I was watching the tape of the West Coasts match when I arrived home from Manuka severak weeks ago and almost choked on my can when Jason McCartney said at 1/4 time the reason Watt may have been benched was because he struggles to lift sometimes against lesser name forwards. If this is the case then I expect Shannon to be pumped up like the Hulk come Saturday night when he takes big bad bald Barry to the cleaners. I for one hope he takes more angry pills than the Aussie cycle team and gives it to him.

Better for Doyle to interchange with Ball to get him used to full time rucking.

Also, being successful on hall doesnt mean being successful on the team.

True, yes but I thought it better to have another tall target on the ground.Give him some time on the ground not the pine.

Doyle gets a break at FF and on the bench. Best of both worlds?

I have now edited it, but I couldn't think who to put on the first bench position.I'm obviously missing someone...

Our worst game of the year last time against Sydney and even when we led early they scored everytime they went forward. Hall killed Colbert but Brown did better. One out Watt would get thrashed but i think he'll get more assistance from Archer and co this time.

No, but stopping a team's most important player is always a good start.
Not always. Bazza's had some shockers where defenders and umpires have frustrated him badly enough for his anger to show up again. Even though when this happens, a lot of our other players turn into multiple goal scorers.

I think the Swans vs Roos is one of those cases where one side matches up extraordinarily well against another. The Swans midfielders have always been able to match up against us, but we haven't been able to match up on your forwards, especially the midsized blokes who have a bit of pace.

In recent years, I've looked at the Swans backline as the one place where we could win the contest, but the Swans seem to have a "no-name" backline who work extraordinarily well as a unit.

Same trouble against Melbourne, so it's obviously a deficiency not only in our weekly 22, but also on our list. Maybe that's where Jesse Smith could slot straight in next year, because there's a definite opening.

Craig Bolton beats blokes he shouldn't beat... blokes who are bigger, stronger, faster and just plain better. But credit to him, and the whole backline as a unit. They are as cohesive and efficient as any going around and are a good example of the total unit being greater than the sum of all its individual parts.

Schauble straightens it up too. He will most likely take Rocca, freeing up Bolton and Barry for Petrie and Motlop.

I think the wildcard is Leigh Brown. If our backline can contain Hall, O'Keefe, Davis, O'Loughlin and Nicks, hopefully Brown won't be needed in defence. And christ almighty I hope Brown doesn't play in the ruck.

Possibly a defensive role at half forward on Goodes? Browny's best game last year was on the ball against Goodes.

Considering Barry hall kicked 4 goals in the first half and i would've almost bet he would almost kick 10 shannon watt has to be given credit when its due... 3 of halls goals were because he was too quick on the ground and had much support when we were playing crap...... and i thought that watt did well in a one on one situation... really has been an unsung hero.... 1 goals in the 2nd hall to hall... lloyd was held to 1 goals.... i think he plays better when he has a challenge and when barry hall took the challenge in the 2nd half shannon watt stood up... and glen archers performance on O'Loughlin in the 2nd half when o'loughlin was killing him was pur brilliance and showed the character of the big arch

personally i think that our backline won us the game!!!!!

Kangaroos coach Dean Laidley blasted the performance of Roos full-back Shannon Watt in his post-match media conference after St Kilda ran away with a 51-point victory at Telstra Dome on Sunday.

Gehrig kicked two goals on Watt within the opening five minutes of the match as the Saints slammed home three goals during that period.

Laidley labeled the defender's efforts as 'poor'.

"I was very, very disappointed in Shannon Watt's first 15 minutes (of the match) to let three insipid goals go through," Laidley said.

"We shouldn't have to do it (move Glenn Archer onto Fraser Gehrig). That's what really irritated me about Shannon Watt's game.

"There's no doubt we missed Leigh Brown. It's as simple as that. Leigh Brown plays and I know for a fact that that doesn't happen."

Watt, who played every minute of every match in 2003 - the only player in the AFL to achieve that feat last year - was dropped in round seven this year, but Laidley said he would not omit him next week, although he conceded he would be on his back this week.

"I'm going to whack him between the ears all week. He's been given lots of opportunities and I thought he let the side down today. Not so much the second part but the first part, when the seeds were sown and we had to change the structure," Laidley said.

Very surprising comments to me...From where I sat, the way the entire team started the game, it wouldn't matter who was on Gehrig. And even if Watt made a couple of mistakes out there in those opening moments, why not give him a chance to redeem himself. Archer was pushed off the ball like a kid, yet it took 3 quarters for a move to be made.

We all know how badly we missed Brown and Colbert today, but under the circumstances, I thought our starting backline matchups were the only possibilities for us all day and had to be persevered with. I am positive that putting Arch back there didn't influence our first quarter revival, but the centre clearances did. With the midfield holding its own, Watt on Gehrig was the ONLY way to go all day IMHO. But Watt was moved off before our midfield even got their hand on the ball. That's how I saw it anyway...

