Autopsy 35 point loss vs. Pies

End of the day we played the top team with

Lazzaro
Spicer

Ineffective afl footballers

Plus

Hall
Howe
CCJ

That aren’t good enough to play afl football.

Kicked the 4th highest score against the pies this year. Without our best player.

Positives

Phillips breakout game
Scott showed how good he can be 2 weeks in a row
Wardlaw great by foot
Larkey 5 goals
Ford backs up with another good game

About as good as we can expect at this stage

Good:
Fords first half
Phillips & Greenwood
Scott gut running in the last. Am a knocker but the ability to turn himself from a beep test runner into an actual ball getter is the step we need.
Logue fought hard as a defender
I’ll also give Larkeys last quarter a mention but pressure off and lead ups and arms out, playing in front should also be a Non-negotiable

Overall a proud effort, yes the Pies largely took their foot off the pedal but after the 3rd quarter there was a chance our heads went down and the margin blew out. Keep fighting in the end, the next step from blow-outs is in actual fact honourable losses where the players play with pride

Negatives:
Ben McKay weak as piss
Spicer just not up to it. Sure give him one more year but bloody hell - can someone give him Bobby Hills number for some coaching?

Didn’t have a huge issue with McDonald or Howe today. Not perfect players but solid bodies. Gives Bergman, Ford, Powell types time to develop. Certainly don’t want either in by round 22 2024 but did enough today for ticks.
Also don’t see the need to drop CCJ yet - Comben and Xerri are much better yes but CCJ is a player to be kept around if he’s happy to be depth

Edit: Lazzaro also not up to it.

We put in 4 quarters and mostly a good effort... just failed to put it on score sheet in first half.
The following could have put on a collingwood jumper and no one would have noticed.
Howe and Mckay
Spicer and Lazzaro run around and try but unfortunately aren't up to it.

Phillips was noticeably good. He maneuvered his way through a good midifield all day.
Greenwood was very strong all day. Great game.
Goldy really put in and was terrific.

You can see its starting to string together a little bit.

McKay is a weird one.

Does something ok then does something so incredibly frustrating that it's remarkable how he manages to make his opponent look stronger in the contest.

**** me Cox got him out when he had position. That's just criminal.

Honestly I can live with that, didn't put the cue in the rack. Kids showing signs. Bailey Scott and Stevo have turned it around.

........and Harley Reid, amirite?

Was great how often they took on the tackle and then just dropped it
When you take the emotion out of it, all I want is consistency with how the apply everything, so frustrating, they will always find some technical justification for an isolated decision, but then go the other way with another one where the jumpers are on opposite players!

Lazzaro, Howe and Spicer just don’t look up to it.

McKay is playing terribly but he is not a terrible player. Either he is on the way out or there is something else going on.

Ford had a really good first half, Philips had a good 2nd half and Powell stepped up in the last. Both Wardlaw and Sheezel were a class above with ball in hand, both looked a little sore today.

Greenwood was great, Goldy was dominant and Larkey finished well after some pi55 poor efforts in the 1st half.

Still think Cam in the middle needs to be promoted more often.

Solid game all round, but again emphasises the need to get a better mix of run in this team. Even Scott, our best runner, looks like he runs in quick sand against a number of Pies.

We played really well and would have learnt a lot about the pressure the pies bring. The pies will play in the GF this year.
Positives. Phillips, Griffen Logue, Ford, Curtis, Bergman all tracking well and the consistency of Scott, Zurhaar, Larkey, Simpkin.
Negatives. Spicer no impact, Howe is merely back-up, CCJ couldn’t back up last weeks performance, Lazzaro no impact. Would love to see Tarryn Thomas take Aaron Halls place at half back

Good game overall, I think we’re starting to turn a corner. Really enjoyed watching Eddie Ford’s Phillips’s games today. Hope they continue to back Wardlaw in with more games because the signs are absolutely there.

Bring in solid role players to replace the likes of Spicer and Lazzaro and it would have made for an even better contest,

Getting outmarked when in front when your main skill is marking, that was horrible.

He also got beaten in a contest at ground level by Cox, no-one should get beaten at ground level by him.

Not overly disappointed as we could easily have been dismantled by 100pts. A few slow burners (like LDU) that give me hope - WP, Eddie and TP. Bailey gets better as the game goes longer. Definitely getting a really good look at who is the future and just need to improve our bottom 6 or so players.

We kick those set shots we’re in it to our eye . Plus umpires pay the obvious frees they missed.
