Ryan Clarke

Player Profile

The Sydney Swans recruited Ryan Clarke from North Melbourne ahead of season 2019 and he’s since shown promising signs as a young midfielder. The number four is a prolific ball-winner and can also be used to blanket a star on-baller, which he proved last year in shutting down gun Kangaroo Shaun Higgins and classy Magpie Steele Sidebottom. Clarke played 14 senior games in a stop-start 2019 campaign and has set his sights on cementing a spot in coach John Longmire’s best 22 this year. Draft history: 2015 National Draft selection (North Melbourne), No. 31 overall

Ryan Clarke

DOB:17 June 1997

He did have a few very frustrating handballs - but he also had a few really quick and effective extractions that launched a chain.

I won't say he was GOOD with ball in hand by any stretch, but he wasn't horrendous - just a few that were really noticeable, particularly because they were part of an otherwise excellent chain.

I will say, he wasn't alone - Collingwood brought the heat early and our skills by hand did not stand up in general. We got better by the second half.

His disposal this year has been solid, if limited, and this was a dip into some of his worse ball use from earlier in his career. Hopefully he can put that out of his mind, focus on the great job he did defensively, and reset before finals.

The skill level the whole side is so high that it does make Clarke's skill level pretty noticeable. Chains of beautiful possession often end with him and he'll either just get by or turn the ball over, but that said, he's doing exactly what is asked of him right now and there's no way I'm leaving him out. He's proving himself effective at curbing half back flankers who normally drive the opposition forward. We'll be playing the likes of Daniel Rich, Kiddy Coleman, Christian Salem, Mitch Duncan, Hayden Young, Jordan Clark over the next month so he'll have a role on them. The interesting thing will be whether he can still have an influence on the rebounding flankers who are also great in the air like Tom Stewart. He did it on Dawson the other week so that'll be an interesting one to watch if we play Geelong.
Yeah his skill with ball in hand is not at the level of the other players but his influence on the game has otherwise been huge. His ability to shut down a key opposition player to the point where it forces the other team to alter their set up is so valuable.

If he can improve on his disposal and decision making just a bit more it would be amazing.

We are very lucky that we have a side with so many good ball movers.

Blakey, McInerney, Fox, Paddy, Warner, Gulden, Heeney, Franklin, Florent, and Lloyd would all have claims at being the best ball user in different teams, yet they're all in our team. When one drops off, I'm usually impressed by a game of another one of them. We have some amazing playmakers.

Most clubs only have 2-4 users like we have above, and having Clarke be able to shut down 25-50% of their best ball movers is 100% worth it. We have tried using Wicks and Ronke, and although their ball use is better, we needed a consistent shut-down player more than a playmaker (see above), and that is why Clarke's spot is his to drop.

Great article on Clamps, seems like a great guy and humble to boot.

Very much a part of that young group. Happy for him, even though I'm a big Wicks fan. You have to wish our players every success.

Glad he's getting the recognition. 'Everyone playing their role' is a cliche, but he epitomises it.

As well as nullifying Daicos, racked up reasonable stats:17 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles, also 3 clearances. Love a player who can win his own ball. Does need to improve his decision making in close though.

It does make you wonder why no other team tried to lock down on Daicos. Especially as Clarke's success in the last month had become apparent.

Not to mention that oh so close behind!

I owe Clarke and Fox an apology. I distinctly remember telling a mate a couple of years ago that this team can never be a serious contender when they are carrying shitters like Clarke and Fox.

Both absolutey best 22 at the moment in a top side. Not the most prodigious talents but work super ****ing hard and have become really important cogs.

Just another victim with Salem.

Salem
Avg 18
Kick to handpass ratio 2:1

Final 12
Kick to handpass ratio 1:1
Cut him by a third, no space and had to release the ball quickly with 2 clangers.

Swans fan behind me was bitching about him all night. Claimed Salem had 34 touches and 2km gained. Then one of his mates said he has like 11 and he finally shut the **** up
