There will need to be some tough calls on midfielders on the list at seasons end. Jones will most likely be delisted, my thoughts on Clark are well known (he shouldnt be on our list and traded), Byrnes is a battler who is a good backup VFL player, I get the feeling from the way Lyon etc has spoken about Dow his long term future in the game is in jeopardy (hopefully I am wrong). Carroll and Windhager are the best options to have an impact this year.

The younger players all have potential but they are not of Ashcroft/s, Lalor or Reid class and all need time to develop. When Phillipou gets back on the park he will have lost the fitness he had in the preseason and struggle to return to the midfield. Wilson may get some minutes inside but he is mostly suited to a wing at present, Boxshall has already shown to be the real 'out of the box' draftee this season.

If we move on Jones, Clark and Dow retires at seasons end, we need to add proven genuine midfielders added to the list. I wonder if Elwood Peckett will be looked at for a MSD position or we will be looking for a state league tall defender.
IMO Wilson is as good as any young kid in the comp at the same age.

Agree but we are talking about clearance midfielders - he has a lot of development before he adds that to his game. Elite clearance midfielders are where the real gold is found.

No according to some (and backed up by the Media) its embarrassing that we are having a crack ...... we are a laughing stock and should be crawling back into our hole and shutting the fk up
The league don’t like us when we’re not sitting quietly and behaving the way they’d like.
Fk ‘em.
Keep chasing these players - at the very least we’ll be screwing with their salary cap…..well, except for the Cats I guess, as everyone bar the AFL honchos know that they don’t have one!

Hahahahaha another one to add to the list.
The whole basis of the article is that we won't get the brothers to the saints.
Even though there's no evidence that we were ever after SDK.*

It's amazing how many of our "supporters" delight in any suggestion of a club failure.

I don't know what psychological need this fills for some of you.

*Xander lol

Pathetic, isn’t it.
Geelong, who are clearly rorting the cap in any way imaginable, retain a player. Wow, how embarrassing for us.

Hate-wanking their little nubs is all they have.

So the plan as stated by the president is to start competing for a flag in the next 12 to 24 months or so. That clearly is almost entirely dependent on getting an LDU and TDK. But what happens if we are genuinely bad this year and the above doesn’t occur?

Players just don’t go to bad teams via free agency, it just doesn’t happen. I wish it did, that was the rationalisation for free agency by the players association but it was a load of shit. I wish the AFL had a culture more like the NFL and players went wherever the money was best cause they genuinely believed they can win anywhere. It would be a hell of a lot more interesting. Unfortunately the AFL is too dumb or spineless to realise this.

Read about the history of the NFL and particularly Pete Rosell who was the commissioner who presided over the league for 30 years and turned it from a second rung sport behind baseball to the juggernaut it is now and how strong he was on equalisation and any given Sunday as they say. There’s a reason it is so widely popular now. A strong and even league makes everyone stronger.

If we can’t get free agents to compete whilst Wilkie, Sinclair and Marshall are still very good with Tasmania coming in and the likelihood of not getting access to an elite talent this year I genuinely have no idea what we do. I think we may have missed the boat on trading any of the above for real value and they are too old to be enticing for the Devils.

I think we would need to start preparing a case to the AFL for concessions for this year. Not in extra picks but for us not to get pushed back down the draft order. Imagine sitting through a year where we finish 16th and then getting pushed back to a talent in the teens whilst the Suns and Lions get 4 picks in the top 6 between them. We can put up with a lot as Saints fans but that would be too much for me.

The team we put out on the weekend was as bad a team as we’ve had on the park at any point over the last 15 years of shite. It was seriously devoid of talent. I’m so sick of being a mile behind everyone for from a talent stand point. Injury played a part in that but to see us in this position after being so irrelevant for so long and to start a season with no hope. Feel as low as any point in my time as a fan. Earliest season I can remember is 1995.

Very worried the 4 pillars as they’ve dubbed themselves have backed themselves into a corner and won’t be able to change course and we’ll continue to see Jones over Boxshall and Cordy over Keeler for the rest of the season. Too much egg on their face.

The two biggest problems with free agency in the AFL compared to the NFL IMO are:

- There isn't enough money for it to be the single overriding factor in choosing a team, especially because of how spread out Australia is. It's not even about culture, its that if you sign a 30 million a year guraenteed deal, its so much easier to move yourself, buy a new place, get your family set up and not have to worry about money. No A grade Victorian free agent is going to choose Fremantle over Carlton because they are offering an extra 200k, because the logistics of moving to Freo and starting your life over are far more difficult, even on a very good salary that the top AFL players make. The best AFL player salary makes maybe half of the average NFL player.

- In the NFL, you get rewarded for performance with prime time exposure. And the divison schedule creates primetime games naturally. Besides the Thanksgiving game, there is no notion of yearly marquee games between the same sides regardless of performance.

It's an incredible competitive advantage that is just accepted in our league. If Collingwood are the worst team in the league for 5 straight years, they get Anzac Day no matter what. Richmond just finished 2nd last, they still open the season on Thursday night. That alone is a selling point that we can never hope to offer and if your choice is between Collingwood in 14th and Saint Kilda in 15th, we can't offer any advantage besides more money. Smaller clubs have to be in the perfect window to attract players and it can be done, but it's not sustainble because the league is setup to maximise profit over competitiveness by creating its unbalanced "fixture"

Self preservation probably comes into it. We keep throwing crazy money, and no one seems to want it. Being Ironic, sarcastic and paradoxical about it, is a coping mechanism as old as time itself.

In all seriousness, you’d have to think that if Harley Reid does become available at end of year we’d have a pretty stupid contract in front of him.
WC would need picks as well of course.

Every club will be asking about players the quality of SDK.

We are just the media's current go-to club to report about 'failures' because it gets others laughing to engage with their posts Annoying and frustrating to have them constantly feeding that narrative but I guess it means we arent irrelevant like many oppositions supporters like to throw around.

Agreed. It’s becoming a little embarrassing that no one has come on board but what’s the alternative- do nothing and be stuck where we are with Tassie about to compromise the draft even more?

We’ve just gotta keep at it and be aggressive - passive losers is not an option and I don’t want us to become the pathetic begging bowl Norf.

I just hope that when we land the big fish it’s a true talent that meets our needs and we just don’t chase someone because we are desperate for any signature just to offer the supporters hope.

The best way to get champions onto your list is to draft them, then you need to retain them.

Despite our President making noises about drafting more kids from the dragons where are they ?. Don’t get me wrong I love Nas and the Poo but retention was always going to be a problem. If we loved Callaghan enough to reportedly make him a massive offer why didn’t we do what was needed to move up and draft him ?. I know it takes a lot but it amazes me how other teams manage it but we can’t.

I like what our President is doing but I doubt it’s going to have some dramatic impact, the afl won’t capitulate. We might see some minor changes but we need to be doing more than imitating north who charged around for years offering huge money to marquee players and getting laughed at. Then they went dad’s army, then blew the place up and got the begging bowl out.

Richmond on the other hand fresh off 3 flags took a look at their list, saw an opportunity to move some players on for a very good return and took the risk. We’re not getting handouts, we’re not getting into contention 1 first round pick at a time. There’s quite a few players on afl lists who are the sons of former players yet somehow we never seem to get them. How on earth did Simon O’Donnell’s son wind up at the bulldogs. Why didn’t we move heaven and earth to get Anderson ?.

Both played for st Kilda and were board members, seriously if that’s not enough of an inside run then what is. I get so frustrated hearing how we’re doing everything we can blah blah. No we’re not, we need to be but we’re obviously not, would I be draft tampering, you bet I would.

You have to be a dumbass to get caught, run track, play cricket whatever but stay off a football field. Can’t get a scholarship to your school of choice without playing football, don’t worry uncle X will fix that and so on. Yes you need to commit to kids a fair way out but seriously so what if you tie up half a dozen list spots backing yourself in. We do that anyway and use good picks on them, Allison springs to mind and we even gave him a nice extension.

Off field we need to grow the membership and get eyes on our games on TV. We really need to sell the us against them theme, hate the pies, blues and northern clubs etc then buy a saints membership to stick it to them and the afl. You’d can’t be too proud to sell yourself as everyone’s second team. To do that you need to actually have some colour in the playing group and play an attractive style. We have all the personality of a bottle of milk and play a boring defensive game. There’s some serious growth slated for Cheltenham and Moorabbin but unless we start winning and putting on a show they’ll all be watching hok ball or whatever dog and pony show they have by then. When you start winning a lot of those second club members actually get on board, everyone loves a bandwagon.

We’re playing by a set of rules designed to screw us, wake up and go rogue, whatever it takes should be the new internal mantra. If I was Basset I’d be telling the afl if you don’t find a way to throw us a bone, better deal at marvel, more mcg games, better schedule, marquee game whatever. We’re not going quietly into the night Ill legal up and blow the whole place down. Love to commission a couple of journos to write an exposee, something like whatever happened to Olympic boulevard. Collingwood were flat broke and playing at Victoria park, next minute swimming gone, athletics gone, Collingwood with the best location and facilities in the afl and playing 18 games at the MCG.

Not sure why you are or others are so defensive about this.

Evidently we did want him.

We missed out. I don’t find shame or frustration when plays remain at their clubs.

We didn’t miss out. He stayed where he was.

Different if we can’t land the bloke who leaves his club with stupid money on the table and I’ve yet to see that example.

The media aren't helping, they are keen to make us look desperate and highlight no one wanting to come to the club. You cant tell me we are the only club to put an offer in front of these uncontracted players, but the media has an agenda as we are the only club ever mentioned.

As mentioned it shouldnt prevent us from being bold and continue to ask the questions.

Hawthorn's attempts at signing players from other clubs is part of their inevitable rise to the premiership.

Geelong's attempts at signing players is proof of how attractive they are.

St Kilda's attempts at signing players is proof of their desperation.

Agreed. But lets not go home with the girl we pickup at 3am though please

Two of those three aren't losing games. Two of those three have been in the top eight on a regular basis.

We aren't the first club to discover being shithouse means you don't attract talent and sure as he'll won't be the last.

You're selling this club. What are they getting for thier big bag of money?
Finishing 10th while playing infront of 6 people at Marvel.

The only fix is to sort our shit out. Win games and playing finals will attract players.
