I'm disappointed but not surprised that we caved, but in hindsight I might be happy about it. Now we pick after West Coast, they can cop the month of Bo Allen going to them in every conversation here and every phantom draft instead of us.

Seriously though, pick 14 better be a small forward of some description.

Was just told by someone who know that Richmond are chucking in 100 to 200k a year for his contract.

I think we are still in the Warner game as since we will be taking a 1st rounder this year we can trade 2 futures 1st next year. Whether we should is another question.

On balance we have some chance of getting him without trading our 2027 first since you'd think that unless they are mainlining the bathwater down at West Coast they are not going want to give up multiple high firsts for Warner without getting lower firsts back. I.E. We're in the ballpark with what we will have value wise, so it just comes down to how much money Warner is willing to give up for short to medium term success.

Only snag will be West Coast doing 'well enough' that they could be considered to have turned the corner.

FFS Bolton was a contracted player

Warner will be out of contract

these situations are not the same

FFS how does Warner being out of contract change how much trade capital we can offer vs what the Eagles can offer. Sure being out of contract means he will probably go for less but it doesn’t give us an advantage over WC. Anyone who thinks a player doesn’t chose a club before his manager has clarified that the club in question has got the salary cap required and draft capital to meet his current clubs expectations doesn’t know how this works.

No one. He is getting the same spread over 5 years. Basically 950k per year
He doesn't end up any worse off financially for this either. Working on 1.2m a year (which I believe is an inflated figure based on a bunch of triggers he "could" hit) over 4 years he takes home about 665k a year for 4 years = 2.66m. If that same 4.8m is spread over 5 years that equals 960k a year, or 540k a year for 5 years = 2.7m. Of course this is assuming the salary is evenly distributed over the 5 years.

Professional athletes don't get assessed for tax per year, its a rolling thing (maybe 3 years) or at least used to be.

We have enough draft capital for an out of contract player. No one has been priced out of a player having access to all their picks

We're in the Warner game because he'll likely nominate us and not West Coast, primarily because:

1) We'll be contending, they won't.
2) He's got 3 or 4 good mates he went through Junior ranks with at Easts.

Draft capital isn't irrelevant, but also not as important as some are making out. We can use futures, and have some quality NGA coming through next two years. Set up very nicely to be fair.

You know that for a fact do you?

Well no but as someone with a functioning brain, players pick where they want to go.
If he wants to go to west coast that’s where he’ll go.

Now stop stamping your foot and looking like a twat

Ah OK, I'm no accountant obviously haha. But it still stands to reason he doesn't take home less money by spreading it over 5 than getting it all in 4 doesn't it? .
