people generally think Trump is a lunatic, i actually think more older people dislike him than younger do. At least that's what I see, which makes sense given the voting patterns in the US, where alot of young men voted for him.

Yes those big streamer channels appearances probably made the difference in the end.

I know plenty of younger people in my circle that are big Trump fans. I’m talking otherwise normal people.

Plenty of conservative older people I know think he’s an utter idiot.

Here's a question for people, how many people in your life that you converse with happens to like Trump?
No-one really. Suspect it'd be different if I was still in the conservative Christian circles I used to be in (the related friends I still talk to, either don't like him or aren't really into politics).

Have some family members that are quite conservative, have had plenty of disagreements with. They think he's a combination of lunatic and criminal.

The pro democrat US late night hosts are struggling, Colbert was reduced to making jokes about Mrs Trump's hat being too big.
The one she used to block Trump from kissing her?

That was a big hat.

I dont give a shit how old bernie is, as long as he has his mental facilties intact he should run for pres. He is older than Biden, but is as with it as he has ever been.
It's Bernie's time in 2028 Democrats, for ****s sake. For our sake.
I mean you burnt Bernie in 2016 for Hilary Clinton and in 2024 you burnt Bernie for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris

regardless of the semantics I don't think the EC is a good system. It's very different to how other countries conduct their government voting.
The giant flaws in US democracy become more apparent daily. The EC is just one of many downright dopey arrangements they persist with.

What makes my blood boil is the arrogance and presumption with which they proceeded to try to impose their “democracy” on other nations (but they were not “imperialist” the Americans, oh no, never), always justifying the outrage by saying it was the world’s best democracy.

Even I figured there must be something in it, for a while back then.

Not any more. Ranked globally, US democracy is very much an also-ran.

Even in this scenario, I have to slightly disagree with the comparison. Proper implementation of DEI in this situation would still be selecting the most suitable player/candidate, or the player with the most upside in a footy scenario.

Part of the misunderstanding is the belief that DEI candidates are selected over more qualified or suitable people just because they fit the criteria or help fill a quota.

A more apt comparison would be that the recruitment department previously ONLY looked at players coming through elite pathways or only private school teams. A DEI program would be put in place to expand the recruiting pool to different regions, looking for qualified players that would improve your team that otherwise would never be considered.
To carry on with your AFL scenario, in my opinion most of the opposition to DEI comes from disgruntled people who weren't even talented enough to even make the Draft Combines.

As for Donald Trump, his opposition to DEI is simply just a smokescreen to cover his breath taking nepotism.

What does that matter now though? Republicans won. They are in charge for the next 4 years.
People can save their outrage and have another crack in 4 years. I know who my money will be on.
What does it matter now? It matters so as to keep a brake on Trump’s triumphalism. Even as the president, there are limits on his powers, but there is no doubt he will abuse them at every opportunity, and if called on it, is sure to claim the whole nation is behind him. That is bullshit. Close to half the nation probably hates his guts in varying degrees.

No-one’s denying he won fair and square (though there’s certainly an argument about how “fair” and “square” is a win like this one really, when in part it was built on trashing democracy by relentlessly claiming - entirely without evidence - that the previous election was stolen from him, and gracelessly refusing to commit to accepting the result of this most recent election if he’d lost).

But just because he won doesn’t mean the 30 million Americans who voted against him are disqualified from a say in what he does to their country, and engaging in whatever legal forms of activism they want, in order to reign in his excesses.

Does not change the fact that the Republicans won the presidency, the house, the senate, the popular vote and all of the swing states. People can dress up the numbers to make it seem like there was nothing in it all they want. My first statement is pure fact.
That's so dishonest.
Trump has never admitted that he lost the 2020 election, He committed crimes to try to overturn the results of the election and has now pardoned the very people he encouraged to storm the Capital to overturn the election results.
He was even protected on his inauguration by the very same people who were injured on that day 4 years ago.
You just can't turn around and say that Donald Trump won the election because the results of the 2024 election now matter.
Donald Trump doesn't believe in fair elections. That is pure fact, as you say.

Now with Stargate, oil states like Saudi Arabia and UAE are moving away from fossil fuel income and setting up for AI tech, investing billions.
Another incoming environmental disaster.
Canada, Mexico, Europe and China are just lining up to put the boot into this ******ed US President.

I have found in mine the vast majority that openly profess any positivity or favourability toward him are those in my gym when casual chat inevitably turns to American politics. It's probably not a suprise with how bro-y these places can get, but it's always interesting and weird to come across Australians so passionate about him.
I’m in my 60’s, been a musician most of my life and been quite shocked to discover some of my contemporaries are Trump supporting.
Turns out they’re into the tinfoil hat Covid stuff and believe all the Gates, Soros, WHO, UN, Big Brother stuff.
When I bring up the trashing the environment, removing health care, letting big pharma charge what they want they don’t know what I’m talking about. They don’t read the fine print, just think Trump will save them from 5G microchips & jail Fauci.

Canada and Mexico will put immediate heat on the US economy if Trump goes tarrif.
Europe is a bit broad, too many countries.
China sitting back playing the long game.
Taiwan should be OK if they go Hong Kong style, accept the China deal because nobody is coming to help them.
