Good point, how about a list of players that didn't make it (under Pagan) but have blossomed at other clubs or just plain crashed. I'll start

K Kingsley
T McGrath (great player)
B Scholl (see above)
R Pyman (HAD IT ALL BEFORE HE CAME TO NTH)
E Lissenden
C Groom
E Hewitt
L Smith
J Dalichenco (spelling)

I think it was Schimma who traded McGrath, not Pagan. And Pyman had quite a few injuries when he was with us. Same with Groom - he had chronic injuries. As for Brad Sholl, he was traded for Robert Scott, and Scott was very good for us (wouldn't mind having another one of him - a very good tagger).

The problem with the "what could have been" lists is that for them to be in the side, then someone else would have had to step aside. You take someone like Lissenden - he was at the Roos at a time when we had Carey, Longmire, Roberts, Crocker, and Sholl rotating through the forward line - was there really a spot for him in the team? As for Hewitt, I thought Pagan treated him roughly, but since then, he's been delisted by the Crows, so perhaps Pagan's judgement was right?

While I take on board Carlos's point about how harsh Pagan was on the kids, it really isn't that much of a different attitude that Sir Alex Ferguson takes with his young players at Manchester United - skills are one thing, mental toughness is another. Ideally you want both, but if a young player lacks mental steel, then all you can do is to instill it in him - make the kid prove the coach wrong. But that's only one part of the story. From what I can gather, as good as Harris has been, he doesn't follow the coach's instructions to the letter, and Pagan is one coach who doesn't let the players who haven't earned their stripes have any leeway.

It is a hard balancing act - how tough do you have to be, but when do you need to encourage a player? When Pickett first got established in the team, apparently Pagan said to him, "We're going to play you in our first four games - you'll stay in the side no matter what happens". It just surprises me that Pagan was so constantly tough on the kids. The flipside is that you don't want to be too soft on them - these kids are making at least $50k a year, everyone adores them, they don't have to pay for drinks or look too far if they want a girl. It'd be easy to cruise through your footy career, especially if you have some natural talent (hello Croad, Everitt, almost everyone who has played for Richmond in the last 20 years). Even one of the Essendon fans on BigFooty (Wally, I think) said that the Dons players had become a bit too comfy with life. Hopefully Pagan has instilled some mental toughness into Smith, Harris and co....but that in doing that, they'll value their time and fire off some brilliant performances when they're in the seniors. And even better, maybe having been kept on the leash for so long, Carlton will pay the price when our kids belt them in 2003.

Harro was troubled with a severe back complaint this year and was lucky to play the games he did.Lets hope he can overcome his troubles to become the champion we all know he could be.

harris reminds me of me...nice and personable, but needs to be respected as a player in order to perform, and if continually knocked for doing the little things wrong grows increasingly angry, dispirited, suffers in confidence....next year will be a coming out party for all our young blokes...i reckon we'll have an indifferent start then start to go from strength to strength half way through the season and go into the 2004 season raring to go...

bit hard on pyman as a player as he was the first well documented case of foot fractures, now there is tratment, in his day it ended your career

Hey?!?!

Either you've started following the St Kilda footy club's mardi gras briggaide or you know something we dont about our future stars!!

Not that theres anything wrong with that kind of thing.....

... who am i kidding?

Seriously, why weren't these 2 included in the side yesterday... After harro's sensational intra-club games, you would think her would be a definate starter....

It doesn't make sence, if anybody has any news on it, please share???

Did they play for Port Melb???

The four to be dropped from the original squad of 28 were always going to be stiff not to play, but from all reports Harro has been the standout in the scratch matches. I hope its not a discipline thing.

the two of them were first round picks with pretty big reputations in the U18s and captains of their respective Victorian sides. Where do you think their careers are at?

We have hardly seen either of them, and Harris in particular hit a brick wall after some really good Pre-Season games in his first year. Dylan Smith has been even quieter than Harris. It would be costly if these two players fail to become AFL footballers...do you think they are capable of making it?

I think im sick of hearing about them not getting a game. After reading Teaguey's comments in the age about how great laidley is for giving the young guys a go i fail to see how these two have missed out on the opening game! Still plenty of games to come but i have a feeling this is the last year for them if nothing gives soon!

I'll stick my neck out.

Smith will not make it. Not at north anyway. We have too much of his type and he is a fair way down the pecking order.

Harro is a mystery. This is looking like his third preseason where he has been flying early but doesnt get a game in the seniors and then his form just tails right off.

What is it that we dont know about him? He just looks like a star in the making.

Last year was just bad luck. He got the flu or something after being picked in the first round. Cos we kept winning, he couldn't get back in.

The thing is, Smith, Harris and Junior all were picked for games last year without their MK form really warranting it. Seems to me that they were being developed slowly but deliberately.

This year they have to establish themselves... I have no doubt Harro can make it, but Dylan seems to have stalled a bit...

There isn't much point talking about this topic after one preseason game. Both boys had great pre-seasons according to all reports. They did not crack it for the first Wiz Cup game, just because there are plenty of other people coming off great pre-seaspns. The 24 can't stretch into 30.
I will say with some certainty that both will get their chance this season. Harris may even get his this Sat night. Whether they take their opportunity remains to be seen. But I think, despite their high draft selections, it is far too early to speculate about their futures when the boys are 20 yo.
Shannon Watt has been with us for 5 years, and I still hold high hopes for him. Young players need time, especially if they are fighting for a midfield position which is bloody hard to get at North at the minute.

It's one thing to have a go at them, but be honest, who would you drop to make way for either Smith or Harris?

Who really cares people....
If they make it then they make it, but if they dont well big fu*kin s*it, its not as if we are in love with them anyway.

It's a fair comment, as we have got a plethora of midfielders, but I disagree.

I see Smith as an inside type player and although we have many midfielders, good inside players are very hard to find (just ask Richmond).

I see our current good proven inside midfield players as:
A.Stevens, Simmo and Robbins. With Makepeace and Harris falling into the unproven category. Harvey, King and Grant are superb outside midfielders who would be wasted at the bottom of the packs.

I think Smith played very well in the Muzzas last year, he was often quite instrumental in us winning clearances. He might appear to be lacking pace and skill, but his toughness and work ethic will eventually win him a spot. He also has a great footy brain, he just needs a chance and he'll mature into being a good inside midfielder. He still has time on his side, he's improving.

SMITH has shown enough to stick with him for at least this year and next. I wouldn't give up on him yet....

We've got plenty of running and in and under midfielders, but whats different about him IMO is that he has intuative reflexes and quick hands in the clinches and seems to find enough space and time to make his touches count.

As his game and body develops he could become a real play maker (ala Matty Larkin or Greg Williams)...

HARRIS is a real head scratcher. Going by the reports in here I was expecting him to be one of the first to make a big impression under JYD.

If he doesnt play this weekend I hope someone in the media picks it up and asks JYD why....

Not that I wouldn't be looking to give him every opportunity, but my intuition tells me the same thing. He might end up being more valuable as a trade? Love him to succeed at the Roos though. Whoever it was that noted his game against the Weagles in the preseason a couple of years ago; I agree. He showed something that night.. his first game with us.

Well, the training reports I've read say Smith has been a mixed bag, at times looking promising, at times looking low on confidence and skills. Harris has been reported as having put on even more muscle and that his workrate and fitness have been top notch, and that his disposal by foot, whilst still not great, has improved.

Certainly both have been, and will continue to be, tested by the competition they face for spots in our midfield. I reckon how well they pass this test will be as big for them as the playing/skills side of things.

Careful whose boyfriend you slag skarks! Hurricane, for one, seems pretty keen on Harris! ;)
