Itā€™s just an observation and certainly nothing personal. I hope he makes it but from what Iā€™ve seen I doubt he can be an effective small forward on a premiership contending team. He looks like a small midfielder to me who might be ok as a pressure high half forward but I donā€™t think we need him to play that role.

My original point was we are very weak in the small forward department - possibly bottom four in the league - and itā€™s an area we have been poor for a number of years. We need Williams, Motlop, Durdin and Fogarty to play well above any level they have played in their career to get where we want to get to.

I think if they can play at the level they have shown and remain relatively injury we will be fine. Williams and Fogarty both had strong contributions in the fwd line last year. Motlop and Durdin are still relatively young and have both shown glimpses.

We will also add Moir to that mix next year and should see Smith, E. Hollands and Cottrell spending time FWD.

To be eligible for the SSP, players must have nominated for the most recent AFL Draft or previously been on an AFL list.
Clubs will have two windows to formally sign a player via the SSP: November 27 to December 14 and January 15 to February 19.

Only two players can audition during the pre-season per list spot available, with a maximum of six players able to trial at the same club at one time.
Triallists will be paid a minimum of $1,000 per week to train, with clubs also responsible for the cost of return airfares and accommodation if the player is invited to train with an interstate club.

So how then do we appear to have 5 on trial (White, McMahon, DGB, S. Durdin and M Carroll) with only, as I understand it, 2 spots available? Glad to see McMahon and White getting a look at, similarly Carroll and I understand a head-to-head battle between 2 KDs in DGB and SD given we probably need one more KD. Not sure DGB is a KD and SD keeps getting let down by his body but if the club believes that might turn around for whatever reasons I can understand giving him a look at because he has proven he has AFL quality IF FIT. So happy to have a look at them all, just not sure how we can. If we had to drop one off the train-on list who would you drop? Fer me it would be SD because we have a good idea of what he can and can't do and it is more a matter of if his body stands up to it and that can be monitored without him necessarily being a train-on, eg I presume he could train with the VFL squad. The others we need more of a look at especially DGB who hasn't been in our system even at VFL level.

Unsure of the rules and their implementation here, but when I was doing the ins and outs on the list, it was notable how we lost more forwards and gained defenders.

Forwards out:

Martin, Owies, Cuningham

Forwards in:

Williams (def to fwd) Kemp (def to fwd)?

Defenders out

Akeui, Marchbank, Williams (def to fwd), Kemp (def to fwd)

Defenders in

Haynes, O'Farrell, Charleson, L. Camporeale (probably a wing)

With S.Durdin and M.Carroll in limbo

So not surprised to see a small forward given a trial

Thinking Will White getting a train on opportunity confirms what I thought. Charleson, while a decent prospect as a defender was not our first choice for the rookie draft.(Day-Wicks?) We want a forward option, clearly.

Will get a chuckle if we go with McMahon and White who have been in front of us all along.

Decent chance another defender/rebounder may have closed the door on Matt Carroll.(IMO)

Possible that the AFL isnt so strict on this particularly given 4 of the 5 are already part of our program. Might have just needed to ask permission

I know I'm a broken record, but signing McMahon is a no brainer imo.

He's still only 22yo, so now approaching the age where key forwards start to mature. Proven goal kicker (2nd overall in the VFL) and won our B&F....not sure what more he needs to do to earn a spot.

Anyway, I digress. If H or Charles go down for an extended period during the season, we're in all sorts. You can start plugging holes or trying to manufacture a makeshift forward half week after week. Or throw TDK up there at the expense of our ruck, and bring Pitto in as our 1st ruck. Or throw JSOS or Kemp there as a key marking option week after week, and pray for the best.

Of course we've got Lemmey - but at the end of last year when we our arses were hanging out the seat of our pants with a huge injury toll, no key forwards, and only 27 odd players to choose from, big Lem was still kcking the dew off the grass in the VFL....which just demonstrates the MC don't have the confidence right now to give him a crack at senior level. That may change over summer, but if it doesn't, we're back to bare bones.

For mine, we desperately need another forward who can take a big grab and kick goals. Who knows, McMahon may become our Logan Morris as that 3rd tall mobile marking forward.

Out of our other train ons, I'm not convinced in the slightest with DGB, Carroll now appears to be surplus especially after today, and big Nigel can't be trusted to get onto the park. I'd be taking McMahon and leave the other spot for the mid season draft....unless the next Eddie Betts/Jeff Garlett small forward happens to fall on our laps.

Wasnā€™t McMahon the VFL leading goal kicker?
He would be a really good back up to either Charlie or Harry and a long way in front of Lemmey who I think will struggle for another contract, Iā€™m worried we donā€™t have key defensive cover, unsure if McMahon can play down back.

Take a chance on the 22 year old instead of giving another deal to an injury prone older guy

It would suck if Lemmey was discarded 3-4 years quicker than the likes of LOB and SPS were.

Need to factor in that the 2s were woeful in the first half of the year with Carrol the most experienced player some games with only 7 or 8 list players. Philips was a terrible pick up as a VFL listed player. Provided nothing. By the end of the season with a few extra players back, Hayes and Lord joining the team and general improvement from the young Blues and the VFL listed players, they were competitive against some of the better sides.

If Harry Lemmey doesn't show something in 2025 he'll have been on the list for 3 years, time to make a decision on his future at the club.
Whats he meant to be showing? He's had plenty of good/decent games in the VFL in a team that got flogged all year. He's obviously not going to get games ahead of Curnow or Mckay, I see no issue with him developing in the VFL until they're done if he's continually improving.

Lem is a necessary luxury to keep on the list. If he continues to develop at his current rate, we'll have a ready-made replacement as soon as Harry/Charlie start slowing down. If he develops even faster, we might be able to fit him into the team or at worst we get a decent draft pick for him.

How much can he develop in a side that consistently gets flogged?

Theres no real solution either way. Mckay looked far better once he got into the 1s but now we have 2 AA level KPFs holding him out it doesn't really leave much wiggle room for Lem. Certainly wouldn't be making a call on him after this upcoming season if he continues to show promise.
