Had huge hopes for him last year, but really seemed to regress this year.

What happened to those long r50 kicks down the wing? He seems the polar opposite of what he was. Now seems to panic with the ball in hand and either handball to someone under pressure or do a dinky little sideways or backwards kick.

Hope he can turn it around next year.

It seemed to happen to most of the team unfortunately. Makes me think there could've been some genuine confusion with game plan. No one bar Ridley, Saad and McGrath really looked confident with what they were doing. Im hoping, and quietly confident that he can bounce back and be that player we all saw.

Well he was battling op during the start of this year, might have something to do with it..

As andleanback has posted above. Word is Redman was struggling with OP.

I suppose even OP should not really impact on your ability to hit targets but what seems to happen to players, particularly those who are inexperienced, is that the lack of conditioning weighs. Sometimes it is genuinely the inability to break a line or a tackle or keep distance from a chasing opponent but I think just as often it's inferred pressure from the knowledge that you're a bit off (and the step behind where you need to be), maybe even just not kicking through the ball.

It certainly makes a mockery of your ability to stand an opponent 1v1 when you need every bit of physical conditioning to react on the lead.

It's been a very disappointing year, and a regression, but there is no reason to assume he cannot get back to the form of 2019 when he was turning it on and looking like our answer to Whitfield or Witherden (who funnily enough has been in a very similar position in and out of the Lions all year).

Hopefully we get a big pre-season into Redman. He was one of the reasons I would have said 12 months ago that our list could take us places (which is not to say I have any idea WTF the list is now).

Redman was drafted as a mid sized forward. If he can't get back to his 2018 form and cant fit in the backline with Francis Ridley Gleezon and BTZ... Could we see how he goes forward again? We do need to get our players flexible to play in different positions. We are also lacking in the front half. What are your thoughts?

still like him in defence.
Strong, aggressive, good distribution by foot and decision making.
His 2019 form was excellent. He and Ridley will form a good pairing to be able to play off each other and cover for each other.

Just gotta get him fit. Do like that he played through the pain when we needed him too.
Tough as nails this kid.

Tim Watson has the same thoughts as me

Tim Watson says: "Mason Redman came to Essendon as a forward, a really smart forward.
"For whatever reason, this club has played him out of form. He can play as a forward again, I would shift him back.

Sure, we can have a look at him forward but that comment from Watson is non-sensical.

It seems to me that he's saying "Redman was a forward, typical Essington has played him out of position and out of form so now lets return him to his position as a junior".

For a start Redman played forward in 2 AFL games in 2016, he was KOd early in his third, and did virtually nothing of note. I doubt Watson has seen any other game.

Are we discounting the very good run of form he showed from 2018 to 2019 in defence? He had a bad year. It was almost certainly a result of injury and a consequent loss of confidence. We're also down to 1 running player in defence (which is Saad) without Redman and a Cat B rookie.

Yeah thought the same when i heard Watson say that.

Particularly with McKenna (and possibly Saad?) going, we need a fit, firing and confident Redman delivering the ball off half back circa 2019

He was dropped several times while Gleeson retained his position in the side. I thought he was treated poorly at the selection table.
he was a very good high half forward at 18s level and with our list I reckon he should be played there.
he lost his run and dare this year.

Should we squeeze him in the forward with the rest of our natural mud sized forwards? Laverde, Langford, Stringer etc.

Surely gets a game down back ahead of Gleeson. Whilst his defensive efforts were ordinary this year at least he provides some run when heā€™s on, MG is useless in pretty much all facets of the game.

Just another head scratch year. Why coaching group sent him deep from the start of games to play on most dangerous small forwards has me stuffed.

weā€™ve got saad whoā€™s as good a small defender in one on one situation as anyone in the game but we send redman to Charlie Cameron one others deep from the first bounce...

saad can defend these guys and still give his offensive efforts but no... letā€™s throw redman on them. Ridiculous coaching

Itā€™s because we canā€™t clone Saad and have no one else who is good on those type of quick creative smalls. Cameron and Lewis Taylor both got off the hook that day.

Previously Saad would play that role and McKenna would get loose, and this year perhaps itā€™d be Fantasia on the loose if he werenā€™t injured.

Redman wasnā€™t up to his own standard either with his own injury issues, which doesnā€™t help and makes it look even worse.

lewis Taylor plays for Sydney? playing redman on Cameron that day doomed us from the start

He should be a straight swap with McKenna, coming off the HBF. Pair him up with Saad.

Let him play a similar role to what Goddard did in his early years with us. The quarterback role.

Why is there a perception that he's a medium defender on here? He's never been an interceptor, and he struggles on the medium (Stephenson et al) type as opposed to the smaller guys.

He didn't struggle on Stephenson in the air. He couldn't go with the lightening pace (especially with under some sort of injury cloud).

I doubt Stephenson has troubled anyone in the air. His go is on the lead and working back to goal.
