Treat him well North.

Without wanting to sound condescending, I think it's good that you got a bloke who has played in a winning team at AFL level over 100 times. Between him, Parker and Darling, you've added 442 total career wins. With Liam Shiels retiring, that's more total career wins than the 389 career wins that the other 22 players in your final match against Hawthorn have played in collectively.

I don't think for those three is necessarily value in itself, but at least you can say that these three players' presence from past successes will bring something different to the club, of which you really don't need more of the same.

Though obviously the cost is your pick 25 and a relatively large salary for two years (about 1.5 million).

Rawlings said you wanted him to help with rebound out of half-back but he really hasn't played there for us for a couple of years (except for the games that he's been subbed on this year) especially as we don't really flood back, so we can't prevent him from being isolated in defence if other teams want to structure up their forward line that way. He's been a forward and mid utility for us, playing everywhere from centre bounce, wing, the variants of half-forward that run hard to the stoppage, to the wing or hold their position forward etc.

In that context you'll get value of a player who has utility in being able to be shifted around in any position, more or less have identical output, and allow others on the field to be played in their optimum posiitions.

This idea that he's an elite kick isn't his strength, in my eyes. He is creative and has vision, but often his decision making is a little bit off, and his All-Australian year for us was basically the one and only year where his decision making caught up to his vision and creativity, and it all came together. In recent years though the odd kick, while having the potential to break the game open wasn't always there, and has cost us with some "dumb" turnovers in the back half in a way that just isn't there for the other players we played off half-back this year such as Bramble and Freijah.

On the other hand, his running capacity and ability to read the play and use clean hands below his knees have always been great. The amount of times over the last few years he's just known when to run to a contest or run off a contest (and make the right decision), position himself to crumb, and then be able to pick up the ball at an awkward angle or at pace off that contest has been nothing short of elite. He uses his running power to beat oppositions to the ball, and your defensive structure will be better for the fact that other teams will look to switch against you to isolate your (admittedly poor) key defenders, but you'll be saved somewhat by Daniel beating his direct opponent forward across the flanks or pockets and beating the forward to the contest, and winning the subsequent groundball freely and cleanly without an opponent, rather it being a 50/50 groundball contest in the first place between forward and defender.

He's one of the few premiership heroes we have left, so treat him well!

Thanks for this, a really useful summary!

Angst in the trade thread about Daniel is misplaced imo. Fantastic kick of the footy, clean, disciplined, been wasted at the Dogs.

Stoked to have him, very much in the camp of we need good players now rather than more draft picks. We’ve been down so long, at some point you have to back in your development and what you’ve got and actively improve your side now. Anyone fancy another 3 win season? Confident he’ll improve us quite a bit next year.

He came 4th in the best and fairest last year but for some reason Beveridge had it out for him this year even before the season started, it was the first time in his career that he looked low on confidence. But he still managed to finish the season strongly and was of the few players who stood up in the final.

This is really what the Fisher trade should've been, come to think of it. We had no need for someone of Fisher's ilk, and it was proven by the fact that we played both him and McKercher out of position in an effort to keep up with the rest of the league in rebounding half-back stocks. Daniel's a natural when he has the ball back there. Unlike both of the others. He won't be any good in any other situation, but if he can get us out of jams whilst simultaneously allowing others to roam upfield, he's almost, almost worth pick 25. Pick 30 is where I'd put someone like that around, at that age.

Hope he does a damn good job for us

Trade Radio reporting that Caleb Daniel has been "Executed." Very bad news, my heart goes out to his family.
Does this open up a spot for a SSP signing then?

Tristan Xerri, Noel Teasdale, Darren Crocker...any other NMFC players who wore a head protection??

Wayne Carey at birthday parties?

And I want mini X to wear a full Phil Narkle style helmet in North colours.

Not that enthused by the prospect of this bloke. Hope to the contrary, but seems a panic buy.
