Ollie Wines will undergo an off-season procedure to fix the heart palpitations that have forced the Port Adelaide midfielder to be substituted out of games.

The veteran has twice been subbed out of games – most recently in the round 10 win over Hawthorn – with an irregular heartbeat.

Wines confirmed he was “100 per cent fine” now, having played the following two games before the Power’s round 13 bye.

“It’s something that, fortunately, having spoken to a lot of experts and had a lot of appointments about it, is an isolated incident that does happen occasionally,” he said.

“Obviously the two times it has occurred has been in the middle of football games and it’s a little bit hard to hide away from that. (But) fortunately for me it’s not life-threatening, it’s just something that effects me playing at 100 per cent.

“We’ve got some contingency plans in place (for me) to get through to the end of the season, and there’s some things we can do at the end of the season to fix it.

“There’s procedures that can fix it, it’s a very short recovery that don’t involve too much, so that’s something that, once the end of the season comes, we’ll do then.”

While Wines is focused on his football, rumours have swirled about his future, with pundits linking the midfielder with North Melbourne. But Wines scoffed at the suggestion he would move clubs, instead declaring he wanted to retire as a Power player.

“I haven’t heard anything about that – it could be all gospel in the media – but I’ve got two years left at Port Adelaide,” he said.

“I’m a Port Adelaide player through and through, and I’m here for the rest of my career and that’s that. I love this club and hopefully I retire here.”

Funny how the Media float that we 'should' go after an experienced big-bodied mid like Wines or Parker to help our kids develop, then report it like it was our idea when they inevitably shut it down..

What a cesspool industry the Media is..

wouldnt it be something in line with what we gave up for Dylan Stephens? whats the difference?
We gave up pick 44 and what will probably end up a pick in the mid-low 20s this year for Dylan Stephens and pick 25 last year.

So we swapped Disco for pick 44 and effectively this years spare second rounder for a second rounder last year. We then used it to trade into the late first round.

Another epic fail by rAWLING!!!

He did have a shot at the media, not us in that article tho.

I only read that cos the headline mentioned heart surgery and I wondered if he was gonna chop out a bit of his and give it to that gutless w***er that doesn't have one.

What do you mean when you say see him for what he is.
As the article says he's more a third tall / rebounding defender. So many people focussed on his height he'd assuming he'd be a KPD without actually looking at his skillset.

You keep suggesting this but I don't understand it.

Shiels plays mainly as a defensively minded mid with good ground coverage and provides an experienced head to guide the younger troops. Phillips does not address those requirements.

Unless Will is exploring a flank, he has take a spot off another inside mid.

Excluding LDU because of his running capacity, that puts Will head to head with Wardlaw or Powell.
He’s playing the tagging role at vfl level now and covered the ground well

And I’d much rather get games into him than the bloke joining our recruiting team next year

Good, didnt want anyway.

Powell will rip him out new one next year.

Can understand the hesitation in targeting an established mid due to it costing us cap/draft capital but it’s bigger picture than this.

Folks on this forum have identified it and it’s come straight from the horses mouth that LDU needs help shouldering the midfield while our young blokes come of age.

Speaking completely hypothetically here but if going after someone like Yeo cost us our Zurhaar comp but was the linchpin in us retaining LDU next year I’m sure most of you would agree we need to pull the trigger

Couple of things should we be chasing a player that’s having a heart procedure and secondly Wines “ I love this place”you know what that means

Yeah I would’ve thought so.
Would there be many options though?
I haven’t watched much oppo footy, not sure what teams are screaming for a wilphil type
Anyone in the 6-14 range of top four without a particularly stellar midfield. I would expect that the following clubs would see his attributes and character and be confident that they could get a decent player out of him:

  • Hawthorn
  • St Kilda
  • Adelaide
  • Richmond
  • West Coast

Even Geelong or Port would back their system in to turn his fortunes around. And it wouldn’t cost them very much for the experiment.

Agree, but I’m pretty sure the Yeo idea is dead in the water at this point.

Hay? Out of all the possible examples you use Hay? How long ago was that?

Both would be worth nothing more than a second rounder each. Simple. And they'd be worth even less if there was some sort of need for a salary dump involved as well.

Multiple firsts! Hahahaha

Ummm we gave out a lot more than 2nd rounders.

Our off field departments have been quite amateruish at times.

15 million for 10 years, we match mate and ask for 2 first rounders.

If the saints is the team he goes too, then we could get 2 top 5 picks.

Appears so, and seems unlikely we’re going to shake any quality talent loose from any other clubs.

But realistically we only need a big bodied role player. There’s a good chance LDU will deal with tags for the rest of his career as a player with his level of explosiveness around stoppage.

We need someone that can feed the young mids in the meantime when LDU gets locked down or has a bad game while the young guys build the tank to win their own ball in his absence. May be anywhere between 1-3 years

There are no consequences for spin and outright lies from football “journalists”. It’s gotten to the point where if the AFL had any integrity left, they should fine their employees (I realise journalists are contracted by newspapers/channels, but really the AFL owns all of it really so it’s semantics at the end of the day).
