I was questioning whether Weitering would make the team, but looking at the list of defenders, really only 3 Key defenders to choose from...

My team was:

Laird - Lever - Williams
Mills - Weitering - Docherty
Bont - Grundy - Cripps
Whitfield - Coniglio - Kelly
Petracca - Hogan - Stringer
Moore - Wright - Heeney

Bench: KK, Macrae, Wines, Membrey

Felt a bit dirty leaving out Merrett but big fan of the GWS trio.

Chose Wright over Daniher purely because of ruck work.

Awesome list of players...!
I was wondering how you could possibly leave Viney out of the final 22.

Then I remembered the game he played against your mob on the weekend. Understandable if that's your sample.

FULL 22UNDER22 SQUAD

St Kilda (3): Luke Dunstan, Tim Membrey, Jack Billings.
  • St Kilda. 3 players from a 'rebuild' team is a bit poor.
Personally, I like rebuilding the team without the media hype. We had all the attention 02-04 and many thought we were miles ahead of Geelong who were rebuilding at the same time. Happy to just focus on having an even (if unspectacular) rebuild this time and see where that gets us!

However, I do find our selections a little puzzling.

Membery is a lock, and Dunstan makes the squad but not the final team.

However, (based on 2016) Blake Acres and Jade Gresham are ahead of Billings on exposed form (who did have 25 touches, five tackles and a goal last week playing seniors).

After watching us every week this year, it is in: Acres / Gresham - out: Billings

Shame Newnes and Ross just miss the age cutoff by a few months. They have made great progress for us this year (as Bruce and Weller did last year at the same age).

Sadly, Goddard and McCartin have been injured for big chunks of the year so not in the conversation. I know talls can take longer, but fingers crossed they are in the mix this time next year

Dont see Sicily in any lists, is this because it's his 1st full year in the seniors so some more household names are getting the nod.

Had a quick look at the players and he seems one of the most suitable players for the fwd pocket. I guess it might come down to structure 3rd tall vs resting ruck.

Or is Stringer getting the nod over him. (i have both)

Sicily: 28 goals
Stringer: 37 goals
Membrey: 42 goals

Given all 3 are similar 3rd tall types who (this year at least) don't contribute much in terms of high possessions and defensive efforts I'd say the goals are a fair indication of who's been better and I'd have Membrey and Stringer a fair way ahead of Sicily.

He's behind all of Stringer, Fantasia and Heeney

I am a big fan of Viney - I chose Wines over him. Can't really give you an answer as to why!

Tried to have a mix of inside/outside. I am missing Viney and Merrett in my team, but you could substitute them with Macrae/Whitfield/Wines quite easily.

I think you're letting most recent form (where those two have been excellent) affect your judgement there. Initially Gresh was out of his depth at AFL level and Blake has been dropped twice for poor performances (and another time after a 22 disposal, 1 goal game, which was silly), while Jack had most of his very best performances really early in the year, so it's easier to forget them.

Blake has had 5 games (out of 15) where he's had less disposals than Billings' lowest disposal game for the year and Gresh has had 4 games of less. I think because we expect more from Jack we just take for granted his average games, which we would consider good games if they were played by the other two- Jade in particular, because he's younger and brand new.

Where is Dunstan rated internally? I was big on him in his first year but I don't really see him going anywhere - seems too slow and not dangerous enough with ball in hand, or good enough in the contested space at AFL level.

I am probably being harsh, but I was big on him in his first year thought he was a jet.

No disrespect to Andrews at all, but having him in there over Aliir is a headscratcher.
That really is a poor call, Andrews is ranked 11th best key defender in the competition by afl player ratings and is 5th in the league for One Percenters. his past month especially has been elite where he has been ranked the 28th best player in the entire competition over the past 4 games by afl player ratings.

Wines or Viney?

Tough one to split
Wines has hit some form towards the end of the year. At around the halfway point of the season Viney was sitting top five in the coaches votes.

Based on the year as a whole, I think Viney is still in the discussion for the AA squad of 40. I doubt the same can be said of Wines but I haven't watched his every game.

I'd have both ahead of Macrae. He's an accumulator but I've head Dogs fans themselves describe him as not very damaging.

Rated very highly as we gave him number 7 from lenny, and Richo loves him.

Stats wise people will say that he has had a bad year but watching closely he is one of our best contested players and his defensive work is top notch as well as his handballing this season. Sydney midfielders had a field day when he was not in our team.

Yeah probably not the best sample to go on, and as much as he's a bull he's a smaller dude who had to contend with a KPP sized bull running rampant in Cripps while not getting much support from his teammates.

He's been fantastic otherwise though and definitely deserves a spot IMO. I'd go him over Wines.

He started terrifically in his first year, but then injured his shoulder pretty badly about half way through the year and bravely played on through the pain for several weeks (where his output generally diminished), before going in for a reco after round 19 (yet still came 5th in the Rising Star), which would have severely affected his following preseason. He then really struggled for most of last year after that and it was later reported that he had a lot of issues with the reconstructed shoulder throughout that season. His confidence took a big hit (you could see it in his body language and his kicking really dropped off) and he wasn't spending anywhere near as much time as I would have otherwise expected in the guts, which is by far his best position (presumably to protect his shoulder).

Took a while to get going this year, but then while he wasn't posting big numbers, he started to play really solidly and consistently in his last 4 or 5 games (with a very strong % of contested ball), before he dislocated his other shoulder, which was really cruel luck for him. Had that not happened he was looking like finishing the year off really solidly and going into his 4th preseason with good confidence and momentum and and I would have been really confident that he'd step it up another notch or two next year, but now he's had another reco and that will set him back again, depending on how well he recovers from that.

I suspect that the reduction in interchange rotations has also not done him any favours, as in 11 of his 17 completed games this year he spent either low 70's, or 60-odd percent of the game on the ground, so I'd say his tank isn't as good yet as we'd ideally need it to be. They are the sort of numbers you'd expect from a "first year mid", so I think the more preseasons he gets under his belt the better.

I still have very high hopes for him if he gets on top of his shoulder issues and doesn't have his career derailed by any other similar type issues and is able to get his TOG % average up to at least 80.

I would be interested to see how an under 23's team would go against an over 32's team.
