Training 2025 Pre-Season

Draper, this year’s South Australian under-18 captain, and father-son draftee Tyler Welsh are living with Crows skipper Jordan Dawson and his wife Millie for the first month of pre-season.

It is a little unusual for SA recruits to live with other players but looms as a valuable learning experience for the two youngsters given Dawson’s leadership and professionalism as a reigning two-time best-and-fairest.

Ex-GWS Isaac Cumming came off with a hamstring complaint and did not finish the session.

He was set to be assessed.
Fellow recruit Peatling had to have his knee tended to by a club physio after landing awkwardly at Richmond Oval on Wednesday then staying down on the turf for a short time.

He bounced up, jogged it off then returned to training fine, later explaining he stepped in a pothole.

The Crows managed plenty of players through the session, a week before training wrapped up for the year.

And some good news..

PLAYERS WHO CAUGHT THE EYE

Tyler Welsh – The 18-year-old’s agility and turning circles are impressive for a bigger-bodied forward. Although Adelaide did not have a proper match simulation, it had full-oval drills and a couple of times Welsh’s ability to gather the ball at pace then create space for himself was noticeable.

Sid Draper – Draper and Welsh are not taking part in all drills, being eased in, but when the explosive midfielder is out there, he seems to be everywhere, such is his ground coverage and workrate.

Max Michalanney – One of the Crows players who appears noticeably stronger is third-year defender Michalanney. He was listed at 78kg when he was drafted in 2022 and played on both talls and smalls during his first two seasons. Coming off a fourth-placed best-and-fairest finish last campaign, Michalanney looked have added more muscle and seemed even better equipped to take on bigger forwards.

Forwards Taylor Walker, Darcy Fogarty and Thilthorpe, midfielder Jake Soligo and defenders Oscar Ryan and Luke Nankervis were all either not training or on light duties with very minor ailments.

Half-back Wayne Milera, who played just three games last season before rupturing his patella tendon, was in and out of drills after not training on Monday.

He appeared to be ahead of schedule in his return to footy.

Key defender Jordon Butts is ramping up his return to training after mid-season foot surgery.

I am so offended.

3. He was so bad as a defender that BF and the club have shelved that idea.
Nathan Bock was almost universally caned on this board too.

Curtin is very young and there’s plenty of time for him to develop. He could end up as a key back, why would we put a line through that so early in his career? It isn’t a need for us now but let’s not be pigeon holing the lad.

If my memory serves me well Bock was recruited from WWT as a Key Forward and ended up an AA quality key back?

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make?

The club made it clear from the start that they viewed him as a defender initially, who might "graduate" into the midfield at some stage.

If they were going to play him as a defender, I didn't think then (and still don't) that he should be playing as a KPD. Third tall is the only option left.

My preferred option was for him to play midfield, but the club was clear that's not how they viewed him at that stage.

As opposed to swamping the board with your incessant dross?
Life is interesting these days .....where debate on opinions should flourish on a social forum, critical thinking encouraged to stop, as adelaidecrows has said, the board becoming too hum-drum and lovey dovey with everyone agreeing .....we still have people who cannot accept opinions that differ from their own, probably due to the lack of an ability to debate issues

So in the absence of debate or ability to articulate .....we get this playing the man, which adds absolutely nothing to any forum discussion

I am digging into the past - but I swear there was a time where Hentschel was our next CHB and Bock was set to be our CHF.

Then they swapped positions and Bock was extremely good at CHB and then Hentschel had a car crash knee which ruined everything.

Cumming injury is so bloody frustrating.
Pedlar soft tissue too.
Trend?
Cumming has a history of soft tissue injuries especially hammies at the GWS before joining us and so did Pedlar with various injury issues though shoulder was his biggie.

Was it just last year with Cumming? He seems to have played a lot the previous few seasons.
Had a stint in the middle of 2023 and most of this year. Apart from that hardly any injuries, don't know where this 'he's injury prone' business came from, probably Rowey

The last 2 years he's had soft tissue injury issues calf and hamstring injuries

7 weeks with the calf in 2023 and calf and hamstring issues this year that saw him play only 6 games and subbed off in one of them early in the game.

Defender Isaac Cumming will be sidelined until the mid-season bye with a calf injury sustained last week.

“It’s frustrating for Isaac, who has a brilliant start to the season,” Rahme said.

“We know he’ll attack his rehab with his usual hard work and diligence so we look forward to him returning to the field in a month or so.”

What examples of 197cm+ players other than Nash/Curtin aren't towards being a KPP or Ruck?

That’s my point, thanks for reinforcing it. He’s a rare beast, the players that ended up being mids at that height are Bont and Nash. Defaulting to progression rates of KPPs and rucks seem a little simplistic, given that’s not the type of player he looks like becoming. He already moves well and is strong enough to compete physically with oppo mids. If you’re expecting to have to wait a couple of years for him to look good in the role, you’re going to be disappointed.

Hopefully not the tendon which he split twice last season

In what way?

Jordan Dawson was a late draft pick who was 189cm and 84kg and was a medium forward. Curtin was pick 8 at 197cm and 95kg and played in all 3 areas as a junior.
If you track Dawson’s career in terms of different roles he’s filled , I think we will see a similar thing with Curtin as he evolves ie he will play in all 3 zones at different times

I even think their game styles are quite similar , composure and ball use especially

Yeah agree with this

He might play alot of roles first then end up a key defender when he’s older

Great move to have Tyler Welsh living with Dawson and to develop professional habits early in his career

Hopefully Cumming’s hammy is precautionary, and even if it’s a slight hammy he wasn’t miss too much pre-season with the break around the corner

Burgess needs to get on top of Cummings recent soft tissue injuries

I think that with any draftee, it depends on what weapons they bring.

If they have relied upon outside speed and no contests, then almost all of that will translate to AFL almost immediately.

But if their weapon is size/strength, then there is no way that they will compete with adult bodies until they have an adult body. That's 4 to 5 years in.

Curtin is maybe somewhere in between. His key weapons are his size and poise under pressure. Both of these need time to be effective against mature bodies. They will take a few years.

But his outside game is pretty good as well (just not as good as his inside game will be). So, that probably translates into AFL next year.

So, if you think of Curtin as a 183cm half forward, he's ready to deliver next year. You should be disappointed if he's not delivering 10 to 15 disposals and a goal a game next year, with no midfield minutes.

If you want more, you need to wait.

Happy to hear of a player relying on size and strength as weapons (with no outside game) that has delivered in year 2.

Must say was surprised that Cumming wasn’t on some sort of modified program given he split hamstring tendon twice last season
