Heeney 2.jpg

Isaac Heeney

Isaac Heeney is a crowd favourite and one of the best young players in the competition. The QBE Sydney Swans Academy graduate won the 2018 AFL Mark of the Year award, was selected in the AFL Players’ Association’s 22Under22 team in two of his eligible four years and played his 100th senior game in 2019. Heeney can be used in the midfield, forward line – where he booted four goals in star teammate Lance Franklin’s absence in Round 20 last year – or as a loose man in defence.

Isaac Heeney
DOB: 05 May 1996
DEBUT: 2015
DRAFT: #18, 2014 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Cardiff (NSW)

if nothing else, at least for these first two weeks of the 2024 season heeney has realised his potential as the best player in the competition
if this is a platform for the rest of his career ... oh my!

He has games like this regularly to start seasons - was it 2022 where he had huge goal hauls a few weeks in a row? It shows how much a season wears his body down.

He has looked so good. I saw an ex Swan just before the season started and I asked him what he thought of the swans prospects this year. He said he thought they would make finals but not much more.. the comment after was that heeney is probably a good player and never quite hit expectations. ..I agreed.
Well if he keeps this up he will prove him, l and many others wrong.
Awesome to watch

2 things

This is the best he has ever looked, Longmire finally actually using him well, took him a decade

but anyway

1- we have seen Heeney star before and then fade off and be up and down, need to see it week in week out, or most weeks at least.

2- he is a great drop punt set shot on song, stop the checkside shit

fck, yes!
i reckon half his problem with his goalkicking would be some form of second guessing ... "should i kick this way? or that way? or ... " while he's in the process of doing it
he is such a good drop punt!

at least he's getting into the positions to be having plenty of shots at goal

He's impacting the scoreboard while playing in the middle. Utilising his skills & physical abilities superbly. It probably helps that he knows he's got a month of midfield play rather than a week to week proposition. He's been able to build into the role without the pressure of returning to the fwd line.

In the forward line he's great but in the mids he can be elite & much more damaging both in attack & defence. He's made the AA squad once & hasn't kicked 50 goals in a season.

Imo he's even more dangerous attacking player now as he drifts forward, so it's difficult getting a match up or gameplan on him as he's not parked in the fwd 50 solely.

It's a bit strange that so many are acting like this is the first time Heeney has been played mostly in the midfield. There's been many, many games where he's played predominantly midfield. It usually just resulted in everyone being as confused as ever as to where his best position is.

I think it is because he is the main guy at the moment. All of his best games have been when he has been the main forward target or the main mid

When Adams, Parker and Mills come back he will fall back to obscurity unless he becomes the main forward target

Yeah I worry about that. Not sure how we can justify taking midfield minutes from Heeney for either Parker or Adams in his current form though. I'd rather shoehorn the others into whatever positions we can

What I think will be good about them coming back is that if Heeney needs a rest, we can afford to. If he isn't impacting we can rotate him forward or something if Parker is going beast mode for example

Bit of a stretch on some facts here.

Heeney was AA in 2022 and, whilst he didn't kick 50 goals, he did kick 49 (and 28 points). That's an outstanding season on any measure of a hybrid forward.

Oh how sort some peoples' memories are...

How is that stretch stating that he made it once? How many times has he made it? Yes he kicked 49 goals & next best season has been 36 goals...

He's utilising all of his talents & skills in the midfield role now.

One great season as a hybrid forward in his career with his talents & skills is underachieving.

Stretching facts is claiming one great season masking as an elite career.

100% fully fit and flying Isaac Heeney is the best player to watch we ever had, better than Buddy, Goodes etc Imo

noooo not close to Buddy!

Franklin did it week in week out for a decade.

I said best to watch when on, not who did it consistently etc

And just my view of course

Not Goodes. Anything Heeney can do Goodes could do but there were things Goodes could do that Heeney can't.

I prefer watching Heeney to Buddy but I just find goals not that exciting to watch so no key forward will ever be that watchable to me.

I think Heeneys marking is bit more exciting

But yeah just what I enjoy watching, Goodes better player for sure.

Re goals, yeah I agree, and if i just want to watch key forwards ,for me it was more Plugger than Buddy

Buddy over Plugger for me. Plugger kicked more, but Buddy made something out of nothing a lot more
