Ok, now this gets interesting.

DGB joins Sam Durds and Matt Carroll as players who have been invited to train on for a list spot in the SSP.

Assuming there haven't been any rule changes since last year, this would mean we are planning on having two SSP places open - can invite 2 players per list spot. Prob means we would also invite a fourth player to train on.

Yes Jordan 👍

Interesting that this has happened before the draft. It had to happen, as he couldn't stay on the Rookie list, but was expecting it to happen post ND. This changes the numbers a little bit - we'll now take just the six picks to the draft (does not affect points, as the 7th pick would have been a 5th round pick).

List as it currently stands:-

32 Senior players
1 Category A Rookies
2 SSP Rookies
0 Category A International Rookie ?
1 Category B International Rookie
0 Category B Rookie

Still haven’t seen anything official from the Club on Duffy.
Only saw it mentioned on the AFL website.

Given today was the cutoff for international signings, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's done, but the club in its wisdom hasn't bothered to tell us.

It still gets formalised at the draft I believe so don't think anything has changed. Could be wrong.

I thought they'd do it that way too, but...

"He has been promoted to the senior list ahead of the 2024 Telstra AFL Draft which begins next Wednesday evening. The following day will see the continuation of the national draft, before the draft concludes on Friday afternoon with the pre-season and rookie drafts. "

Pretty clear it's been done ahead of the draft.

With Boyd (and Haynes) we’ve got 32 Senior players.

What were those reasons?

Combination of things…
Development in his role, his strength is as that 3rd tall interception role, fitness and running needed improvement, adding size & body strength, player’s ahead of him in his role (Barrass/Battle) trades, not everything works out sometimes…

Ah ok. As in a train on spot or an actual list spot?

Hawks clearly rated him higher then DGB as Phillips was the one they were going to keep if the Barrass trade failed.

Not necessarily rated higher - Phillips has DGB covered by a few cm, and looks like he'd comfortably have a few kgs on him too.

DGB has stagnated seemingly because he's not genuine KPD material, and Hawthorn are pretty well covered for third tall interceptors. They tried building his body up without any appreciable success, and they tried swinging him forward - he had a couple of good outings up forward at VFL level, but clearly not consistent enough for them to persist.

Happy to have him train on with us, could be a solid depth third tall at both ends and if we like him enough he could be a replacement for Gov and Haynes. Gov's contracted til 2026, at the end of which he'll be turning 22. Not sure he's the type to be playing into his mid 30s. Haynes came over on a one year deal only - if his body holds up all year he may go again, but if he struggles a bit then it might be a coaching gig for 2026. DGB for depth with further development over 12-18 months could be a seamless transition into that role. And I reckon we'd still look to draft a genuine KPD at 38 if possible too, on the basis they'll likely need 3+ years of development before they're senior-ready.

Phillips is the better player but would be a Durdin replacement, something I don't think we need on our AFL list.
Given we've got a mature back up in Young, I'd want the club pursuing someone to develop longer term..

All lists must be poor then

All lists must be poor then
Just the Carlton list is far worst than Lions, Tigers & Pies. Your arguement falls down when list quality is solely managed on the number of list changes per year & needs to be balanced to include retirements, trades. The key factor is the quality of player brought in to improve the list. Carlton's list quality was far from top flight 2 years ago.
