He did

"Against Port Adelaide, Bews held the dangerous Willie Rioli – who kicked 4.3 from a season-high seven shots at goal in the Power’s Round 9 win at GMHBA Stadium – to 1.1 from eight disposals."

From today's Krock article in which Jed also talks about matching up on Cameron this week

I just looked at Rioli's highlights. Bews played 100% game time in the first half. But Rioli kicked his goal on Henry (2nd quarter) and was opposed to Kolo in the first quarter a couple of times.

It looks like it was more a direct matchup after half time but they certainly weren't going head to head in the first half.

Compare that to Mullin who was step for step with JHF all the time when he was forward.

Maybe we are keeping Bews warm for a possible Papley match up?
I see Mullin as more of a mid/tagger rather than a defender..................
Stewart for Mullin is likely this week IMHO
Perhaps. And I'm happy for people to disagree with me.

But I don't really see the evidence that Bews would actually be able to stop someone like Papley anyway. When's the last time he actually did a job on a small forward of that quality?

You're not the only one - match reports & reflections of the game have him playing on Rioli and keeping him quiet
He did play on Rioli. But I'm not sure how much you can take out of a matchup like that in an 84 point belting. We could have played a VFL player on Rioli and it wouldn't have made much difference (much the same as the WCE and North games he played).

I think the crows game where he got beaten by Rachelle is the most relevant of the 3.5 games he's played this year.

It's nearly always a team effort with the game being so fast as long as Bews man's Papley at their forward stoppages I'll be happy I believe he's the best equipped and experienced to do that part of the job.

This. I started watching the 2007 GF in a pub and left 10 minutes into the first QTR to stroll around town in pure dread of losing another one after 89, 92, 94, 95. Actually felt sick and couldn’t even finish a beer. Then at 3QTR time someone from work texted me that we were going well so I went into the first place showing it, yet still felt it could end up being a loss. 😩
My Dad was the same.

Was getting messages and calls of congratulations at halftime, and still couldn't calm down and accept we were going to win until 3-quarter time.

We went down to the MCG and some really polite Port people who were leaving gave us their tickets, and we got in with 10 minutes to go.

I'm not sure if there's footage of it, but he had made a made a Cats jumper with '07' on the back, and threw it over the fence to Chappy in the celebrations.

One of my core footy memories as a kid.

Agree 100% on it being a team defence, which is why it's difficult to judge these defensive matchups sometimes.

But agree to disagree that Bews is the a worthy selection currently. I think he was playing VFL all year for a reason. But I'm also willing to cop that many on here will have a different opinion with me on that.

Snap , I was there in 2007 and absolutely feared a comeback until early in the last quarter ( irrational I know)
Goes to show how deep the scars of 92,94 & 95 were , incredibly painful to be there and lose...............

Look I'm conflicted as well we can't ignore either that Joe Daniher signaled to the AFL world that he could be the one to take the game away from the Cats if we lose a big man early and haven't included SDK we could be in trouble as well bown back.Glad it's not my job to pick the side this week I've changed my mind half a dozen times today.

Pretty sure he did, apart from the time he didn’t and even then he was probably still closer than Henry was to let him goal, Henry guarding grass in the goal square 🤦🏻

It wasn't Henry's best moment. Had a cracking game apart from that though.

Looking through the game again it looked like Bews went to Rioli once the ball was in our defence. So defensive stoppages and the like he was with Rioli. But he often pushed up the ground when we were in attack leaving Kolo or Henry on Rioli who normally stayed deep.

I did that trilogy as well as 89. But I knew from Ottens run down directly below me that it was our day, and relaxed totally halfway through the second. The Prelim on the other hand was something else - heart in mouth at the Punt Road end fearing the worst was gonna happen down the other end. Prelims are a different beast, my favourite weekend of the year.

I was in the line for beer at half-time and someone cracked the dead silence by stating the obvious (we've got this). Cue everyone telling them to STFU...

A couple of showers has next to zero effect in modern AFL. The surfaces are so much better than they once were, the footies don't get waterlogged, and players have much surer ball-handling than they did thirty, forty years ago.
lol I was referring to Scott dropping Stanley as a late out in the 2019 QF against Collingwood due to expected rain. Grundy towelled us up and the rain never really came.

lol yep- I went to 2007 and I honestly didn’t relax till about 10 minutes into the last quarter. That’s the scarring of going to all those losing grand finals. These days I’m pretty confident in most of the games I attend- always expect us to get over the line. It’s been a big change in mentality. Much preferable these days.
2007 was the best day. Went with my brother and our teenage daughters - will never forget it.

People who say we have less talent than other contenders really seem to undervalue just how well the likes of Zuthrie, J.Henry, Mannagh, Miers, Dempsey and Humphries are playing at the moment.

They're not big names but they are really good mid rangers.
If you did a top 100 players based on 5 weeks of form, those players would all be in it. So there is that.

The concept of an A grader often has to do with consistently amazing form over a period of time. A guy like Degoey is known as an A grader. But has he shown it this year? Reputation from previous years is what holds him at that level in peoples eyes.

Meanwhile, statistics over the last few weeks would show a very different picture as to who is performing the best right here right now. ANd really, that's all that matters.

Even the concept of an All Australian squad is over a season. Some of those players in that squad would get an absolute pantsing playing on some of the in-form players right now.

Still surprised not much fuss has been made about Jack Henry. He's a completely different player to the one we saw during the middle of the year.
Going to be arguably the most crucial role this Saturday. If he is reading the play well from the get go, it gives Stewart and Guthrie the luxury to counter.
Was thinking about this last night. Everyone lauds the 'star' KPD's like May, lever, Moore, Weitering, Andrews etc.

From the finalists we have Rampe/Melican/McCartin.
Aliir/BZT.
Henry/Kolodjashnij.
Andrews/Payne.
Weddle/Frost.
Taylor/Buckley.
Jones/Lobb
Weitering/Young

Lots of sides making it with maligned, underrated or unheralded set ups.
Moore hasn't been the same since losing Murphy. Pearce, McKay, Lever and May get lots of plaudits for not much return this year.

Add Blicavs to ours.

All the puff piece articles I'm seeing about our forward line, Zach Guthrie, Chris Scott's coaching, our list building abilities, and so forth are making me nervous.

Admittedly literally everything makes me nervous when it comes to footy. But still. Stop praising us so much. 😰

And let's face it, many of those AA players are not even getting a chance to show their wares in a final, because of the weaker players around them. So it's all relevant, you need a sprinkle of stars performing right now, as you say- surrounded by a hard working crew that makes a whole, and let's the highly admired ones shine.

We hear this through interviews with the likes of Close and Mannagh, who say it doesn't matter to the group who kicks the goals. Ego's at the door, so PF here we come.
