Every time I watch Seth Campbell, I get a tear in the eye....reckon the kid can really play.

I was particularly keen on him in the 2022 draft, especially after he kicked a lazy 10 goals in one of his first senior outings for Nth Launceston. We could have had him with our first pick in the rookie draft, but chose to re-rookie 32yo Ed Curnow instead.....Tiggs took him with the pick after ours.

Bit of a sliding door moment for mine, but unfortunately we were committed to re-rookie Ed for a final season.

I think we are at a crossroads, I don’t advocate blowing everything up but I don’t see a flag out of this list, or even regular top 4/6 finishes.

We could come out and roll hawthorn and everything looks ok again, but at this distance it seems unlikely. End of 2023 was a perfect storm of a lot of injury prone guys miraculously getting their bodies right at the same time, now many of those are either gone off the list or another 18 months older with even more injuries and miles on the clock.

Gone from that period (guys who played games and contributed in back half of 2023)
Marchbank
Cuningham
Owies
Martin
Kennedy
Dow
Fisher

Guys still around but below the level from that period
Walsh
Cerra
McGovern
Saad
Motlop
Doc

Missing injured currently
Curnow
Pitt
Newman
Cincotta
Boyd
Durdin
Smith
Fantasia
Curnow

Regulars/depth since then who’ve come in
Williams
Elijah hollands (though not around currently)
Lord
Evans
Lucas camporeale
Binns
Haynes

That leaves the ones playing at the same level or better from later 2023 are:

Cripps (same)
McKay (well until last night)
Acres (same)
Hollands (who needs to get better)
Cottrell (similar)
TDK (improved)
Kemp (still average, needs to get better)
Young (dropped back half of 23 still looks to be backup at best)
Weiters (still great )

Basically the only player on our list I’d consider improved would be TDK from 2023, and maybe Boyd at a pinch. So it’s a mix of factors as I see it, guys who can’t play at the same level, guys who haven’t improved and our depth taking a hit with the loss of Kennedy, dow (more Kennedy) and owies. Now that is hopefully a short term hit to depth, but it’s made worse with Jagga out for the season.

So simply we have far to few regular contributors playing week in week out

Last night was a reflection of Austin's poor list management in the first 4 years of his tenure. Last year he pivoted to at least try to recruit difference makers like Jagga Smith and O'Farrel with Charleson and Carrol adding some run and Carry.
I definitely think the recruiting department requires change. However, we need to play Carrol, Moir at the soonest opportunity and bring O'farrel in as early as possible. Selecting the likes of Haynes, Evans, White, Fogarty & Docherty is built on the erroneous assumption that a top 4 finish is achievable with average list cloggers and veterans surrounding our stars.

I think I’ve made my decision with TDK as well.

He’s a gun, but I would let him walk to st kilda and take the compensation. Bank the cap space and target the next Meek/Nank/Cameron that goes on the ruck merry go round. That player will be on half of the money we’re offering tdk. Use the other half to fill our other needs. It makes too much sense from a team building perspective.

please whoever is involved in list management and the football department of Carlton FC -the game is called FOOTball.. If player can't kick efficiently and effectively we don't want --- Kepp it simple from here on out-- thanks

Mongrel

I’m the same with TDK …I would give him a good offer that doesn’t kill our salary cap and if he walks so be it …I believe you can win a premiership with an average workmanlike ruckman … I’m also leaning towards putting Harry out there and see what comes back …

So many stories like this due to terrible recruiting. Some players that spring to mind. Deluca, Evans, O'Shea's, Ed Curnow, Haynes While other clubs pick up players like Massimo DAmbrosio, Nick Martin, Toby Bedford. etc.

I agree, the worst thing Collingwood did years ago was pay through the nose to keep Grundy.

As for Harry. Key forwards and good forward/rucks are worth good coin. I think we need him. Mainly for that forward/ruck role.

We need small/medium forwards. Badly. We don't need top line prize draft picks. What did Collingwood get Bobby Hill for? Most small forwards aren't taken with high picks, plenty of examples out there.

