The thing for us is we've built up a war chest to target elite players such as Martin and Kelly. This isn't something that's happened overnight it's taken over a year of planning.

It's always going to be a hard sell to leverage an elite talent to another team when that talent isn't disgruntled with their current club.

If we miss out on both I'll be disappointed but won't be in the depths of despair that you seem to think North supporters will be in.

We'll manage or contracts so that they war chest is preserved until we start to snare elite talent from elsewhere.

IMO, the reality is, there should be no compensation for a Free Agency move... That's why it's called "FREE"... it's not called compensation agency.

If a player is allowed to assess his options, you, as a club, have every access to give him your best offer (and I don't just mean money). If they choose to leave, then it's bad luck, you had your chance and blew it!

What makes it hard is that Free Agency only kicks in after 8 years, so the number of free agents is pitiful to be honest.
IMO free Agency should be available after 4 years of service, (so min of 2 contracts). So if you lost a player, the market for a replacement would be much much bigger.

Also if the market was that big, these "Godfather" deals probably wouldn't exist.
