind the ruckman stopper/tackler similiarly to what Ross does when playing. Then with Crouch and Phillipou left as the ball winners Sandringham were way too slow and got cut up with ridiculous ease.

Maybe they are panic merchants, or maybe they have all the analysis in front of them to make decisions.

They were the ones that almost won it for Sandy out of the middle in the final ten minutes. Maybe professional football coaches actually do know what they are doing.

All good mate. We don't have to agree on everything and its good to hear opinions that are different to our own.

Personally I tend to be a little glass half full, and I give benefit of the doubt usually.

That has its pro's and cons, occasionally I don't want to accept bleeding obvious.

But I think some of the things you're talking about are a bit subjective and there could be good reasons for them.

I've wondered all year why we have not given Byrnes a bit more time around the ball, why Owens has only had limited time in the middle too etc. but I have it in the back of my head that the coaches are working very closely with the players and probably know better than me.

Imo it’s impossible to tell if he’s got the smarts yet because his body is so clearly letting him down. There were so many obvious times today where you could see what he wanted to do but he just didn’t have the physical capability. I expect it’ll be a couple more preseasons before he’s close to AFL fitness and that’s when we’ll start to see whether he’s got the other attributes to make it.

It worked out that most of the future picks we'd thrown in for Hill ( because first rounder and Acres was just not enough :/ ) were junk.

I also left a short way into the last. Gee, Campbell (as others have said) is dominant at VFL level. Heath seems to be on the bench a lot, unsure if injury/awareness or tank.

Bloke at GCS full back yelling "subah" or some shit, subah struggled I think.

I agree with some Phillipou comments, not all. To me it looks more like a positional identity crisis.

Went along today today to watch Sandy, but more as the wife's second cousin was playing for the Suns VFL team for the second time. He is only 16. Originally the Lions added him to there development squad when he was only 10. Gifted athlete as well as was in the top three in Qld in 100/200 m sprints in his age group.

He swapped to the Suns Academy latter and moved to the GC as a base.

We chatted with him after the game. He was disappointed that Arie was not playing as he had heard a lot about his kicking prowess and wanted to see it it first hand. He thought Garcia was very good. Asked me what had happened to Phillipou as he said he was very quiet vocally on the field and implied that he was not really achieving much. Commented that Crouch was good, and that the Suns players were stirring up Campbell for being such an old man ;)

He was really pleased to being playing VFL and commented that the standard was so much higher than in the U18s where he normally played. Also commented that his team mates the VFL were so much more team focussed whereas in the U18s many of the players are all trying to really stand out and so often tend to be hungry and are more individual play focussed rather than bein team first.

Another heroic effort from Sharman this week is great to see. Going about it very well.

Garcia also getting involved and hitting the scoreboard strongly is also a huge positive.
