So this is my thinking. I am thinking this could be an all encompassing 21st century mock draft. This is we line up every player drafted in the 21st century as an 18 year old, knowing the players they became and we decide who goes where.

For the draft order I am thinking the current ladder

So

Pick 1 - North Melbourne
Pick 2 - Richmond
Pick 3 - West Coast
Pick 4 - Adelaide
Pick 5 - St Kilda
Pick 6 - Brisbane
Pick 7 - Hawthorn
Pick 8 - Western Bulldogs
Pick 9 - Melbourne
Pick 10 - Gold Coast
Pick 11 - GWS
Pick 12 - Fremantle
Pick 13 - Collingwood
Pick 14 - Geelong
Pick 15 - Port Adelaide
Pick 16 - Essendon
Pick 17 - Carlton
Pick 18 - Sydney

and so on for 3 rounds.

The rules are to treat this like an actual mock draft, so pick the player who is either best available or best suits your list.

So my general idea is people will nominate a club they want to pick for, and hopefully we get enough people who want to participate so we don't have any double ups. I hope to go for 3 rounds but we will see how it goes.

Now the rule here is that you are only able to pick players who were drafted in the 2000 draft or later, I know technically 2000 is not the 21st century but these players would have only started playing in 2001 which is the 21st century. I have also made some lists of players who have won the All Australian at least 3 times, but also included some other awards too, but by no means do you only need to select from the list.

You are also free to nominate someone who has been retired for 5 years, or if you feel really confident, happy to include a player who is only in their second year, if you believe they have enough talent to be ahead of more established players. For instance it would not surprise me if Nick Daicos or Harley Reid end up in the first or second rounds despite having very little experience compared to a lot of players on this list.

So here we go

He was my 3rd round, possibly 4th but knew would never make it that far down.

I have to say I'm shocked at all of the rucks that have already been taken.

Cox and Gawn are understandable as generational talents that also essentially give you an extra prolific midfielder. The rest, I think you can find value via trade/free agency/later picks.

The great Brisbane, Geelong, Hawthorn and Richmond sides this century overall had some decent but not world beater ruckmen. How many AAs between them as ruckmen?

NicNat was a very good player, but Richmond have Nank for a few years yet and could do with elite wing/mids and forward/mids primarily.
My thoughts were that there are a truckload of gun mids, including some Brownlow Medallists, still available and a few of them may still be around next round. NicNat and Ablett starting their careers together at the same club at the same time is an exciting prospect and NicNat will be ready to take on the number one ruck role when Nank is cooked

Yeah that makes sense. Don't get me wrong, they'd be a deadly combo! And the midfield depth is strong. There will be some very good mids taken in the 4th round, especially if everyone is of the same thinking in the 3rd and ignoring them!

I'm so happy we can take players from the club we support now. I genuinely believe this guy is supremely underrated as a key defender, and I didn't think he'd last this long.

Pick 40: Michael Hurley.

Butts, Keane and Murray are solid citizens but possess limited attacking prowess so upgrading one of them to a star key defender and allowing the likes of Michaelanny and Worrell to be more attacking is exactly what's needed here.

Mr Meow

Enright just misses out on eligibility for this one unfortunately.
Bartel I would take before a few players already picked.. but still heaps of gun players available.

Ahh yes 1999.

The Geelong drafter picking Zach Merrett over Jimmy. Hand in your membership and scarf son. See youself out.

I somewhat agree, but maybe they were deliberately avoiding drafting Geelong players? I skipped out on Riewoldt for St Kilda as I just thought it would take the fun out of it, simply re-doing their best draft pick ever. And then skipped on Hawkins for St Kilda as that would've been me simply adding two Geelong players to their team with the first two draft picks. So there is an element of not being predictable on fronts like that.

Still - Jimmeh!

Fair, the mix and match element makes the exercise a bit more fun.

But if you wanna WIN then JIMMEH!

Great pick. When I was looking through the AA teams, Hurley's name came up a couple of times and he may have made the squad of 44 others. Also a good swingman, so for St Kilda I wouldn't have minded him partnering either King up forward or Wilkie/Battle in defence. He was someone I was considering, but maybe hoping would slip to round 4.

With Pick 41, St Kilda select Toby Greene.

We are ecstatic that Greene has fallen this far. He is a match winning superstar, who proved a capable midfielder early before transitioning to a dynamite forward who plays taller than his size. The positional flexibility as a fwd/mid is something we are after - Greene and Owens will be our Chapman/SJ for years to come and get the best out of King.

And yes I had Bartel on the table, but am trying not to simply flood St Kilda's team with Geelong players as a GFC supporter.

St Kilda would also like to express deep gratitude to RUNVS for gifting them Christian Petracca (was this a Priority Pick I was unaware of...for being St Kilda?).

Petracca joining Dangerfield and Swan will set up our midfield for the next decade. Condolences to Guardian Hawk and Hawthorn.

eth-dog back to you and Brisbane, dawg.

There were two I really liked for this pick. I wanted to get a medium defender who rebounded well. In the end this guy was a multiple premiership winner who was a little underrated due to how many guns he was surrounded by.

Pick 42: Andrew Mackie

Excellent choice. And during the early days of Geelong's premiership era, either Mackie or Enright would often play as a run and gun wingman ala Holmes/Dempsey today. But more reliable ball users/decision makers (of course the latter two have time). So you could easily have Mackie up with McLuggage or gun slinging with Kiddie Coleman across half back.

He loved a 50m goal on the run too, did Mack.

I'm happy to have a back 7 consisting of Andrews and Taylor on the talls, Starcevich and Mackie as mediums, then McKenna, Coleman and Wilmot as running smalls.

A winger was under consideration though.

Hawthorn's biggest list deficiency needs to be addressed and I gambled on enough quality ones still being available in the 3rd round, so with Pick 43, Hawthorn select...

Harris Andrews

Pick 44 Bulldogs - Eddie Betts
Best small forward of the 21st century with 640 goals to his name.
Imagine a young Eddie Betts coming into a forward line with Naughton, Ugle-Hagan, Weightman and Sam Darcy as a combo for the next 10 years 😍 not to mention a young Bont to start his career forward

MarcMaverick
I was very close to picking Eddie. Great choice!!

I ended up going Cyril as a wanted someone who could have bursts in the midfield.

Also big game player.

Really couldn't go wrong with either 😆

The Bulldogs forward line is sexy af

Also just realised but how the hell is Sam Taylor still on the board? Absolute gun.

I Was going to pivk him next

Because there's some absolute greats already picked and we are barely 35 picks in?

Is Taylor in the best 35 players of the last 25 years? No way imo.

Great young player but the likes of Rance, Taylor, McGovern, Stewart are well ahead of him before even getting to forwards, mids etc.

I'm not sure what others opinions are, but I'm happy to do 20+ rounds tbh if people are willing.
