IMHO - problem with losing Newman is (amongst other things) we have lost our backlines best and most creative kick. Docherty does not use the ball well enough and I haven't really seen Cowan show the same kicking ability to this point. I think best chance of replacing Newmans kicking is have Boyd given the role. He has shown in the past he’s prepared to take the difficult option and has the kick to pull it off.

Just wish Weitering would have more of a go at the difficult option…I think he’s a very good kick, also.
Get the ball into Cowan's hands more, great kick. Boyd is a good one to have the ball in hand.

Newman. Love how he does his work. Tough, skilful, nasty, and smart. Hard to replace.

But noticed last year, at times, he was Young like at slowing play out from the back line.

Feel like that might have been also poor options ahead, which you can't see on the TV stream (I didn't get to many games last year).

Someone suggested Boyd take his role, and I like it, as he has the run Newman lacked, and excellent disposal. Just needs some maturity.

What we really lose with the injury is his ability to organise the half back line.

People saying play Doch there, and sure, he has the organisational ability of Newman, but those people are maybe forgetting his blind helicopters out of the defence that so often just came straight back.

He's been training wing, and mid, so I don't reckon they'll go with Doch down back.

Haynes experience will really help I think. Not that he can play Newman's role, more that he can maybe help Boyd, or the other name suggested, Cowan to take the right option.

I agree and have seen the light - Blues Brother Jordan “Jake” Boyd is the perfect replacement for Nic Newman, whilst he recovers from his injury.

We are blessed with more than adequate cover for this position.

No arguing Boyd has the skillset with the ball - just doesn’t gather it anywhere near the level Newman does…

May leave 1 for the mid season draft

If we are taking 3 during the SSP, I'd take Phillips, McMahon and Matt Carroll
We have three spots available now, if we take two and then get another injury, then we will have to wait until about pick 20-25 to get our second choice.

I think it’s likely that between now and June or whenever the cut off is, that we will have another LTI to open up another spot.

Take 3 players, doesn’t have to be 3 from our squad and see what happens in the MSD

I'd go Phillips, Carroll and White.

I still think we need more options in the small forward department.

I like McMahon, but I don't think he's a massive need for us and I have questions marks on how his game will translate at AFL level. I'm happy to rely on Lemmey as the tall forward back-up for this season. He seems to be tracking well.

I hope we go with three. Last year showed we need as many fit bodies as possible. I see it as between

1 of Durdin or Phillips
Maybe 1 of McMahon or DGB
1 or 2 of Carroll Evans and/or White

I found the last few years players looked to get the ball in Newman's hands, which probably boosted his numbers.

Against popular opinion I don't think Doc back is the option I would choose. He looked slow and was not copping with the pressure of playing down back. He has a habit of hack kicking over his shoulder when under pressure. I would prefer one of the other options and keep Doc on a wing.

Agreed, I too prefer him on a wing, even if it's more defensive minded

“Docherty slow and not coping with pressure down back”

When was this? 😳

I reckon we keep one for the MSD unless we have 3 standouts. Done pretty well from the MSD over the years.

Just thinking that out of the talls, McMahon may be the best all round backup key position as he can play forward and defence, whereas I believe the other two may be strictly defenders. I do like Phillips, though, as he is probably best in the air. Thoughts?

I realise that neither have played a game yet. But I think Billy Wilson or Lucas Camporeale have the capability to change the way we play (at least at the margins). If they tear it up in the VFL and we feel the need to mix things up, they might end up as viable replacements for Nic Newman.

Lucas is the more natural footballer and more likely to be the longer term replacement for Newman

Cowan Weitering Gov
Boyd Haynes Saad
Ollie

Next in line Doc if required, then Cincotta upon return

Outside chance this year for Lucas, but if we suffer more injuries early to the back half don't be surprised to see someone like Elijah or Cerra at HB or Kemp going back

I don't see Wilson featuring at this stage

We might even target an experienced option in the SSP

I'd take Phillips without thinking twice. We've got a heap of taller players that have some versatility, to varying degrees of course, but not much in the genuine key defender category. Broad key/tall/3rd categories from how I see it:

Key Def: Weitering, Young
Tall Def: Weitering, Haynes, Kemp, Silvagni, Young, O'Farrell (Curnow end of qtrs)
3rd Def: McGovern, Haynes, Kemp, Silvagni, Cowan, O'Farrell (Curnow end of qtrs)

Key Fwd: McKay, Curnow, De Koning, Lemmey, O'Keeffe
Tall Fwd: Curnow, McKay, Kemp, Silvagni, De Koning, Lemmey, O'Keeffe (Cripps rotation)
3rd Fwd: McGovern, Kemp, Silvagni, Moir (Cripps rotation)

Key defender, as in the D1 who's taking the big boys, is a clear standout for lack of depth.

Tall key defenders are definitely “short on the ground” for us (pun intended) - a side like Western Bulldogs (with there 200cm plus tall forward options) could definitely worry us with some mismatches - in particular if there midfield gets on top of us at times and provides there tall forwards with quick supply.

Are we short or is because people don't rate them?

We have Weitering (Star)
Young (I don't really rate) but is a genuine KPD
Minimum one of Phillips or Durdin who are both big bodies
Silvagni McGovern and Haynes who can play taller as can Kemp if needed
Not to mention Lemmey who has played KPD
O'Farrell is not ready but is on list

Not many lists have more than this

as for Bulldogs I see their talls as a possible weakness. If they don't mark it they get exposed very quickly. Neither Lions or Swans last year or even Pies year before went with "big" defensive line ups. More about mobility and run from defence

Most sides now have a key post (maybe a second) then more mobile players with some able to play taller if needed

100% and its what we need. A couple of these players that will step up and make a difference to what we have

Having Ollie Boyd Saad Wilson Lucas Cowan Docherty (Carroll and/or White) as running defender options is really exciting and IMO something we really need

I thought we may have used Smith off HB this year (ala Sheezel, Daicos) but I haven't seen him train there at all

I think Weitering and Young are the only two currently signed for 2025 who would be #1 key defenders, the others I'm fairly comfortable with 2nd tall (3rd only in some cases). If it's one or two games you can make do, but more than that & it's a worry. I'd definitely be going EP over SD for one of the SSP spots.

Has Lemmey played or trained much down that end of the ground? Will be interesting to see what happens with him this year, key fwd (not 3rd) appears a much more difficult position to earn selection than key def, and looking forward with Young, Hayes & EP/SD it could be beneficial to get him up & running down back

Players who I would assign the opposition Key Forward:

Weitering
Young
Depending on size match - Haynes

Still need to see JSOS play a full game in the backline, but maybe depending on size

Developing is O'Farrell, but if we need to call on him, the situation is dire.

Maybe Lemmey could swing back in a pinch.

Kemp and McGovern don't have the 1 vs 1 stuff down, and are a lot better as third talls.

We will definitely be taking one of Durdin or Grainger-Barass in the SSP for mine

Neither one appeals to me. I don't think Grainger-Barass is a 1 vs 1 gorilla killer, and I only remember Durdin as a pretty good spoiler (when he does get on the park). So, for me, it's Phillips as he not only can spoil well, but he can also take game-changing marks.
