Except that Republicans, conservative media like Fox, and newer "independent" media that skews conservative, will just blame anyone else for it.

Some, particularly swing voters, will figure it out, but many are squarely locked into the MAGA mindset that no matter what happens, Trump/Republicans good, and any problems are the opposition, Democratic states, the deep state, other countries, certain ethnic groups, all immigrants or illegal immigrants etc etc.

You can see they are still doing it. Ernst changing for Hegseth. No doubt there are extreme strong arm tactics going on including threats of violence. None directly traceable to Trump of course. This is one of Trump's legacies will be; the normalization of violence in DC politics.

This use of threats of violence - whether openly (albeit anonymously) on social media or privately, behind the scenes - is an aspect of modern socket that is particularly chilling.

The arguments around freedom of belief and expression have historically been around what you can say without fearing jail (though not, as some seem to think, without the right of reply from others). Now it’s about what you can say and not fear being threatened. Or even worse, as a couple of British (female) MPs have found out.

We really have to learn to tolerate differences of opinion, even major differences in values, and learn how to navigate a path through them if our liberal democracies are to survive.

There is a not insignificant chance that much of Trump's base and some Republican politicians would have let a Pence hanging slide, based on their acceptance of everything else Trump and his team did prior to Jan 6, and the violence/deaths that occurred as a result of his lies, whipping up anger and sending supporters to the capitol for no legitimate reason.

Yeah, his base wouldn't have cared but the establishment Republicans (the swamp) would have cared because it might be them next.
