Absolutely.

First Quarter - won 9 lost 14.
Second Quarter - won 12 lost 10 drew 1.
Third Quarter - won 8 lost 15
Fourth Quarter - Won 13 lost 9

Seems to me our best quarters were the 2nd and 4th. Seems to me thats when fitness kicks in. Looks like we are out coached by the other side after long breaks.

Fitness was not an issue or a reason we missed the finals in 2023 or 2024.
I definitely think the last quarter uplift was because of the other team dropping off in intensity as the game was theirs already.

2nd quarter, my explanation is the coaching staff doing a bit of "WTF WAS THAT, SORT YOUR SHIT OUT" at quarter time.

There is no way that explains our last quarter success in 2024. There were only 4 games in 2024 where the game was effectively over at 3/4 time.

The Kangas/WCE games where we won all 4 quarters.

Hawks Rd 20 - Down 42 at 3/4 time. We lost the 4th Qtr.
Swans Rd 24 - Down 49 at 3/4 time. We won the 4th qtr.

Those are the only 4 games that were effectively over at 3/4 time. ALL of our other games we were in it at 3/4 time.

Our biggest deficits at 3/4 time were the following. Suns (29), Geelong (24), Melbourne (28) points, Hawks (21), Tigers (22), Brisbane (20).

There is absolutely zero chance any of those teams considered the game theirs already at 3/4 time. Its a bullshit premise that is just wrong.

It's well known teams get a lead, then cruise after, enough to keep the game in their control.

We didn't come back because of better fitness, but rather the other team went into cruise mode.
.
We need to turn this around & take control of games & be the team crusing to victory.

Nobody in modern AFL footy is cruising at 3/4 time up by less than 5 goals. Crazy talk.

Good teams get comfortable leads & do enough to keep them.

If you can't see this, I really can't help you.

Was almost like we had more run and energy than them.
Yet not enough...

What was our winning strike rate after being behind at 3 quarter time (or even quarter time for that matter)...

Very low.

Unofficial Fun Facts

We were down in 14 games at 3/4 time in 2024 and won 1 (Dons at the Dome, down by 10pts at 3/4 time).

A winning strike rate of 7% :drunk:

More to do with coaching and being shit than fitness.

The fact that we only had 4 out of 23 games effectively over (with a team putting taking it easy at 3/4 time) and our best performing quarter was the 4th quarter shows that we didn't have a fitness problem in 2024.

And we were leading at 3/4 time 7 times in 2024 and only lost 1. That one game was with a 3 point lead against Geelong at the Cattery.

That would suggest to anyone with a brain that fitness wasn't our issue in 2024.

During 2023, we could absolutely get on a roll and kick multiple goals quickly, but opposition teams were doing the same to us.

I think one of our key issues was that opposition teams were simply better at controlling the game at the end of games than we were.

Your facts are WRONG. Please try and be careful when posting statistics and passing it off on here as correct.

At 3/4 time in 2024, the AFC led 8 times for 6 wins, we lost 1 and drew 1.

Classic McHenry. Argue semantics, but not the point.

Thank you for wonderful correction, which further proves my point. 8 times we led at 3/4 time and we lost only 1 of those.

Love to hear your thoughts on how that losing once in the 8 games we were up at 3/4 meant our fitness cost us games.

i don't even know how we got onto 2024 since the original debate was on 2020

Well its Big Footy. You start with one statement and then arguments get brought up and changed and convoluted.

My conversation was responding to the comment that we should be embarrassed as a club because Draper looked so good in December. I said that our fitness was fine. Then some brilliant minds suggested I was wrong because the only reason we did so well in 4th quarters was because the other teams gave up and stopped playing footy (despite only 4 of our 23 games having a lead more than 5 goals at 3/4). Then the troll came in.

There’s nothing wrong with our fitness, but nor is it a competitive advantage. I haven’t looked at stats, but off the top of my head, when chasing a margin, we’d come out hot and wear the lead down and get close and then our opponent would hold us at bay. If we had a fitness advantage we’d outscore at a higher rate the more game time that had elapsed. Pretty sure that’s not how most final quarters went down.