Yeah, I wonder if that was a bit of frustration spilling over after the last quarter and he regrets it already. The team deserved a spray for the last quarter, but to single out Watt publicly....well I just hope that Watt has a thick skin.

I reckon Dean is spot on with his comments about Watt. Surely Watt would have been told on Tuesday (after Brown was suspended) that he will be playing on Fraser. He had all week to prepare for him, and the first 10 minutes of the game he was killed. Yeh Fraser was to stong for him but some of the goals he kicked 9first 10 min) wernt from marks but more crumbing and watt was no where to be seen.
Watt has improved this year but im not sure he is good enough for full back, he seems too slow to react to certain situations

I think he'll be a player. His improvement last year and then again to this year has been sensational. Last year he was killed in one-on-one contests, but that aspect of his play has improved immensely. The one place he's been found out, both this week and last week, is that he's not quick enough to recover once he's brought the ball to ground. But considering he couldn't even do that (on the likes of Hall and Gherig mind you) before last year, I'm willing to give him another year or to to tune that side of things up.

I also think that Laidley is developing him very carefully. Last year it was all encouragement and faith. This year, when he didn't cut it, he was dropped. Now he's getting a bit of a spray in the media. Carrot and Stick approach... I'm trusting that Dean knows how to get his players to respond.

You pussies, Watt’s a big boy and can handle a tiny little spray. Ahhh so what The G-String went on to hammer our best defender for the last 10 after that. Watts only human, of course he wont care, it part of footy isn’t it?

Didn't think he needed to single out Watt in the media. And those who say he should be used to it, it's fine when the media does it, but would hurt when coming from your own coach in a public forum.

So where's the blast for Arch?
I'll take the spray for Arch and throw it straight back at Laidley. Archer on Gehrig is a f!@#$% rediculous move and should never ever happen again. Archer is not even 6 foot tall. Terrible move by Laidley.
Watt is not a footballer it's as simple as that. He never will be. He just doesn't have it. He tries hard and runs fast but he just isn't a footballer. He can't read the play like Colbert can. He can't wrestle like McCartney could and he doesn't win possesion like Archer could. Why Laidley continues with Watt is anyones guess but if he wants Watt then he should have stuck with him. I would rather see Gehrig hick 10 on Watt and let Archer have a little more room to roam around mopping up and clearing it forward then for Watt to do nothing all day and have Archer in a totally defensive position where he is of no benifit to the team and still get beaten. We lost 2 players today instead of 1.
Watt is not a player and Laidley must no it but surely he had to leave him there under the circumstances at least for a half.

Couldn't agree more angus. You have hit the nail smack bang on the head.

By the way, if gehrig were to get injured, saints would be $hithouse, certainly would have lost today...people should start spreading the no gehrig no saints thing just like we got...

Angus, I think your post is way off the mark. If anything, I think Shannon has shown a helluva lot as a fullback this year, and he just had bad day, not helped by being moved straight away without having a chance to redeem himself. Considering we didn't have Colbert to general the backline and Brown to slot back there, the odds were really stacked against Watt from the start - my comment about Arch is not meant to criticise his performance, but more to underline that IMO it's unfair to be singling out Shannon like that. Yes, he had a dog of a day, but he's come on in leaps and bounds this season. It's going to happen sometimes, especially when you're short handed, and I would much rather Dean give him a blast behind closed doors than in a public setting.

I just don't see why he would move Watt off Gehrig so early without giving him a chance to make amends, and then blast him like that in public. You think Shannon himself thinks he played well?

I feel so sorry for Shannon he doesn't deserve any of that. He gave it all he could and the umpires didn't help either. I wouldn't say we have the best full back but tell me 5 players who have beat Gehrig this year.

I love Jess Sinclair #9

Given there have been questions over Watt's mentality on occasions (re: playing leser known opponents), maybe this is what he needs. Not suggesting G-String is lesser-known though.

Besides, if it gets Watt p1ssed off, great! He needs the agro.

So where was the blast for the senior players who turned the ball over so badly by kicking out on the full several times, PLEASE STAND UP, A.Stevens, G.Archer and S Grant.
To pick out one player for for giving away 2 goals is ridiculous, when there were so many other bad instances yesterday.
Maybe Dean was trying to take the heat off himself for several bad decisions he made, one being including B.Harvey when he obviously wasn't fit and leaving Jeremy Clayton languishing in the 2's

Oh Golly. I feel that berating Watt publicly was a cop out for the team's effort of letting thier forwards run riot. I just hope Watt takes it like a man and feels the bite from JYD for a long time. I was only dissappointed that perhaps Corey wasn't tried as a roadblock (10 metres ahead of Gehrig) as our options without Colby and Brown were always suspect. I agree that Watt wasn't agressive / strong enough but with delivery he was getting and nobody really giving Arch / Watt some roadblock assistance then we were always going to be hammered. The Saints slick movement of the ball helped Gehrig find the open space too often. Don't agree with Angus' views on Watt. Watt has come on in leaps n' bounds this season IMO.
