Problem is over recent history gun ruckman rarely win premierships.

Off the top of my head, Gawn and Cameron are the last ones I can think off.

Tom’s no doubt a required player and makes us better when he plays, but we need to think about the whole list and the future.

We have too many top shelf $1m players on the list, that hamper us each trade period.

I’d offer Tom a fair $800-$850k+ what ever years makes him happy. If Tom wants to go elsewhere, then we get compensated either by FA compo or forcing the club to trade.
100%
IMO a gun ruck is the “crown jewel” looks fantastic, get paraded around occasionally but spends most it’s time locked in the tower - but it’s a key symbol of wealth and power.

You don’t need a $1m ruck to win a flag - but on paper it seems like u do.

Don’t get me wrong TDK will be an amazing player & will turn games - but big, serviceable around the ground, doing the right things (floating forward, getting to the right spots in Defence/bail out kick) & taking a good contested grab will suffice.
TDK is likely to be in contention to take a grab to win a car - less spectacular but still taking the mark gets u the exact same field position.

End of the day - every player on the field for our side should have better disposal then our ruckman, we should want them with ball in hand over a $1m + ruck trying to do everything to “prove” there worth.

Well I can tell you one thing, we aren’t winning a flag with Pitto. So it’s TDK or find someone else cheaper.

sigh...

No, not true.

Doesn't mean we will, but we can. And I literally just spelled out how it could be done.

Just to confirm Bletch. Do we have a total of 8 list spots available?

Are we likely to take 5 on the main list via the draft and updating Boyd?

The remaining 3 spots to come from a combination of rookie, dfa, ssp and Duffy?

7.
Boyd will move from the Rookie List to the Senior List at the end of the draft.
Taking that move into account gives us 4 Senior spots and 3 Rookie spots.

Duffy is cat B, there's a spot set aside for him.

Right now we're at 31/4/1, and once you account for Boyd being elevated and Duffy and Campo twins coming onboard, you're looking at either 34/3/2, or 33/4/2.

If you assume another 2 draft picks, you're at 36/3/2 or 35/4/2. So that's still 3 open list spots, and I have to assume we're not going to keep 2 open for SSP.

Expect at least one DFA signing tomorrow, and hopefully we don't do our usual low expectations addition.

Stam and Jim have summed it up perfectly. Yes, there are 8 spots, but one is a Cat-B for Duffy, so can be ignored. If we make no further changes between now and the National Draft, we will be allocated 7 picks in the draft. Clearly, we won't/can't use them all (as at the very least we have to elevate Boyd), but it gives us more than we need to cater for bids on Ben and maybe Lucas.

Likelihood is that we use 3-4 picks at the national draft. We've already indicated we're keeping at least one (and probably only that one) for the SSP. That leaves 2 or 3 picks to be used between DFA signing(s), the rookie draft and the PSD.

If, as Jim said, we take a DFA pick tomorrow, our ND picks drop from 7 to 6. But that is inconsequential, as the pick we lose is a 5th round pick, worth no points.

Have a look at the Threadmarked post for more detail.

Jack Gunston available in RD now before Hawks re-rookie

We won't sign a DFA.

Probably take best undated kid in the RD with the first pick, then maybe McMahon.

Leave 1 spot for a SSP rookie

If we were going to take him, why wouldn't we pick up McMahon as a DFA, rather than risk him in the rookie draft?

What makes you so sure we won't take a DFA? I really don't know either way, but we certainly have the capacity to do so.

We can only take as many picks to the draft as we have open list spots. If we sign a DFA that is one less pick we can take to match campo bids.

Wish I had a dollar for every time I've responded to this comment/question on this thread!

We currently have 7 available spots, meaning 7 picks at the draft. The 7th is a round 5 pick, pick 89. It's worth zero points. Using it on a DFA prior to the draft doesn't hurt our ability to match bids one iota.

But with all the academy bids and people passing in the 30s and 40s it'll get points! :drunk:
