It was this board that levelled Curtin a KPD

I agree Curtin had limited impact, but there were glimpses of some outstanding plays & his footy IQ

That WB game was great viewing if you want to see the upside of Curtin

Not 100% sure on this, but didnt Curtin play across all 3 areas as a junior? He played forward, back and midfield according to rookie me central - which lists him as a KPD who moves like a midfielder.

His size certainly suggests KPP.

I only booked Bullies vs Lions at 7pm tonight and no issues (and no delays!)
I got tickets to this game this morning.
It said 'General Admission allocation exhausted', but when I clicked through the tickets were there and I nabbed 2.
Also got tickets to Coll V Syd on the Friday night.

So I will be going Thursday night, Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Sounds like a good weekend to me!

That's revisionism to the extreme. Curtin was tagged as a KPD because that was where he made his name in the draft year. The midfield and forward part was noted as having some versatility, but first and foremost, Curtin was seen as a CHB and intercept defender at AFL level.

Heck, Curtin was seen as the best KPD prospect in the draft, see:

The only reason we're not talking about Curtin as a defender in 2025 is that he got injured, and Keane ran with it. Otherwise, Dan probably plays 22 games as a third tall and comes in top three in R/S due to being extremely talented and it being an easy position to do well in.

That's a stretch even by your standards, WW.

During his draft year, he was viewed as a KPD who had the capacity/versatility to move into the midfield. The AFC said as much when they recruited him. There were plenty on here who were concerned when they heard that AFC interview, because they viewed him entirely as a big-bodied midfield star of the future, and were concerned that we would try to use him as a defender instead.

The club then, indeed, initially placed him in a KPD role at both SANFL and AFL level.

Laying that on this board is just not accurate.

Which they did. And failed abysmally.

Versatile draft prospect who models game on Dockers champion

Daniel Curtin grew up playing in the midfield but a growth spurt saw him transformed into an exciting utility

FIRST-ROUND draft prospect Daniel Curtin is looking to Fremantle legend Matthew Pavlich for inspiration as he prepares to begin his eagerly-anticipated AFL career.

Curtin grew up playing as a midfielder but has transformed into an exciting utility courtesy of a growth spurt that boosted his height to a key-position 195cm.

Pavlich, who stood at 192cm, was a six-time All-Australian, dominating as a full-back, goal-kicking midfielder and damaging key forward at different stages across a decorated career.
"I really like having that flexibility to be able to go to a few different positions," Curtin told Continental Tyres AFL Trade Radio.

"Junior footy, I played a lot of midfield, but had a bit of a growth spurt around year 11 and turned into more of a key position.

"I'm really happy to fit in anywhere (at AFL level). A lot of people at the moment probably view me as a key back, but I'm definitely keen to explore the midfield options in the near future."

Curtin call: WA prospect's 'rare' versatility a major weapon

Daniel Curtin was named as a defender in the All-Australian team, but impressed when he moved into the midfield during the national under-18 championships

TOP WA Draft prospect Daniel Curtin has the attributes to grow as an elite AFL midfielder if he is snared by a club that wants to develop the versatile tall in that role, according to state talent manager Adam Jones.

Curtin, who is viewed as a top five prospect at this year's AFL Draft and could land as high as No.2, was Western Australia's standout player at the national under-18 championships playing back, midfield and briefly forward.

He was named at centre half-back in the All-Australian team but impressed recruiters when moved on-ball for periods in matches against South Australia, Vic Country and Vic Metro.
"His composure as a big bloke on-ball, his ability to side-step players, and that big body around the contest, you could see that translating to the next level as a midfielder no doubt," Jones told AFL.com.au.

"His skill level is exceptionally high as well and he has the athletic capabilities. He's a really good runner for his size, so if he's going to play midfield he's going to need that.

"His stoppage craft was very, very good for a player who hadn't played a lot in that role and with his ability to learn how to spread and be a two-way elite runner, I see some really good growth there." Jones consulted with AFL recruiters before moving Curtin into the midfield during the national championships, knowing that the state program's objective was to help players get drafted and key defence had been the 18-year-old's best position up to that point.
Recruiters were keen to see him in the role and were subsequently impressed when he racked up 26 disposals and six clearances against South Australia.

Against Vic Country, he had brief forays in the midfield, was influential in defence, and pushed forward late to snap an impressive set shot from the boundary. Jones does not think he has seen a more versatile player come through the WA program in terms of an ability to "play midfield exceptionally well and key defence".

Looks like Harry Boyd isn't going to be an option even if we put Strachan on the LTI.

Norwood SANFL star Harry Boyd on cusp of signing AFL deal with St Kilda

St Kilda is close to signing one of the SANFL’s premier players as it looks to bolster its ruck stocks and provide more support for No.1 ruckman Rowan Marshall.
Magarey Medal winner Harry Boyd is on the cusp of earning an AFL deal with St Kilda.
Reports emerged on Wednesday that Boyd, the SANFL’s premier ruckman, was close to earning a fairytale AFL opportunity at the age of 26.

The Herald Sun reported last month that the Saints were circling Boyd, who averaged 21 disposals, 10 clearances, four tackles and 41 hit-outs in 18 matches this year.

St Kilda delisted Tom Campbell and drafted South Australian prospect Alex Dodson, but has been keen to add an experienced tall to provide ruck support for Rowan Marshall.

More so the media than this board who were mainly talking up his versatility , more half back than key back

In fact most of draft watchers in here were talking up his versatility and his game against vic metro at Moorabbin in midfield…. But yeah a half back ( not key back ) with opportunity to push into midfield

Now after a year watching him play mens footy I’d say he’s a half forward with opportunity to push up to wing / inside mid

This what was said in August 2023

‘He’d be like having a second Dawson

Half back and mid and he’s 195cm

Similar skill and composure ‘

Ok, but using him to gauge trajectory is a bit flawed given his pathway into the league. And I'm not sure that he was pegged as a stoppage mid from the get go. Either way, it's very difficult to find a perfect comparison to measure Curtin's development against. There's a lot of factors involved and variations with the relevant factors of the players mentioned so far. But he averaged 11 disposals largely forwardish when not sub, so that's a pretty promising start off not an ideal preseason in terms of a bit of injury.

One thing I disagree with though, is that his development curve should match the rucks/KPPs because 'talls take time'. He moves like a kid that's ready to go, at least in terms of playing a high forward/mid/wing style role. He's no gangly kid that needs to grow into his body.

Was it? Pretty sure the club had a go at it first and, on average, the board was quick to criticise it. There's a lot more posters saying he's no KPD than there are posts saying he is. But then, you're pretty good at getting your view of the general consensus 100% back to front.