We need 2nd and 3rd rounders.

We have a plethora of backs.

Is Ollie Hollands going to cut it? Can we salvage something from Elijah with a trade? Is McGovern the missing piece for some side to get us a third? Any interest in Binns? Can we offload a member of our onball group? Kemp and/or DeKoning might be going off our books at the end of the season. If that happens the return would be really good.

If DeKoning goes we need another ruck. I don't trust O'Keefe or Pittonet. Break down too much. A mature option would do.

I don't trust our recruiting team when it comes to forwards. I don't think they have the eye for it. That's the problem with our current team. The better sides have electric pace at half forward, we have plodders. None of our current forwards have the skillset or read the game well. We just can not pick them.

List profile is wrong. Too slow, too contested-centric. Will take years to fix it, and that timeline only starts when the list managers realise.
There to reactionary.
You could see the game starting to head towards more speed 2 years ago!
We seem so slow to see what’s happening/read the way the game is headed.

never over pay for a ruckman …pitto for mine is just cover and insurance against the bigger bodied ruckman and when your number 1 banana needs a rest…. Who knows what HOK will be like , still young but looks promising …. I’m not saying trade mckay but see what is out there … I wouldn’t be disappointed if we traded him for someone decent or picks … Cripps , weiters , curnow or Walsh I don’t want to trade and I feel to get better we need to offload one …. Ollie hollands back to the wing … I actually think he busted a gut yesterday , gets the most out of himself …. Kemp is average back or forward .. I don’t rate him … EH who knows if he wants to clean his act up and want to play footy ,, I rate EH highly but you can’t make someone commit to the grind … and McGovern .. we wouldn’t get anything…you ever seen unusual suspects with Kevin spacey … he has fooled everyone he can play !!!

I agree with never overpaying for ruckmen.

We can't trade McKay. If we trade McKay, we immediately become desperate for a second ruck which we don't have. That would be dumb listmanagement.

HOK will be just a ruckman. He looks promising but is a slow burn. His body is a worry, keeps doing hamstrings.

Acres is a top level wingman and Lucas Camporeale deserves his spot. Lucas will be a ball magnet. For a winger his IQ is good.

I rate Kemp but he is a third tall either end. We keep playing him as key position which is because of injuries but this is his go. Same as McGovern.

McGovern is a damn good footballer and has played some good footy for us. He's missed a lot through injury. But I think at his age, we need to be thinking about someone else.

H
I'm not sure the list is as good as people want to believe and have serious question marks over Harry Mckay and Walsh. I have already put a red line through McGovern and Williams who are just eeking out the last of their AFL currency now - Docherty for all his good bloke and good citizen clubman and endeavour is past it. E Hollands has just passed a massive dump on the Club ( anotehr example of entitled lack of discipline) We have not ONE decent small forward - not one apart from the rare days Fantasia can run a game out. We are lacking a 2nd KPD and it costs every game.

I could go on - these are not new data points....

on Coaching

I think Voss has one idea about how the game should be played - and I think most opposition coaches know how to beat it.

The conundrum is that the issues that make Carlton NOT a real contender for a flag are a combination of players and coaches - I use the coach thing s a plural they all take collective responsibility. So we are where we are and I don't think it is an easy fix - sans significant changes.

The most "irking" thing about the whole situation is that the team can go from looking like flag winners in one quarter of football to spooners in the next - and it happens in every game.

The team could go out and beat Hawthorn next week in a close grind all going well because Charlie kicked 5 and Harry was given an easy run to kick 3 OR lose by 100 points - this is what we have in Voss's 4th year.
Here here!
Very accurate JB

The issue is that we are not in the premiership window at all, so on this basis tough decisions will need to be made, not sure aside from Weitering & Cripps our other highly paid players are justifying their large contracts.

Charlie at his best is absolutely worth his contract. At this stage McKay and Walsh would be an interesting watch but the likelihood is neither will ever be traded.

If either we're I'd imagine it would be purely to get in the race for Reid coming home.
