Unrestricted Free Agent.

No club has ever let someone the calibre of battle become one of those at 25/26 after drafting them.

That's how we are responsible if the compo is garbage.

Btw- Battle not being cemented in our best 22 (as a 23 year old) when he signed his last contract is a complete myth- he finished top 10 in our bnf in september 2022.
He signed his last contract with us in august 2022.

From aug 2022:
Battle has become a permanent fixture in Brett Ratten’s backline in 2022, playing all 19 games since moving down there alongside Dougal Howard and Cal Wilkie.

After being drafted from the Dandenong Stingrays as a key forward, Battle has played all over the ground until producing a career-best season as a defender.

The 193cm, 92kg backman is rated elite among key defenders for disposals, kicks, marks and metres gained across the first 20 rounds.

Our club have plenty of responsibility for letting him become an unrestricted free agent.
That results in us not being able to force a trade if the likely compo sucks.

We made our bed back in 2022- now we need to lie in it if it's band 2.
He was unhappy with Ratten, was looking to move then, Mowman are you lurking about? He can confirm that.

I would say he and his manager said two only and Saints said ok but that brings you to UFA so you dont get top $$.

Surmising of course and we let it be known last trade period if we got the right deal Battle was available.

Adding 2+2 = 6 With Battle not really settled and when they found out he was shopped, he thought, stuff this I'm off.

Not completely all the clubs fault, but certainly clumsy and the result is no Battle.

If we dont get pick 8 which is minimum compo, it is as big a disaster as Luke Ball for nothing in my view,

it didnt bring him to UFA though... the contract we gave him low in $$$ did. which if he's unhappy with the senior coach... isn't the greatest move for someone whos top 10 in your B&F.

we knowingly gave a guy a contract and terms that would put him in UFA territory. then ****ed around with the negotiations. its not a good look.

if they gave him a decent contract he would have been RFA. given hawks interest in barrass, we would have had the whip hand in any discussions.

"so when you coming back to Victoria? we could do with a player like yourself and I know we've offered you a lot more money than I'm on!"

That "shopped around" was also Mitch Cleary talking about his managers asking about when he was fighting persistent injury.

If we get end of first which we won’t that’s actually about his value imo.

Pick 8 for a teens pick and a 2nd rounder is an absolute scam and not A+ in the slightest, especially since Perryman compo will push things back while Kako and Marshall will also push 2nd rounders back. We'd need 2 teens picks at minimum
Happily take two teens picks for Pick 8 but I always fall back on a bit of advice my granny gave me

"Sonny - spit in one hand, wish in the other and see which one gets full first."

lol trade radio saying clayton oliver looking to be traded again... TBH if i was melb just get rid of him... too much drama.

This might as well be the tassie draft with Richmond expected to have, 1,6,9,13,17

Add 21, 22 (Graham compensation) and 29 to the list.

Surely we can get one of those picks.

If Richmond do end up with 8 picks under pick 30, then sensible list management would be trying to slide some of these to 2025. Otherwise you have a bulge of 8 players coming up at the end of their initial contracts, being in similar development time lines etc. They have the picks to do very well this year, plus to trade to ensure that they have multiple great future picks too.

Logic would suggest that a number of clubs, including St Kilda, North Melbourne etc are looking at what can be done to get an extra pick or two this year from Richmond.

RFA would have required paying him over $700k a year off of at that point, not even a full season of good football.

The closest "breakout" player have at the moment around the same age is Cooper Sharman. I rate Sharman but to pay him the equivalent wage now would be a contract of like 900K with the uipcoming salary cap. You would balk at that right now so retrospectively shitting on the club for not making that deal isnt fair.

you think the top 25% of our club were each on more than 700k a year? who are they?

This argument doesn't work when you consider Gresham was RFA
