This thread is not about Covid, lockdowns, or vaccines. It is about Donald Trump. While Trump was in office during the pandemic and his response to Covid is relevant, there are pertinent threads for you to post your opinions on those things in.

Similar argument made here about Latino support for Trump.
Was quite interesting and eye-opening for me.
Essentially, the idea of communism/socialism as equal to corruption, terrible work and life conditions, is deeply ingrained in those coming to the US from various nations in Latin/South America. Understandably given their experience there, many of the governments and leaders they've lived through previously.
And hence the idea of the strongman appeals.

It doesn't make much sense though. There's not much difference between living under a supposedly communist dictatorship and a supposedly fascist dictatorship. What they both have in common is that an authoritarian regime has to squash all resistance in order to retain power. That means they take control of the media, ban opposition parties, and extend very few real freedoms to their subjects. They create a layer of oligarchs who take control of the wealth and assets. It matters not whether there was originally some kind of ideology underlying the regime. They all look pretty similar in the end. And they all have a "strongman" at the top.

If immigrants from South America have lived under such regimes and hated them, you'd think they'd want to preserve democracy at all costs, however flawed the democracy is. They'd recognise the signs of a potential strongman and understand the dangers.

They associate communism/socialism to being anti democratic in and of itself. And capitalism is freedom in and of itself.

Point being if you are for free and fair elections you can have whatever economic strategy and theories you like within the paradigm of democracy.
