I found today's "Gettable", on the AFL app, quite interesting.

From about the 12min mark Twomey discusses Trade/FA approach vs the draft.

Top 10 Brownlow 2024 - 1 not drafted by club.
14 club B&F winners drafted by club.
Top 21 vote getters in Players Assoc Award - 17 drafted by club.

Cripps, Serong, Gulden, Butters, McLuggage, Max Holmes, Merrett, Newcombe, A Brayshaw, Noah Anderson and N Daicos (FS but still drafted)

Trade/FA certainly has its place and needs to be done occasionally to fill areas of need, but primarily the best team's lists are built through the draft. Just gotta get the selections right.

You certainly build your core of talent through the draft, trades fill a need with known talent

Yep. Really like the way ours is building.
I've previously stated I'm quite satisfied with what Nick Austin's done since landing in 2020.
As was said when he joined us, the powers that be think he has what it takes to build a premiership list.
Imo his choices (with what he had to work with picks wise) have started to show something, albeit a small sample so far.
Just waiting to see the "fruit" ripen, so to speak.
Hopefully won't have to wait long. Next year would be nice

I still see his selections as conservative, as in, players with high floors, but adding the likes of Moir and Lemney does improve that balance

Fair enough
Just curious what you mean by conservative and high floors.
Are there any particular players around the picks Austin has had, that you would have preferred, for us?

High floors as in less of a bust, which is a good thing, but might limit the ceiling

I would have taken Weddle ahead of Ollie, but maybe the plan was to target his brother as well.

Hewett too, bur concede that he might be a flight risk

Happy with Cowan, but preferred others ahead of him and Binns

FWIW I really wanted Weddle too but happy with OH as long as he continues to track the way he is. Bit more core strength and size would be nice, whilst still maintaining agility etc
That's where Innes comes in. Our whole teams core strength is not the same as the top sides. Wasn't surprised by his comment about that when he first assessed us on joining. I saw it throughout the season.
OH would want to come on coz I reckon Weddle will be a

To be fair it wasn't really Hollands or Weddle. There were another 6 picks taken after Hollands before Weddle was taken and at pick 18 everyone pretty much had a chance to take him.

Weddle has a bit of "looks like Tarzan plays like Jane" about him at times although he got a bit better as the season progressed.

Ollie will surprise many. He's a very professional young man.

I don't go on where players are taken or projected to be taken, just purely how I see quality of player
