Hawthorn have been our Achilles heel my entire lifetime.

I still think we wouldn't have won in 1990 if we had to get past Hawthorn in a final, after they flogged us at VFL Park by about 15 goals a couple of weeks before the finals...
I watched the 2011 prelim at a Hawk mates house with 3 other Hawk supporters. God must have decided "Ok ya Collingwood flog thats enough joy at Hawthorns expense for another 20 year for you"

Did you know that Pendles has a positive W/L record against every team except Geelong (13-15) and Hawthorn (drumroll.... 8-19!!! )

Was. Buddy’s goal was an all time classic. Daisy tacking Cyril. Intense of a last 5 minutes as you’ll see. I’ve blocked out 2018 in this statement
I’m a bit younger so haven’t seen as much footy. But it’s up there for me as the most intense and tough game I’ve ever seen. Absolutely nowhere to hide for players not willing to put their body on the line. Very different to the style of footy we see now.

We were on fumes by then and the Hawks were emerging as a force

Look, Hawks might miss the eight but the idea that it could happen because the Crows and Freo did is really shallow reasoning.

Crows had the 2023 they did on the back of their older heads(go have a look at their B&F results from that year), once Tex(and Laird) dropped off so did the side, and they added no one of value in the off-season leading into 2024.
Freo, like the Crows had queries over their coach and also lost quite a few players via trade heading into 2024.

Not really apples for apples when looking at Hawthorn.
The apples for apples is "Team improved a lot this year, surely progression is linear and lock them in for the 8 next year"

Nah that 2011 pies side was sensational. So dominant that year. One of the most underrated teams of the modern era and would be rated higher if they won that flag (obviously, but you get what I’m saying).
Yep.

Probably the best non premier since the turn of the century.

1. Collingwood 2011
2. Geelong 2008
3. St. Kilda 2009

Collingwood and St. Kilda desperately unlucky they peaked at the same time as the best multi year team I have ever witnessed - Geelong 2007 to 2011.

Let’s assume this all comes true (of course we don’t wish injuries to any players)…

I still think it was worth it to win a premiership with this squad.

With Craig McCrae, there's been a 'big change' in directorship. All out on experienced and older players is something I've never seen before, hence why many see a cliff coming with 2025 being make or break year for the club. Even at Geelong over the past 15 years or so with our normal group of experienced and older players, will still had a few potential excellent youngsters going through the system, with the Cats current group of youngsters 'top notch'.

2025 has got to be the year the Magpies make a big push for flag with their exceptionally experienced and talented group of older players, otherwise it's going to be very tough from that point onwards with very few top young players coming through. But it's definitely something I'll be watching with interest to see how things pan-out, given Fly's comment regards the 2024 drafts 'I don't want picks, I want players'. Maybe topping up each year with experienced and talented players from other clubs and not relying on speculative draft picks could be a successful strategy and might indeed work to some point, but I've gotta say Fly is one very brave man..... however only time will be the true adjudicator.

It's pretty amazing to see stats that are so out of line with all other indicators, but remarkably the same can be said at all clubs verses opposition clubs to some degree but more-so with the one above mentioned, as it's not just a given playing group performing well against another, as this is over a long period of time,..... as I said it's pretty amazing stat!

It's Geelong 2008 then daylight as the most forsaken premiership this century. Richmond 2018 a distant second
At very least you'd have to put Collingwood equal second as they never lost to any other club for entire year, including finals..... that's some achievement!
It's actually not a bad call (the first post), only because Geelong were so powerful during both 2009 and 2011, they were very deserving premiers in those years, despite St. Kilda 2009 and Collingwood 2011 being two of the very best single season teams since the turn of the century.

Richmond 2018 was in the middle of a weak era, and no teams (including Richmond themselves despite being the clear best team in the competition during the home and away rounds) were anywhere the strength of Geelong 2008/09/11, or Collingwood 2011, or St. Kilda 2009.

If one disregards the age profile then Collingwood have a very strong line-up. Their only decent national draft pick outside of Daicos since 2021 is McCreery, but that doesn't necessarily hurt them in 2025.

They can have a very good year if their aging brigade perform. It does feel like they're kicking the can down the road, but that will matter little if they salute next season.

I also think Carlton are very well placed. Should be an interesting season.

We didn’t have any choice really. No early draft picks. It wasn’t a deliberate policy - we were hopeful our 2020-23 draftees would have come on better.

Did you read my post at all?

I have 8 groupings
Group 1) Top 4 - Brisbane
Group 2) Top 8 - Sydney, Western Bulldogs
Group 3) Great top end talent, no depth. If healthy, finals, injuries/suspensions, trash - Carlton, Melbourne
Group 4) Can be anything from competing with Brisbane for a premiership to competing with North Melbourne for 17th - Adelaide, Collingwood, Fremantle, Geelong
Group 5) They're finals quality, but could be squeezed out depending on whether other teams jump them - Greater Western Sydney, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide
Group 6) Not a finals quality team, but if everything goes right, they might nab a spot and lose an elimination final - Essendon, Gold Coast, St Kilda, West Coast
Group 7) No mans land - North Melbourne
Group 8) Wooden Spoon - Richmond

Though, I do feel I am being harsh on Gold Coast and lenient on Melbourne. Hmmmmm
