While we need to be patient and hope Charlie can get lots of games in quickly while staying healthy..

..wouldn't mind him firing a warning shot in a competitive game.

He's produced glimpses in the VFL and intraclubs, would love to have a bigger sneak preview of his impact in a senior game.

I suggest that will happen at some stage sooner than later, he now has some size about him which is normally against most footballers with two games under their belts.
The coaching staff as we all know are huge fans, so will no doubt back Charlie in with a run of games and not be overly focused on his personal results.

This has been a long time in the making. Suppose he has replaced Majak as my fav player who with backs to the wall has made it when maybe they could have rightly given it away.
All too hard type thing.

Bit of off the charts tall/strong/athletic/skilled potential he has in common with Big Majak too.

I think he’s produced more than glimpses in the vfl.

Probably a tad nastier than Maj, I do remember Charlie taking out Durden at training asked to apologise and said no.

I have put all my eggs in the Comben basket tbh.
Wait what?
That is fantastic, something we’ve missed since Waite and before that as long back as Carey. A forward with a see you next Tuesday attitude.

Geeze Majak Daw had the physical components to be one hell of a footballer.

Unlike a lot of God's Gift (height, build and speed) project players, he already had good skills when he was drafted. His kicking including on the run at full burst was underrated and we all know about his marking. His ruckwork was already pretty sound from day dot.

If we could've got his tank and game sense up to scratch faster and (personal opinion) given him more opportunity from an earlier stage under a coach who let players work to their strengths more, he had the assets to be a poor man's Buddy.

It's not all on us, he takes some of the share for his career too of course. But he got seriously hit by the natural talent fairy.

Even though Drewie did the heavy lifting for him in that game, no player should be able to kick 6 goals in their ~2nd AFL game just 4 years after taking up the sport as a teenager with no prior history of being developed or coached in an elite sporting program. It was ridiculous.

Your post makes me both happy and sad.

I'll stand by it TBL.

Nick Larkey is an example of a player who produced more than glimpses in the VFL, winning the Frosty Miller Medal.

Unless I'm forgetting something, Comben has only played < 10-15 VFL games total and burst through in 2-3 of them. He hasn't been the bona fide gamechanger at that level (yet) that Larkey was prior to promotion.

I agree with TAO about Comben's upper limits but it's not demonstrated statistically consistently at any level yet.

Remember early on yelling at Makak to mind the mark, he was actually looking 👀 at us in the crowd, while his bloke ran off and kicked it forward
to paraphrase, He was magnificent, but he was not a footballer

My simple hope for Comben is continuity. Get 15+ games into him this year and, with the new coaching, the talent will shine.

Fair enough.

I think Comben’s year last year in the vfl was a little under rated. He averaged 2.1 goals per game vs Larkeys 2.4 the year he won the frosty. I think when you factor in the team Comben played in last year vs the side Larkey played in, the fact it was comben’s first real year of senior footy, and that he dealt with some knee soreness through the year, the two years are pretty comparable.

But that’s all kind of irrelevant. Maybe the issue is our differences in definitions of “glimpses”. To me glimpses are 2-3 really good things a game.

Comben’s best statistical games last year were

4.1, 14 disposals 7 marks
3.4, 13 disposals 8 marks

Which to me is more than a glimpse, but a young key forwards holding down a key post in a terrible team

Loved Souva's VFL work but he was very much a crafty 2-4 goal a game player that year rather than huge game breaker.

I wonder whether we knew what to do with him at the time. A decade later, you’d stick him at CHB and tell him to mark everything that came near him. Back then it was ruck or forward.

He did play back for a while, didn't he? And as far as I remember, he was pretty adept at it. He really could've been anything

He lacked a coach. He should have been a star by 24 by simply learning leading patterns. As King Corey said, he had natural gifts and a solid football base as well. There was a lack of trust in him, and he felt it. There was either poor coaching or Majak is a complete mental dunce. I lean on the former. Hopefully Charlie gets good coaching to go with the trust I sense we have in him. And by coaching, he needs to learn patience and when to go.

I recall venturing to the Shepparton to watch Nth take on the Hawks I think. Maj played down back it was very early in his career. He didn’t mark it much but spoilt about 647 contests with his amazing closing speed.

So how we didn’t pick up on it then I’m not sure 🤷‍♂️ the game is on the YouTube’s from memory
