His vote and % margin leads were smaller than each of the 4 preceding, consecutive Democratic presidential candidates who were more popular than their opponents, by bigger margins (including him twice).

Not really a landslide or demolition job by recent standards. Unless of course this is another example of the bar being set lower for Republicans.

From an electoral college perspective it was an absolute thrashing. And popularity contest or not its the electoral college numbers that matter.

The electoral college (DEI for Republicans) isn't as relevant when we're talking about how many people support someone vs the other candidate, which is the context of this discussion.

It wasn't even a high EC margin based on recent history. Almost on par with Biden and Trump's first win. Certainly smaller than Obama or Clinton.
