The elite rucks have one thing in common, presence...

The word that comes to mind when I think of elite rucks is 'imposing'...

Nank, big and strong, Gawn, elite in the air and strong.

TDK has some attributes of a quality ruckman but he is not imposing enough for me and his presence is fleeting.

The whole 'he's like another midfielder' is not what I want from him. Give me 10-12 marks across HB and HF and a goal or 2 and I would be happy.

I worry that he is fragile and will break when he is faced with an imposing ruckman...
Yeah I agree with this sentiment. Is he good and possibly great? Yes.

But is his net impact against the opposing rucks at the $1.2 million level?

I get that people don’t want to pay ~$1.2mil for TDK but I am interested in who they see as his replacement.
Do we go with Pitto and look for an even cheaper back up? giving us a huge amount of money to chase players.
Or do we try to find a replacement? And what names are around? How much salary cap room would they take? Draft capital or FA etc?

ATM I’m keen to keep TDK because I would want a replacement and any that I could think of I don’t think would be overly cheap or the ones who would be cheap I don’t really rate.

I feel like he's a bit of a reflection on the whole team.

When things are going well, he's a very good interceptor with clean hands and looks elite in disposal.

When pressure is applied, he gets fumbly, marks suddenly slip through his hands and he misses targets.

He's not the only one, but you can see why he causes debate. He looks great, then he doesn't I think by now after how many years we know what he is - good when things go his way, not so good when pressure is applied.
Mitch McGovern sends his kids around corners to make sure there's no shadows waiting for him

I feel like we may be better letting him go at this point. We have a lot of expensive contracts, and our list balance clearly needs adjusting. He's a restricted free agent, so we could negotiate a trade and get better than band 1. Unfortunately, I think we're in a position where we need to rejuvenate the list, he has the value and the timing is right. The only downside with that is we'd be dealing with SOS who we know is a scrooge in these sorts of negotiations, but worst case scenario he leaves as FA and we just get band 1 compo, which may end up being a top 10 pick (hopefully not, but early signs aren't great).

Further, gun ruckmen don't seem to be a crucial step to getting a flag. Brisbane just won one with their backup, really all you need is a B grader in the spot. If we can get premium grade value for a position not essential in that process, then fine.
Look at meek for the hawks, he's exactly what you want. A better version of pitto, massive dude and knows where to tap, didn't cost the world, and it'd be a modest salary

I wanted him when he was still at tge Dickers and when he was departing

With targeting Jackson, it was bizarre that wanted to retain Darcy

Here’s an honest question; how many players on our list are known for their exquisite kicking skills? (D’ambrosio, Hayden Young, Jordan Dawson level).

Who would we classify as an A in that category?
0 another gripe is have with how we've profiled the list, chock full of slow extractors, absolutely no receivers with any speed or semblance of kicking nous.

TDK is a really tough one...

If he goes, he leaves another gaping hole in our list... oh and we'll get bugger all compo for him.

If he stays, he will be close to our highest paid player and ultimately squeeze our cap further when you consider who else we have on circa 800k/ season...

Another list management blunder imo given they gave Pitto 4 years extension in 2023...

What's funny... Cripps open field kicking and touch is now legit good. He's improved from awful to good and sometimes excellent. Mark of a champion that he keeps improving.... Shame the others aren't... :(

Smith & Elijah are not small forwards.

One is a pure mid, without breakout speed but great elusive skills, the other a mid/High half forward hybrid, not quick, who reads the play well.

Neither are the answer up forward.

I still think a forward line of Charlie, McKay, Kemp, Williams, Motlop, Fantasia, Fogarty can work.

Last week we coughed & spluttered - it hasn’t always been the case.
Neither are but both are miles and miles ahead of what we have.

If that was not the worst forward line I have ever seen Carlton roll out I will eat my hat.

Because he works on it with intention. How many others do?

Off the top of my head, rucks

Possibly cheap, Soldo and Bryan
Possibly cheap salary but would get bent over in a trade, Reeves
FA which I doubt we want to stuff our Compo, Draper
Possibly decent value salary wise, would cost a lot in a trade, Moyle

this is why I want to keep TDK even if he isn’t worth $1.1-1.2mil per year. I can’t see where his replacement is coming from. I’ll guarantee there is one out there but they are going to be bloody hard to find and require abit of luck.

At least we'll get pick 2 as compo... 😂
We will need it!

Why would he sign on with Voss as coach who is not fit to coach Keilor U15s.

🤦‍♀️💩

Although at times they bite off more than they should

Charlie, Newman, Boyd, Gov, Cerra, Weitering, Harry, maybe Williams

There’s no harm of course in winning the territory battle but it doesn’t equate to wins like it used to. Your second point about conversion is a good one but it’s also clearly linked to the quality of shots on goal a team can achieve. A slingshot fast break from half back often results in guys running into open goals or deep entries via the corridor. Hacking the ball forward from clearance as a shallow and wide inside 50 doesn’t create good scoring opportunities. The crux of it is that it’s more about quality of shots than quantity of shots and Thursday night against last years wooden spooners showed that.
Don't think that's right. The expected score stat factors in quality of shots and it had us ahead. Which is to say that as badly as we played, if both sides had converted their shots at the expected rate, we'd have won.

Massive call. I would absolutely be trading one of Charlie or Harry before TDK (I would have already traded one by now and still would (and I’d be considering that salary space in any contract offer to TDK/recruitment in other positions)). Cripps, TDK and Weiters are the only untouchables for mine.

The argument re star players in certain positions could be made for most positions outside of the midfield I reckon (ie, it takes something special to win a flag without a top notch midfield) … I am no fan of average ruckmen, but when you have a truly elite ruckman (which is where TDK is heading), I think it can be as much of a game-changer as any other position.
I'd favour trading Charlie ATM, Harry's best is less spectacular but is arguably the more reliable of the two.

Some players haven't come on as expected, others are aging, and we are replacing fringe payers with more fringe players. We need the capital to reinvigorate the list a bit.
