For anyone feeling nervous about this game, Dwyane Russell has picked Brisbane. That should put you at ease.

He's been negative about us all year and continually tips against us in big games; he has jinxed Brisbane.

I think if the worse case scenario that Bris goes very hard in the first hard and hopefully there’s no blowout the team can overrun then in the second half considering the last two weeks for Brisbane

I think Bews has to play to sit on Charlie Cameron, who he has a good track record against.
For me:
In: Stewart, SDK (Sub)
Out: Mullin, 2E (Unlucky)

We’re in very, very good selection shape when you can leave out Hawkins, C Guthrie, Clark, Knevitt, Hardie and Parfitt. Only really Conway, Rohan and O’Connor unavailable from possible Best 22.
Who would have predicted Mannagh, Humphries and Neal would be automatic selections in a PF this year?
The transition has been stunning and relatively painless, irrespective of the result on Saturday, given the changing of the guard.

I don't want to see any of the bolded again this year.

Bews had a chat with Krock and spoke about the looming matchup with Cameron

“Just stay as close as you can,” he said.

“If he’s going to kick some goals, you want him to be boundary line snapping over his head.

“If he kicks some freaky goals, I’ll cop that.”

We know nothing's set in stone until the final teams on Saturday afternoon - but that doesn't sound like a player in line to be omitted on Thursday night

The Bews press conference doesn't suggest to me that he's not playing this week.

Based on that I think there's every chance that we see just the one change with Stewart coming in - and someone very unlucky to miss out. Personally think it comes down to Mullin V Tuohy. Does the romance of Tuohy retiring win out over getting another finals game into Mullin. I expect Mullin to play.

And if SDK misses out then we can expect the rumour mill to go into overdrive.

I have to admit, I think this is kind of overstated on a few counts:
  • Cameron isn't what he was a few years ago.
  • Bews isn't a magical cheat code - Cameron has "gotten" him a couple of times, particularly that game in 2019 that he won off his own boot
  • We do have other small defenders who can keep Cameron quiet, but do better offensively.

Tuohy has never been dropped at Geelong. I don't see if happening now, especially not for someone as raw as Oisin.
Can't recall Cam Mooney being "dropped" over his last 4-5 years at Geelong. But it happened in 2011 when an ageing Mooney was left out and replaced by a young kid called Hawkins. Scott will make the right call for the the club - not the player. He has form as recently as 2022 when Holmes was declared fit to play on Friday - and again on Saturday morning. He even old his parents (and host family) he was playing - and we know how that turned out.

Still baffled by the fact that Holmes was declared fit on Friday and Saturday by doctors and Scott still overrid their decision. Balls of steel. And uncharacteristic by him who always says “I have no say in injuries I just listen to the doctors and go with what they tell me”.

Yes, he was - he was left out of the side when fit for the last couple of weeks of H&A and the entirety of finals.

Tuohy has played every game he has been available for this year barring rests for soreness. Frankly, he's played pretty well too - not as well as he did in his late 20s of course, but well.

Team Balance is really important as especially during finals
I think it has to be Tuohy missing out for Stewart
and if SDK was to play it would have to be for Blicavs, J.Henry or Kolo so do see that happening.

the fact that they sent him to do media would suggest he's not in line to be dropped

Saturday forecast is for 'showers increasing, most likely afternoon and evening', upto 4mm..

Given that, I can't see SDK getting selected, its unlikely to be a game for tall forwards, thus extra talls in defence wont be needed.
As disappointed as DeKoning will be, its not like he's been dropped from the side.. I cant see this as a catalyst for him wanting out of the club, ala dropping Mumford for Blake in 2009 was..

However, dropping Neale for Hawkins could see a disgruntled Neale looking to go home to WA..
Geelong made the mistake of dropping Neale for the Bulldogs game, and having no tall target, even in the wet, was a big mistake that day.

Neale must stay in, Hawkins only hope is for Cameron/Neale to fall to an injury..
SDK's only hope to get back into the side is an injury to Stanley, Blitz, Henry or Kolo..
I cant see a option for Guthrie to force his way in..

Stewart in for Mullin/Touhy as the only change.

Great 2022 line up.

2024 only needs Stewart for your ins. SDK maybe. Definitely not the other two.
Yeah I admit calling for Guthrie to return was just plain silly. Pity he's been injury riddled this year as he would have been terrific for Geelong's midfield.

But can we meet half way in the middle and have Hawkins in for Neale? Surely you go with a proven quantity in such a big game.

And SDK who is an absolute gun of a player return for someone of the likes or Bews, Tuohy or Mullin?

So Stewart, SDK and Hawkins in.

No.....no Hawkins please.

Have loved the big fella, always will, but he's not in our Best 22 anymore.

He can't move, and in his absence Neale has added much more mobility and unpredictability to our forward line.

That's brought our other forwards into the game as Neale's ability to lead stretches the opponent's defense by causing uncertainty and opening holes for others to run into.

If we include Hawkins we'll be forced to just bomb it on his head which, as we've seen, is entirely predictable and thwarted by the defense.

Simply not true. A hamstring is never worth the risk, and there is zero proof he was declared medically fit.

Unfortunately no can do.

Neale has had a better season than Hawkins. Dropping him now would be like dropping JVR for Ben Brown if Melbourne had made finals. Crazy. Hawkins was very good as recently as 2023 and has had an amazing career but he's done.

SDK's VFL form didn't bang the door down. I don't see us dropping a small for him and there are no talls he would replace either. He's a slim chance but unlikely.

One of your proposed outs will eventuate. For Stewart.

Brisbane are the best team in the comp. However their control game is Geelong 2019/2020 , you could see Kingsley was a Dimma clone and chaos was smashing BRISBANE control last night. Then the lions had nothing to lose and started taking risks and amping up their pressure.
Anyway most cat fans get their wish of playing Brisbane and even suggested we should be shorter in the betting market…..
seems it’s flag or flop time. Who’s prepared to do a Mitchell?r last 45 minute
Agree that Brisbane should be the best team in it, and after their horrible start, they certainly looked to have hit peak form.
Then some inexplicable losses.
Nevertheless, the record at the G is not that bad, and their last 45 minutes v GWS was brilliant.
Many teams start the way they finished their last game, and given we have played 1 game in 26 days by the time we face Brisbane, I can not visualise us beating them this week.
Nevertheless, I think we have achieved so much this year, a lot more than I had expected, and as long as we can keep key players like SDK and pick up some key draftees, we will remain in contention.
I think Brisbane can go the next step this year, and would not begrudge them if they beat us.

I agree sadly there won’t be a fairytale ending for the big guy unless key injuries forces it

Sad not everyone gets the perfect send off like Joel and Ling did
