I do not object to us taking over Canada, as long as eating poutine won't be mandatory for citizens. My cardiologist would not approve.

As long as Canadians can vote for the electoral college, have proportionate house reps and 2 senate seats, it would be beneficial for the US and the world (maybe not Canadians).

Would backfire on Republicans though.

In our Constitution it says we can claim New Zealand as a state whenever we like, I'd be horrified if we ever actually did it.

Good story but not true.

Section 6 of the Constitution (definitions) mentions New Zealand as it, together with Qld, NSW, Vic, Tas, SA and WA were all colonies of the UK prior to the Constitution being settled. But NZ was not interested in participating choosing to go on its own path to nationhood.

The theoretical option to join rests with NZ and is still there. BUT there is absolutely no power in the Constitution giving the Commonwealth of Australia the power to 'claim' NZ. S121 merely outlines the circumstances of admitting NZ or other 'new states' could be admitted if they chose to do so.

Why are people so blase about a direct threat to seize land from a sovereign nation?? This isn't normal, this isn't good "business" this is highly concerning.

This has people on Breitbart and The Gate Way Pundit up in arms,
They agree with taking over Greenland and Canada but how dare they vote and get membership in the house and senate.

It’s 2025, the truth no long matters to anyone
To be fair to the OP, back in the dark ages before the Internet and stuff, I remember my Uni Lecturer asking a first year class question that went something like...

'The Australian Constitution gives our government the power to co-opt NZ as an Australian state...why don't they'?

Took a few responses before the lecturer admitted he made the proposition up - point being to check assumptions or something. Still sticks with me which is why I responded to the post.

While it's far easier to check for truth in 2025 it's also and just as easy to get untruths. False assumptions, falsely verified.

My point being - I'm convinced most people are genuinely concerned with seeking facts and the truth but the path to find it is much harder than it once was. Charlatans like Trump are the beneficiaries. His speech today was full of mistruths but his supporters are never going to believe those who point them out - relying instead on their own 'trusted sources'.

Nobody really thought he'd fix the price of eggs
It's seems a lot of people who voted for him, don't appear to think he would do the things he said he would do, in order to get him to vote for him.

Waiting for all the people on line saying, I voted for him because I just knew he was going to take Greenland from Denmark, invade Panama and Annex Canada.

I never thought he would lower prices, fix the economy or stop illegal migrants.

I think a lot of people voted for him because they believed he'd get rid of the immigrants and make it okay to punch down on gay and trans people again. Talking about cost of living gives you a smarter reason to hide behind your real motives.

Today, the threat doesn’t come from market fundamentalists, but rather proto-fascism. The direction of travel is towards the far right, and an increasingly radicalised far right at that. Buttressing their support, in particular, is backlash against various minorities, not least migrants.”

Helluva lot to agree with in that article.

In particular that we on the left need to take a leaf out of the book of the right - the right don’t give up. Everyone hates them but they just keep plugging away. That’s why they are in the ascendancy in so many respects right now. We need to be equally dogged.

And this:

“What the left needs to do now is stand its ground. It needs to pick battles. It needs to particularly focus on picking battles which go with the grain of public opinion on economic justice. That means picking fights with deeply unpopular elites.”

This:

“That doesn’t mean abandoning our defence of minorities - far from it. It’s simply to say that if those fights are our central focus, then we will lose and minorities will suffer as a consequence.”

I have been banging on about this for years. I am not anti-minorities. But it’s simply a fact of life that we live in a majoritarian system. We have to focus on the issues that most affect the majority.

Finally this:

“We focus our energy on the battle lines the right do not want, forcing them to fight on our terrain. If voters go to polling stations thinking about migrants, rather than tax dodging poverty paying bosses, we are likely to lose.”

Yes, yes, YES.
