AFL Player #35: Matt Guelfi - Re-signs on a 2 year deal! Teenage girl fans rejoyce - 30/8

I think the comparison does a disservice to Snelling. Guelfi has never elevated himself to above 20-28 on our list and gets games because he’s durable and can play a variety of roles. In comparison Snelling is rated highly by the coaches and sits comfortably best 22.
Agree with this assessment. I don't think he needs a specific position. He is a hard nosed utility who maybe still has a few % of improvement left. His ceiling isn't super high - but players in that 20-28 range end up playing a lot of games, particularly if they are versatile.

It wasn't a comparison on quality, just type.

Snelling is a workhorse type, the original comment was that if Guelfi tidied up his disposal he'd be a gun, when it's simply not true. Guelfi with better disposal might be a best-22 workhorse like Snelling, though probably not quite that clearly inside the 22.

Guelfis running ability would be a bit off Snellings I'd assume Other than that they have pretty much the same tools. Snellings just a better natural footballer. If he had another 10cm he'd be elite I have no doubt Snelling would avg 25 disp as a full time onballer whereas Guelfi doesn't know hoe to find it that much in that same role Guelfi needs to find his spot either back or forward. He's food depth because he seems like he can play anywhere. Can he shut down forwards smallor does he become a pressure small forward that gets us ball ups in the front 50

From the first post in this thread for context as to what he was when he came in;

Quote from Claremont footy manager
"Matt's got a fair bit of class. He is another who missed out last year but played every game in the league team this season. He's got super strong hands he is an inside midfielder by trade but can go forward and mark it. He's a beautiful long kick, crashes in hard, tackles well, but because of the high-collision style he plays, he was often sore going into games, so he probably just needs to get stronger and his body a bit harder. They are easy things to do in an AFL program"

Yeh watched him down at claremont. The kick is something thst i thought he was doing better at WAFL than AFL now. He was an attacking player at claremont. Onball rest forward and have the ability to hit the scoreboard.

I dare say if Tippa is battling then he would be first looked at as a pressure half forward like snelling. From memory he did start playing forward real late last year but hes a tough one to track because hes so versatile

If Tippa isnt ready for AAMI series game then i suspect we will turn to Guelfi, Waterman, Dev and Snelling as the small forwards with whoever plays best getting the spot on the field and the other the sub for round 1 (If Tippa still not ready to risk)

I assume Snelling will play the same role he has been, pending fitness that's the same role Smith is supposed to play, but Smith could arguably also play more time up forward to cover it.

Wright - Francis - Jones
Snelling - Smith - Tippungwuti

Swing Perkins in for Tippungwuti and push him up the ground more, play Smith closer to goal, is my guess.

Yeh without Tippa

My money would be on HJ, Francis, Wright, Perkins, Dev, Snelling with Caldwell as the 7 forwards

Guelfi found a lot of ball playing a half forward role against Collingwood late last year, but his accuracy by foot was ordinary.

Or allow Perkins and Smith to alternate those roles at their leisure. Smith was outstanding playing that half-forward/mid pressure role late last year.

Assuming Smith is fully fit, yes he's good in that role. But he also has better goal sense (IMO) than Perkins to be more damaging up forward if we're scratching the barrel for a small forward.

Tries hard but at the end of the day, his skills and IQ as a footballer are just so limited. He's not overly quick which hinders his actual ability to close down opponents, which is crucial for a presha forward. He's not a goal kicker and not a playmaker.

Essentially, he's a handsome and younger version of Townsend.

You can make the argument for being best 22, but he is simply wasted as a small forward.

He's the perfect combination of shite and fit enough to constantly play to really drive me crazy.

You're overthinking the game if you can find him a spot on a list.

Patrick McGinnity would've played 150 games at Essendon.

I would also say while I found Dylan Clarke an insanely interesting player due to his strengths and flaws, I understood delisting.

I do not understand delisting him and then putting Guelfi in the spot that you had Dylan Clarke play in when you picked him

I can . One could not kick.
Guelfi is in the side because Walla and Snelling are not. Pretty simple .
Hard edge. Limited ability but you need hard edge . He does not get a game when the next hard edge player is better.
