You appear to be basing that on the assumption that afl compensation rules have a skerrick of logic in them. Let me put your mind at rest about that, they don't. After the Franklin and Frawley farces where the compo picks were respectively too little and too much the afl will be loath to give any pick that is higher than start of second round, whatever contract is offered them.

That was to do with ladder position. Both were band one compos. As I said, older players got paid less than what it would take to get pittard and got 2nd round or higher.

It's a bit early to be discussing the 2017 trade/draft period in my opinion, but seeing malcolm has gone to the trouble of putting up the thread I will comment.

1. I doubt any club will do a trade for the Rock Lobster, that bird has unfortunately flown, he is now a break glass in an emergency only player.

2. For the draft, my first choice would be for the best 196 plus cm kpp available.
My 2nd choice would be for an outside finisher/goal kicking wingman /half forward type.

Sam Walsh I am hoping to be a second round pick but that's maybe just wishful thinking. He is a bottom ager though.

Vic Country midfielder Sam Walsh was adjudged best on ground for the AFL Academy, with a stellar performance in the midfield finding plenty of the ball. The Geelong Falcon was announced as the Cameron Ling Medal for 2017.

Lobbe is worth offering to someone like Melbourne. They would want him this week. We just wear a reasonable portion of his salary. Can we do that?

We can revisit that in 2018!

We sure can. It might even help us have more of our salary cap spend playing AFL than being overpriced SANFL depth.

The only real area we're short on is KPDs and that's only cause Hombsch can't seem to stay fit. We should probably try and get maximum value out of our dead wood ie Neade, Lobbe, Ah Chee to improve the quality of our list but honestly I don't see us doing much this trade period.

With Marshall and Frampton coming on as forwards; Howard as CHB, Austin as FB?

Pittard, 2016 AA squad member would surely be end of first round, especially if he's offered 500K+ which is what it would take to have him leave.

That's being said why would he want to go, noone else does let alone a club favourite.

Lobbe would get picked up by someone, probably have to cover some of his wage. Maybe the same with Hartlett.

Seems like we may lose Ah Chee, Palmer, Monfries, Krak, White and Hewett at the end of the year. Whitey and/or Gus might be moved to the rookie list in a Tommy Logan style role. Obviously early days and plenty of time for these boys to lift and I hope they do. Need to see more from Snelling and Frampton but you would imagine both are safe. So I foresee us losing that wing/HFF depth and we could always use more KPP depth.

2 things I can say for sure at this stage is we need to trade Lobbe and Neade + Use our first pick on a KPD. It's fine if he's raw becuase we got Doogie and Austin coming through. Then it gives Lienert the chance next season to get freed up on a back flank/wing so we can see what he can really do.

Delist - Toumpas. If he doesn't play afl games this year delist. Just may not be an afl footballer. Doesn't appear to be a payoff around the corner

Retire - Monfries , white

I think age will catch up with them. Especially white with his injury history.

Trade block - lobbe , Hartlett , Neade , young , ah chee (my preference is to keep ahchee as I think he has a high payoff if he did come good)

Lobbe - we have young developing rucks we need to play in th ressies. Can't see us getting more than a token pick for him now unless he has a very good back end of year.

Hartlett- has so much talent , I'm all for keeping him if we use him properly. Is either a centre square mid or hff. Don't like him defending , he doesn't spread and gut run as hard as you need defenders to nowadays. If he was getting paid like a mid range player I might be happy but is in the top ten paid players at the club he needs to play like one. I would only let him go for a top 15 pick otherwise I would hold onto him.

Neade - I'm so not a fan. I think many players , Amon , impey , young have already gone past him and are worth so much more to the side. I have zero time for a guy who doesn't win the footy in contests , doesn't win lots in spreading outside , is a marking liability , disposes poorly in f50, and doesn't kick goals.

Having said all that people and teams seem to still like those nippy fast small forwards and someone will pay for him if we put him out there. I would take anything under pick 50 but I think a pick around 30-40 is quite possible especially if we package a pick 45-55 with it. This is a trade I would seek out this off season.

Young - I would float young for a trade. If we don't get a good offer I would hold onto him unless he asks to leave. Unfortunately talk is this draft isn't that strong so I definitely wouldn't take less than a pick 30 for young and I think teams would be looking at off loading a pick around 28-40.

Ah chee - I'm a fan of ah chee. I just think he is one of those guys who has a high payoff. I would keep him and develop him, but either he might request a trade or we might look to move him. If it's the latter it might be for a nothing pick or pick 45-65 but if he establishes himself somewhat and shows some more signs in the afl late this year I think a few teams will be keen to throw some picks at us in a shallow draft.

Trade targets

Brodie Grundy , tim obrien , orazio fantasia , nakia cockatoo are all out of contract. I don't see us really playing hard in the trade market unless Trengove and pittard opt out which I think is unlikely. Grundy may be looking to move due to the pies looking like going nowhere, but we will struggle to have trade bait unless players leave and or cap money to afford Grundy who will likely be looking for a big pay unless players leave. Would be a good pick up with Ryder being 30/31 next season although Ryder looks like he might have 2 good season left but who knows with rucks. The rest I'm sort of so so on for what they would cost.

Draft targets

This will unfold as the year goes on. Callum Coleman jones should be a priority for us. As a 199cm ruck forward he is described as a contested marking beast and a very solid bullish unit. I love that in a big and I'm always one that thinks that rather than those brutes being found out as others grow they become bigger brutes at the next level. While he is being talked up as a first round pick I think teams are gonna favour Hayes brander and a bunch of other talls, some teams are gonna pass and in all possibility he could slide into the second round.

I'm looking forward to seeing who else stands up , particularly players who might be available second round.

He doesn't talk like a bloke that wants to leave that's for sure

Really like the look of Jordan Sweet.

Although I Can't see us drafting another ruckman onto the list unless we trade Lobbe. (Are the any clubs who desperately need a ruckman?)

Achee to Sun for like 4th Rounder.

Wouldn't mind looking at Academy Players who don't get picked (ie Austin and Howard)

Father-Son Mitch Mead (will be a late pick potentially even a rookie)

Should have rookie listed Jordon last season !!!

HUGE lad 203cm with a great attitude and a PAFC supporter to boot !!

The Crows & GWS games clearly showed us that our top priority should be the best available KPD. Hombsch, when not injured, is better suited as a number 2, Austin is still an unproven commodity, & Trengrove might be more valuable going forward as a swingman.

A specialist medium/small forward with pace would be second on my list to free up Chad for a permanent midfield gig.

All this talk of trading out players... We tried that last year, basically had a garage sale with our list and there was very little interest. This year wont be any different.

Im predicting 4 delistings (Toumpas, Hewett, Palmer, Neade) two retirements (White, Monfries) and 1 trade (Ah Chee).
